“We should be thankful for individuals like Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald who see injustice being carried out by their own government and speak out, despite the risk. They have done a great service to the American people by exposing the truth about what our government is doing in secret."~Ron Paul

I am not surprised. Ron doesn't seem to love American as much as himself.

Russia just offered you asylum Snowden! There's a freedom loving country to live in for a Ron Paul libertarian. Way to go, guy!

Yes, if Snowden finds refuge in Russia he'll discover what a free and open society is really like.

New story idea for huffpost. "Most mass murderers of children are Obama Supporters". Nah, doesn't have the same ring as an ex-presidential candidate that is out of office and has little influence on your life. Back to your regularly scheduled PROGRAMMING.

I wonder how much $$$$$ we are paying for that HUGE megadata storage center the government is building in Utah? Just wondering how much comes out of my PAYCHECK for the government to spy on me? I know I have nothing to hide, but I'd rather they spend my money on things like PEOPLE STARVING in this country!! Although, I don't feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that my PERSONAL information is being looked at by some government punk kid whos last name may be Orwell!!

Ron Paul, Edward Snowden, and Glen Greenwald. Hmmm... Of course, now we'll have to add Vladimir Putin to this exclusive group. Nice foursome.
11:15 AM on 06/11/2013
You forgot to add Kucinich, and the rest on the left who find this disturbing as well.

Just by chance, are you really Rumsfeld, and if so, what are you doing posting here on the Huff Po?

Interesting that we now think national security is up to "democracy" and citizens "right" to know. Great thinking. Oh I'm sure the entitled generation this guy is part of won't agree, but I expect little from people who think we live in a police state because they can't download music for free.
Also interesting that the same generation clamors to give information voluntarily to corporate America so they can be "liked" on Facebook. Not to mention being totally addicted to their phones and the internet. But somehow it's worse if the "government" has it. More great thinking.
But hey, Rand Paul can save you, well, unless you are one of the unfortunate ones, but that will NEVER happen to you! You can always call your parents to bail you out!

I agree with some of what your saying. I don't think the younger generation thinks we live in a police state. They are comfortable with sharing info, as you mentioned some, things like facebook, twitter, GPS, cell phones etc etc, are changing the views on privacy. It's the older generation that is still real pinched about it. I figure 99.9% of those who've griped about privacy their whole lives will go to the grave with no one taking much interest in where they've been and what they've done. I've always seen it as a form of self centeredness. As a side note, you can still dowload music for free by using torrents.
12:06 PM on 06/11/2013
We live in a police state because the US has 25% of the world's prison population. Mostly for non-violent crimes like smoking a joint.

big whoop. He's a person with convictions, who saw the inner workings of the organization and called it like he experienced it. Not a traitor, just a whistleblower. I guess we'll find out all about his every breathing moment in the next couple of months. Verizon is the official government carrier, government employees with blackberries paid for with tax dollars. Don't you want to be sure these people are not abusing their privileges using our resources?

The thing you can give Ron Paul credit for is he was honest....

His ideas were never going to get him elected President and he knew it. He didn't change his views to match those of a candidate, he put himself out there.

This is where libertarians and liberals should agree... This information needed to come and for me to see John Boehner calling this guy a "traitor" is troubling to say the least.

Where do you turn when both parties seem to be lining up against the people.

President Obama has promised to prosecute, John Boehner has called him a traitor.

What would you do and how would you feel in this situation?

Your government abandoning you for exposing the people to the truth....

As far as both parties leadership are concerned we should all still be in the dark about this.
11:50 AM on 06/11/2013
I wouldn't say Paul is honest as much as playing to a libertarian base.

You seem knowledgeable, so I don't think I'm going say anything you don't know. There's 2 main reasons I believe that leaking this was wrong. 1 is the simple fact that those that have taken a position of high security should respect that, period. We can debate the right or wrong of it, but I'm sure he was under some serious contracts/oaths etc that he agreed too. 2 is, the only way for this operation to work, was for no one to know it was taking place. I guarantee alot of phones being used by terror groups have been now shut down. But all of us regular folk, even the ones that are griping about privacy, are still using there verizon accounts.
12:10 PM on 06/11/2013
There is no such thing as absolute security in society. If ur ok with a video camera in every room of ur house/office etc, then what ur saying is consistent with ur beliefs. Otherwise ur just shifting goalposts to justify the status quo.

Rand Paul and Snowden are both opportunists! Snowden wants his 15 minutes, and Rand Paul wants to exploit anything that he thinks will help his campaign in 2016. If a person has nothing to hide, why worry about it??? Congress has been aware of the phone record search procedure since it started. Why make a big deal out of it now?? Politics pure and simple!!!
11:16 AM on 06/11/2013
if you have nothing to hide, please stand up. I have never met this person. the willingness to concentrate power in the hands of a few seems to be growing in this nation. It will kill it as it has done all others.

Please explain the danger connected with Ron and Rand Paul. I haven't seen danger in the words that they speak. Opinions have little danger in them, if they did we could be already living in a dictatorship. Do you recall Mr. Obama's statements on his view of the Constitution as he campaigned in 2007?

What a shock. Snowden is a Republican.

Edward Snowden cares or supports nothing about this country. He is a trader who has turned over classified information and then ran like the chicken poop he is.

Edward Snowden is, more likely, a spy for the Chinese government. He committed treason then escaped to China- a country known for spying on its own citizens while suppressing their freedoms. His "patriotism" is merely the cover story in case of his capture and return to the US and tried for treason.
10:53 AM on 06/11/2013
Why would a Republican "Libertarian" Ron Paul campaign contributor hide in the country that spies on its citizens the most? Doesn't make sense.

If your name wasn't "sci fi" I could believe that!

Actually it seems plausible. I mean, to tell the world that the NSA is collecting cell phone data and calls ... that's pretty dumb. Tell us that they have started implanting RFID chips in baby boys while they are being circumcised -- THAT would be something to get up in arms about! But collecting cell phone calls? Anybody with a $50 police scanner can do the same thing. His "revelation" is small potatoes.

''"I wish I could say I was shocked at the reports the NSA is secretly spying on the private phone calls of millions of Verizon customers," said Paul in a statement. "However, this is a predictable result of a government that continues to erode our liberties while promising some glimmering hope of security."

100% true and the sheeple want that life sadly
11:04 AM on 06/11/2013
To bad he like you don't look at the facts before you spout such lunacy. The metadata, not personal data is collected in a huge data base that is only accessed once they have obtained a court ordered warrant for a specific number. If Paul took the time to do his homework he would have found out that no personal information is involved, no private information or eves dropping is involved, and the information is obtained only after a warrant is obtained. As usual he and his sheeple are clueless. This just another example of the clueless intrusive agenda of the republican and tea parties trying to control out lives based on their concept of morals, and religious leanings. Just goes to show how trust worthy these conservatives really are.

The information that the IRS collects is supposed to be kept secret, too, but that didn't stop some IRS employees from stealing that data and releasing it to outside groups.
