With an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the US, this "cost" of $6.3 trillion comes to a cost per immigrant of $572,000! I know the government can sometimes wate money, but this supposed study is insane. It seems to be more of a scare tactic than something which should be taken even remotely serious.

ok, well you may be in trouble for spilling the beans. this $, if you need to know, would be used to provide over $300 of goods and services to each immigrant, the difference being the good old redneck buddy profit built in - just like haliburton pricing.

Is this report on the cost of immigration the Heritage Foundation's "Rogoff-Reinhart" moment?

Immigration reform is both economically beneficial and compassionate. That's why everybody from John McCain to Marco Rubio to Barack Obama support it.
10:45 PM on 05/06/2013
well, heritage has a different view. are they heading towards self deportation as mitt suggested, or something more as he was not a true conservative.

Heritage has been wrong about immigration for years producing comically fallacious reports. I don't take them seriously on this issue.

Only in the right wing imagination are people who work 12-16 hour days picking oranges and cleaning pools "lazy" and "moochers." Ugh.

The only amnesty program we need is deportation of illegal immigrants.

Here's the only immigration reform we need:

FULLY enforce existing law, yeah, that means the Obama Administration would *have* to do so -- this country is absolutely doomed as a political entity with the Obama Administration in power *and* Dems plus Reps being the majority party in the House and Senate.

Does it matter that Obama's Administration has deported record amount of illegal immigrants?
10:50 PM on 05/06/2013
not sure that is a final enough solution. can't you come up with something more effective?

maybe we could tell them they will be getting showers and ... well, you know the rest from your 1930's handbook.

Secure the borders and deportation will work. The rest of your comment is childish and immature.  You should try to kee it on an adult level.

The real difference between hardcore conservatives and Democrats is that Democrats want to spend money on social programs for human beings. The Republicans want to spend money and lots of it on war.
When Stewart bought Alaska they called it his folly. What do you call the 3Trillion dollars we have spent on Afghanistan and Iraq? Keep on trucking DeMint. What a waste.

If we grant another amnesty, we really are sort of sending a message out to the world that we're going to have recurrent, repeated amnesties, which I think would be a sort of magnet,
In the 1980's Mexican women were averaging about seven children each over their lifetime.  Currently the birthrate is less than two.  That's the main reason why this bill will not result in any new wave of illegal immigrants, because the population pressure is not there any more.
And the most ridiculous assumption of the Heritage Foundation is that giving them legal status will not open a chance to improve their conditions.  Do you think that they LIKE to work for substandard wages?

No honesty to be had on either side of that debate.

This is a bunch of white politicians trying to dance around an issue in a way that both satisfies their base voter and also plays to the rising power of the minority vote. They're trying to sell hispanic voters on the same small-government system they fled from when they came to America. Good luck and all, but you've got a fair distance to go before you can pull that off.

Seriously, over fifty years at the average rate of inflation, $6.3 trillion becomes about $1 trillion in real dollars. We've got that much.

Having more workers will eventually grow GDP and increase revenues. That's just a fact.

The 1986 amnesty didn't tank GDP or tax revenues, and this won't either.

Having more workers? How do you figure. We have 7.6% unemploymeny now. Where are the "more workers" going to find jobs?

We've been taking on more workers all along. It never really stopped. GDP has been growing since 2010, and it's far ahead of where it was in the recession of 2009. Best evidence is, 93% of the immigrants have found jobs, or maybe even 100% of the ones who stayed. I know it seems strange, but perhaps many of them are working because they're working in sectors that address increased consumer demand from the increased number of consumers. You want laws and walls instead? Then I'd say you're applying legal and engineering solutions in an attempt to solve a problem that's rooted in economic imbalances.  How's that working out so far?

The Heritage Foundation is a well oiled, well funded, and well padded with religious cranks of every stripe. If anyone doubts this, read the history of this pecular organization, its founders and standard policies. I read parts of the Heritage presentation on immigration and could not believe that god had actually come to earth and smote the unsavory crew into some actual Christianity. If this is not an example of Christian love, don't know what is.
