We all have to sacrifice. They give Halliburton 40 billion on a fence, we take cuts to Social Security. They spend a billion on equipment people can't use, we take cuts to Medicare. Shared sacrifice my left foot. They're all a bunch of lying crooks.

Against us no less - Didnt we learn when we sold all our scrap metal to Japan and then they bombed Pearl Harbor? Now we're arming Afghans against us? And supporting the Russian economy as well - how noble! Election day can't come soon enough!

But what people do you wish to remove from office? Remember, the military-industrial complex is running the show, no one or group of politicians does any more than rubber-stamp purchases like this.

I see 1/2 billion in taxpayer savings on the hoof, here. Troops home! Take away the Magic Checkbook, while you're at it, and stop arming one side against the other...the MIC wins every war...doesn't matter whose MIC it is. No more war materiel to foreign countries! Not Syria, not Afghanistan, shut that apparatus OFF.  Instead, work with Russia and China on more nonproliferation agreements.

"The Pentagon announced June 17 that Rosoboronexport had been awarded a $554 million contract for 30 Mi-17s to be used by the Special Mission Wing, a move that came just days after the House approved a 2014 defense policy bill that included a prohibition on contracts with the Russian agency. "

so, when is a prohibition not a prohibition?

Not sure but it could be its a 2014 bill. Thats probably the real reason behind the push to make this deal before that kicks in. It seems to me it would be a good idea to see what the Afgan government looks like in 2014 before we spend money on aircraft they can't use and would quite likley be blown up on the ground.

I think the Russian's idea of fighting a war is to kill everyone that don't look Russian. At least thats they way they were doing it in the 80's until we started arming the Afgans.Of course if we was waging war that way we would have been out of there 10 years ago. There is not a good answer to this situation. Lets pack up and go home and forget this notion of buying them aircraft from a country that is not particularly friendly towards us to start with.

Soviet equipment isn't made to last, and it's certainly not on par with our own, obviously.  If I were to arm a potential adversary, this is the way I would go.  You're right about our alternative timeline were it not for our ROE and the failed hearts and minds campaign.  We based this off of a British model that has no historical justification, hence the status of our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.  We bought into the propaganda by Templer, Kitson, and Thompson.

Afghan's have never been ruled by a super power. They all have been kicked out.....ask the British! 700 Afghans killed off 20,000 British in the Kyber Pass as the British on elephants tried to invade from Pakistan or then India.

I lived in Kabul for 2 years in the 1970's and loved it.....too bad the Russians came in 1978 and lost their young ass's to opium and sand!
