Reading some of the comments here is even more depressing than what the government did. The ignorance of some people is just staggering. It's pretty clear now how governments are able to take away your rights with little or no objection. When all of our rights are gone I bet these same people will be screaming - how did that happen? But of course by then it will be too late.

I seem to remember an awful lot of Democrats voting for the Patriot Act too. Now is not the time to throw your hands up in the air and give up. The Patriot Act while a very bad piece of legislation didn't take all of our rights but if we don't get our act together it will happen.

Of course the GOP cannot be mad bout the DOJ and AP. They were the ones that demanded that Holder get to the bottom of who was leaking information to the press. THEY WERE BLAMING THE WHITE HOUSE AND NOW HAVE NOTHING TO SAY.

I would wager that they are the ones who sent letters to the DOJ to investigate these very issues

"But their response to the Justice Department secretly obtaining phone records of 20 Associated Press reporters? Meh."

That's because most Republicans, despite all their non-stop blather about "freedom", are really authoritarians who distrust individual autonomy and self-direction.

"You're free to speak your mind my friend/As long as you agree with me..."

True freedom is the ability to do and say things of which others don't approve. These authoritarian Republicans believe in the "freedom" to do what they want to do, but they are intent on denying basic freedoms to those who don't match their ideal of "real" Americans or Christians or free-marketeers or whatnot. So they're eager to have the right to possess assault weapons, but have fits when others want the freedom to marry, or to use whatever medicines work best for them, or to have the right to reproductive self-determination, or any number of other freedoms that don't fit the authoritarians' strict pseudo-morality.

They're happy with the police state--so long as it's aimed at people who (they think) are not like them.

Well obviously they aren't against obtaining phone records, as Bush and Cheney were doing phone taps on pretty much everyone. They are probably afraid they might actually get questioned about that if they go after this DOJ action.

Great video explaining this. Perhaps the muted Republican response has to do with the fact that they have engaged in this behavior, called for the DOJ to this, filibuster a bill that could have prevented the DOJ from moving in this manner.

The Attorney for the AP was interviewed in this piece, and at this point, they want to have some of these regulations to be reviewed that would allow this occur. Fair request.

Progressive liberals have always been more comfortable leaking national secrets than conservatives. Progressives cheer damaging material that were leaked in Wiki Leaks and even cheer the traitor who did so. Conservatives see the value in keeping govt. secrets. Progressives think leaking national security secrets will keep the Govt. in line..or in some cases progressives do really want to hurt our military...there are some who think the US is a bad govt. and bad country. So that is why you see the difference.

Aside from call BS on your statement about progressives wanting to hurt the military, remember that it seems to be neo-conservatives who tend to like to start wars and put our military in harms way for reasons that have nothing to do with national security or our freedoms being at stake.

Progressives/Liberals do, however, tend to like to see corruption and abuse of power exposed, while neo-conservatives tend to want legislation to prosecute whistle blowers.

Also, please note I use the term 'neo-conservatives', because real conservatives usually aren't that unreasonable and have been pushed out of the republican party. Real conservatives understand the need for honesty and social responsibility, two concepts that the GOP has lost since forcing out the conservatives.

Still, regardless of political affliliation, human being are individuals who each have their own perspective and really should be lumped in to groups.

Apparently the old white men of the gopee only care about the 2nd Amendment and not the First.
10:48 AM on 05/15/2013
You are delusional. The real story here is the fact that these intelligence leaks came from the White House or from someone very high in the Administration. Even Holder had to recuse himself because he is being investigated by the FBI.

Whatever. Your comment has nothing to do with the gopee not thinking vacuuming up phone records is wrong, just more anti-Obama hysteria.

Well, he certainly did get paid. Like Eric Cantor, his net worth has grown exponentially during a down economy. I don't think it is because either of them are better investors than the rest of the populous.

Really? Obama's bath water drinkers = progressive liberal Media

Bastardizes the Republicans for:

> Gun background checks
> Fast & Furious
> Benghazi
> Amnesty for illegals
> voter I.D.
> Sequester
> food stamps
> 12 million American workers out of work
> $16.8 trillion National Debt
> senate filibuster

Takes, real brass, to now want Republicans to come to the Media's aid to protect their 1st Amendment Rights & their Jobs . .. ... ....

Time to kiss some Republican Butts

"Takes, real brass, to now want Republicans to come to the Media's aid to protect their 1st Amendment Rights & their Jobs"

Speaking of taking some "real brass" especially after what transpired from 2002 to to 2009 in the interest of fighting te.rr.orism.

Try real hard YOU might be able to remember the "Protect America Act" and how the Admin then circled the wagons to hide behind it, eh?

I'm outraged that republicans aren't outraged about the AP wire taps. It's outragious that they would pass up another opportunity to be outraged. Being that the only emotion the republicans have left is outrage, why can't they direct their outrage to this issue. After all, what are we paying them for. They better shape up and be outraged, as this is all they have.
