It is a good reminder to remember that sometimes the most horrible events can bring out some of the best in people. This man did an awesome thing yesterday and he should have this whole nations respect and thanks.

I suppose they needed to tie this tragedy in with the latino narrative somehow. We need more INDIVIDUALS like this man, thank you sir.

Agreed.

If an article profiling a White man was titled "Caucasian Hero", I have no doubt La Raza would cry over it.

Bea, Don't make me remind you that being from a Spanish-speaking Hispanic cultural background is not a racial designation. If that were true then all USAmericans would be Native and speaking Apache...and we all know that is not true.

What "Latino narrative"?
03:42 PM on 04/16/2013
That the mythical latino are a group of people who fit tightly into a prescribed designation; That there is no such thing as an individual with their own individual rationale. The fact that this gentleman has a Spanish surname is irrelevant to his heroics.

The same narrative that separates Medal of Honor recipients by skin color to make a point.

I only hope it will not be in the shape of a Chihuahua, but even that wouldn't shock me...

Mr.Arredondo, I sit here in awe of you. Your life was spared for the work and you still had to do. Thank goodness you were around to help those people yesterday. Your sons would be so very proud of you as many of us are. Continue to go forth spreading your peace and heart.
Much love to you and peace on the rest of your journey through this life.

This is a great man, and a beautiful act he displayed. It is a shame this newspaper had to make it a racial issue.

I didn't get that part. Since this race had so many international runners, I have read where one was refereed as a visitor from Germany, one from France, etc, why is saying he is from Costa Rico, considered a racial issue? He is a hero, if you see pictures of a man vaulting over the fence and scaffolding that is Arredondo, he wasn't waiting for them to be torn away to help.
03:27 PM on 04/16/2013
I think because he wasn't a "visitor" from Costa Rica. He is American. Hell, one of his sons gave his life for this country in the war. Sounds like they've been here for some time.

Given all of that, I'm on the fence with whether it was "racial" or not. No need to really lead the story with it but I don't think there's harm in mentioning his background.

...it is a "racial" issue because in the HP, if you have a Spanish name you are illegal, brown and in desperate need of being patronized...

Anyone who has seen the full picture will come away humbled by the care, compassion, and compose of those helping the young man. His legs are literally shredded below the knees.

I agree, what a selfless thing for him to do! Very commendable. Let's not forget there were many others doing the same thing, putting others before themselves. They are all heroes.

To see the man constantly shaking almost brings a tear to my eye. I like to think I would be one of the ones helping the injured, but I watched a video of the first ied go off and that scared me behind the computer screen. But I know in my heart I would have done anything I could to help. This man is a hero.
