There's a marvelous 2003 documentary called "Step Into Liquid," made by Dana Brown (son of the legendary Bruce Brown of "Endless Summer" fame). Doesn't involve "duckdiving" specifically, but it features extensive and mind-bogglingly beautiful under-the-surface footage of surfing, which these photos immediately brought to mind.

Imagining these images springing into full motion will give the barest idea of the astonishing effect, and it's only one of a multitude of rewards a viewing of this inspiring film affords

While no doubt some great photos, this is another example of HP's ridiculous "reporting". Anybody who does surf, knows that this is how you get beyond the breakers without getting rolled. "Ducksurfing" ~ where do you get this stuff?

So, such a secret should not be shared?  What is your point?

His point is they are not surfing underwater, they are duckdiving, which is a fundamental element of surfing learned at the very beginning (at least for shorter boards). There have and are 7 gazillion photos of people, especially women, duckdiving underwater. So both the photos and the description are ridiculous one for their unimportant and one for its incorrect definition. It would be cool if the author attempted to educate those that don't surf about what is happening in the images, why its interesting, besides the T&A. Instead they lazily misinform.

Amen, Joni. I was like, What the F are they talking about? This is how you paddle out without getting pummeled by everything between you and the lineup. o_0 As for a "sophisticated technique," er, I suppose. Maybe. If the physics of the thing are particularly confusing for the viewer.

I never surfed the big waves, but I've always enjoyed going under the big waves when snorkling. It's a pretty cool rush feeling the force of the wave above..

I watch surf movies, but these are the first really good underwater shots I have ever seen.  So for me, a new perspective. And a good one.

Nice photos, but if you're the surfer, you can't see this, you need to have lenses of some kind.

Duck diving isn't "so they can ride their boards under the surface of the sea", it's so they can paddle get under the waves that would otherwise cream them as they're trying to paddle out. Pro tip: you can't duck dive with a long board.

LOL :) Made me laugh

Yes, duckdiving is by necessity ~ sounds like the author hasn't had to experience why yet.

"Pro tip: you can't duck dive with a long board"

We did in the sixties before leashes or short boards. We would scoot up to the nose, wrap your legs around the board. The results were no where near as pretty but we and most of the board would make it through the smaller surf of Long Island
