Are these "double dippers" the same people who vote to cut food programs for the poor? Seems like double hypocrisy.

Democrat FDR introduced farm subsidies, (welfare for famers) to keep them afloat during the Great Depression and after. Both Democrat and Republican administrations have kept them since. The Republican party of self determination and less government will not abolish what is now corporate wefare to farmers. Most of the recipients are Red States. Corporate welfare is fine in Republican eyes but welfare for the poor, the unemployed or the sick is just plain "mooching". And a lot of their supporters in the Red Sates do not have a pot to p...s in and depend on the government to survive!

We're tired of the private citizens being able to find out who's getting the FREE money from the taxes people are paying. That was an oversight in the original law so we're changing it and paying ourselves even more! Now we will get as much as we can, but you won't know who we are, so you won't be able to get mad at any of us and we will be able to say "NOT ME" when someone complains about what someone is stealing from the taxpayers!

We are all going to have to be very vigilant about issues like this, in particular. The GOTP thieves are going to try all kinds of "backdoor" tactics, on the run up to losing every election they will be in. We all know how fond these old, white rich dudes like those dirty, backdoor, kind of maneuvers!

In order to get farm subsidies, you should have actually live and work on the land.

Most people don't realize how many farming families get paid by the acre "not to farm". This is a simple supply and demand thing. How else will major ag companies triple the price of corn. Personally it sickens me. First of all these farmers are now taking jobs because they no longer make money on their land. Others plant only to harvest seed. We have tens of millions of starving people around the world that with the subsidy money the government could by the food and ship it. Imagine being able to cut food stamps by a third because the price of food is half the cost, instead of just as one Congressman who received 3.1 million in subsidies said, cut food stamps by 21 million dollars but jump farming subsidies up another 9 million next year. I remember how crazy the Republicans got when Carter wanted to save farms. By saving farms, Carter made "takers" off a bunch of idle farms. Not takers in the facts their not working, just their yearly farm payment never planting a seed! Republicans love subsidies. Put a stop to subsidies and kill the Republican party!

I got news! Part of the reason they want farmers to have more crop insurance instead of money in their pockets is so Monsanto will get their payments for seed directly from the insurance company! And Monsanto farms would get the same subsidies without the public being aware of the huge payoffs they would get for the current drought. Their products are supposed to be drought resistant, but their crops are failing just as readily as everybody else's!

I agree that he should not have given Monsanto the advantages he did, but look to Republicans for this particular situation. They wrote the farm bill, not President Obama. They do not allow his input. If he favors something, they oppose it. If he favored a shady bill that lines their pockets, you can be assured they would disagree, and call him out for it as if it favored only Democrats. But they have no compunction about lining their own pockets and hiding it behind farm subsidies through crop insurance rules. Monsanto's profit is part of the deal, though, and farmers will lose vital funds because of it.

Why subsidies at all? What other businesses get the government to pay some or all of their casualty insurance costs, except allowing tax deductions for same? If there are to be subsidies, they should be limited to small farms--real small farms--and be need-based; not to big corporate farms or to farmers with higher incomes.

We can do away with all of this just as soon as a farmer can sell their product at the real cost of production plus a reasonable profit. The downside to this is that food cost will increase greatly.

With five (5) different scandals currently involving the Executive Branch of the Government ~ one has to question the transparency with the Executive Branch's willingness to be forthcoming with the truth ~ rather than House & Senate Committees having to pull teeth in obtaining information.

“and potentially reduce transparency in the government's support system for farmers, sparing lawmakers headlines about government help they receive.”

Very choosy about who should be transparent, I see.

But darn it drug test those other welfare recipients.

You can never get transparency from a government that uses NSA surveillance on its citizens or maybe political enemies...seems right for abuse if you ask me...
