I vaguely remember that there was somebody dreadfully important at the first one receiving an honorary degree in something or other and making a speech that went something like blah, blah, blah, warm fuzzy stuff, blah, blah, blah.

At least Whedon was original and made a useful point.

Not me.

But I might remember this line from Whedon's address forever - "Peace comes from the acceptance of the part of you that will never be at peace." I wouldn't have understood that thirty years ago, let alone remembered it.

So maybe commencement addresses are more useful to people like me, than to the graduates.
