The more I talk to people, the more I love my dogs

There are no "bad dogs", just bad owners. If a person wants a dog, no matter what the breed, be prepared to be the "alpha" dog. If that status is attained, your dog will be the best behaved. Lose that status, your dog needs intervention.

Pits have a bad rap, ALL instances of attacks are usually the fault of the owners for lack of leadership.

I'm a used Rottie owner and everybody was her friend until proven otherwise and heaven help you if she saw a baby. Never saw a dog so devoted to kids, Halloween was a blast just watching her waiting for the next group of kids to hit the door.

Good idea, I loved my pit bull!

My 70 lb. rescue pit Hazel is the friendliest girl on the planet. She loves people and any other animal. She is smart and was very easy to train. They are great dogs and unfortunately many have been really screwed up by bad owners.

My apartment complex accepts any size or breed of dog with 5 exceptions, pit bull being one of them. My renter's insurance excludes 6 breeds of "vicious dogs", pit bull being one of them. Coincidence? Try walking up to that both with a tiny, yapping dog in your arms and see what kind of reception you get.

a big kiss. pits get a bad rep, because a bad owner can make for a bad pit bull. they are extremely smart and loyal. many places that have pit bull bans are educating themselves. hopefully you can educate yourself too.
07:17 PM on 05/06/2013
Pit bulls require extensive social training with other dogs and with people from the time they're puppies. Given that there are numerous other dog breeds that don't require such training and that would inflict much less physical harm if they misbehave, why roll the dice with a fully grown pit bull? I had a neighbor in California that did pit bull rescue from shelters around the area. She has a pit bull of her own as a pet. She returns, in her own words, 90% of them to be euthanized. All the education I need.

We have a two year old Beautiful Pit Bull named Chelsea, champagne coat and piercing green eyes.
She is the sweetest dog I have ever owned, and I have had many. She loves all people and other animals, I have never seen her exhibit any negative behavior.
This breed does not deserve its reputation because of bad owners.
Do you know why Michael Vicks tortured and killed so many Pit Bulls? Because the poor creatures wouldn't fight!

We rescued 2 feral kittens - and took them in. One is still feral - and does not like my pit is so gentle with her. She will sit close to her and whine, like, "Will you be my friend." I'm hoping the cat realizes the dog will not hurt her.

"This breed does not deserve its reputation"

Dog breeding is the practice of mating selected dogs with the intent to maintain or produce specific qualities and characteristics.

The American Pit Bull qualities and characteristics: to produce a dog that combined the gameness (a quality of fighting dogs or working terriers; eagerness despite the threat of substantive injury).
Pit bulls have constituted approximately 2% of the dogs in the U.S., and a 9-year (1979–88) review of fatal dog attacks in the U.S. determined that pit bulls were implicated in 42% of the attacks in which breed was recorded.

I still don't believe its inherent in their nature regardless. To many unscrupulous owners have raised them to be mean and many are abused.
Because I'm now an owner I have met many many Pit Bulls with kind, good owners and none behave as you are trying to imply, in fact at the dog park its mostly been German Sheperds that have started fights, although I have owned that breed as well and mine were well behaved.

When I was working security in the military I was often on patrol in an 800 unit base housing area. Almost every time I was called to the aftermath of a dog bite incident the owners of the dog would say - "I don't know why my dog did that, he/she has never bitten anybody before."

I would say - "Say goodbye to your dog."

Nobody knows for sure what a dog is going to do, even if it is has been "cool" all it's life, it can revert to what it is genetically pre-disposed to do in an instant.

Putting your face into the face of an animal that has been bred for centuries to bite (and bite hard) is a bad idea. Maybe it will not go wrong for you, but it goes wrong for somebody somewhere in this world every day.
