At some point I'm certain that more people will understand and honor the impact that our food has on our health and our ability to live our lives. I wish I would have watched the debate because some of the comments for denying this provision are totally counter to keeping people safe. It's just amazing! At any rate, looks like we're moving forward and I'm looking forward to those Organic Food Ads. Whoo Hoo!

" swift backlash from some farm-state Republicans, with one member saying he didn't want to see the industry get a free ride and another complaining about organics' "continued assault on agriculture."

These ag guys have gotten away with so much c$%p and bullying of us for so long, they cannot believe we are no longer beholding to them, and will no longer tolerate the arrogance, abuse, avarice and greed.

They want the taxpayer tit all to themselves.

We the people deserve food that is not poisoned in an effort to make more profit. Who cares if the non-organic farmers get mad.

GMO food is linked to cancer and environmental destruction that Monsanto covers up. Stop the madness.

Just curious, why isn't there a cancer epidemic in non-lab animals that eat GMO feed all their lives?
12:11 AM on 05/18/2013
Are you sure there isn't?

Just looking at the cancer rates in our pets, I would say there is an epidemic.

"that industry's lack of respect for traditional agriculture"

--Interesting that "traditional agriculture" now includes GMOS, synthetic pesticides, and so on, but organic farming is the radical departure from tradition.

In the republican lexicon, where up is down and conservatives are against conservation, it makes perfect sense. Chemically assisted agriculture is the traditional way. Organic agriculture is a radical new technology.

I can hear them now "Damn Hippie green Farmers!!!" LoL They should be forced to only buy and eat GMO foods since they seem to think they are so safe ???!!! They buy organic though while biting the Monsanto hand that feeds them!!!! We are supposed to eat low value food full of toxins, synthetics, GMO's , meat full of antibiotics and hormones fed by GMO corn.... Ridiculous it is unkowingly to the slaughter due to their not having to label them nor for Monsanto to be held liable for any injury from their experiments in big AG!

" 'That's one of the things that has caught me and raises my concerns, is that industry's lack of respect for traditional agriculture,' said Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., referring to some organic companies' efforts to reduce the number of genetically modified crops in the marketplace. At the same time, Scott acknowledged that he and his wife buy organic foods."

Diss the industry that want's to promote itself while you buy the products it produces. So typical.

Whichever politician lives in an ag state will vote down GMO labeling or marketing unless his/her constituents are organic farmers.

As Monsanto itself has pointed out, labels on genetically engineered foods are like putting a “skull and crossbones” on food packages. This is why Monsanto and their allies poured $46 million into defeating a California ballot initiative last year that would have required labels on GMO foods. This is why Monsanto has lobbied strenuously in 30 states this year to prevent, or at least delay, state mandatory labeling laws from being passed. This is why Monsanto has threatened to file federal lawsuits against Vermont, Connecticut, Maine and Washington if they dare grant citizens the right to know whether or not their food has been genetically engineered or not.

And this is why Monsanto’s minions are trying to insert amendments or riders into the Farm Bill that will make it nearly impossible, even illegal, for states to pass GMO labeling laws. And there’s nothing to stop them when Congress is filled with pro-biotech cheerleaders who could care less that 90 percent of U.S. consumers want mandatory labels and proper safety testing of genetically engineered crops and foods.

How Monsanto Is Using Cronies in Congress to Take Away States' Rights to Label Genetically Modified Foods

State Labeling Laws: The ‘skull and crossbones’ that terrify Monsanto

Monsanto’s greatest fear isn’t a federal government charged with protecting the health and safety of its citizens. Congress and the White House seem only too happy to oblige the biotech industry’s unquenchable thirst for growth, power and dominance. No, it’s the massive, unstoppable (so far) grassroots movement of Millions Against Monsanto that strikes fear in the heart of the Biotech Bully. U.S. citizens are waking up. They’re demanding labels on genetically engineered foods, similar to those already required in the European Union. They’re calling for serious independent safety-testing of GE crops and animals, both those already approved (especially Monsanto’s Roundup-resistant crops) and those awaiting approval....

You’re eating genetically modified foods daily unless you grow all of your food or always buy organic.
GM foods are not labeled in the United States...? The biotech industry has convinced the Food and Drug Administration that GM crops are “not substantially different” from conventional varieties. The FDA, does no independent testing for safety and relies on the research conducted by the manufacturers of the products.

GM food is not substantially different in the same way as CO is not substantially different from CO2. They're both invisible and odorless. What could possibly be the problem?
01:35 PM on 05/17/2013
I for one grow my own organic food with Heirloom seed. As for GMO's the natural selection and reproduction of seed culled for centuries is completely obliterated by seed with a built in immunity to Roundup and other lethal Herbicides.

Monsanto seed crops are made to be over sprayed with their herbicides or (even to produce the herbicide within the plant itself). Not only are you consuming a genetic mutant but millions upon millions of pounds of these super herbicides that have been sprayed on them...its your choice to make but at least educate yourself about the consequences of the genetic mutation of food sources.
12:15 AM on 05/18/2013
Because, as with so many other things, what you can't see actually can harm you. It's like saying " that guy carrying a concealed gun looks just like the guy next to him-what could possibly be the problem?"

Genetically Modified Democracy: Monsanto and Congress Move to Stomp on States' Rights

Reliable sources in Washington D.C. have informed the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) that Monsanto has begun secretly lobbying its Congressional allies to attach one or more “Monsanto Riders” or amendments to the 2013 Farm Bill that would preempt or prohibit states from requiring labels on genetically engineered (GE) foods.

In response to this blatant violation of states’ rights to legislate, and consumers’ right to know, the OCA and a nationwide alliance have launched a petition to put every member of Congress on notice: If you support any Farm Bill amendment that would nullify states’ rights to label genetically modified organisms (GMOs), we’ll vote – or throw – you out of office.

Ironically, one of the things organic farming will do is move more people back to the land, as organic farms tend to be smaller than corporate farms. So, people like the rep from Missouri would see increased business from more organic farmers, rather than a few mega corporate farmers.
