Conservatives know that scientific and social research debunks everything that they pretend is "true"  whether it is global warming , biology, sociology or pedogogy. The only way they can continue to feed their propaganda as "facts" is to suppress or intimidate legitimate scholars and scientists. Remeber, these same kind of tactics were used under the Bushies to suppress scientific  Read More...

So this guy wants to ban Howard Zinn. I never heard of any progressive wanting to ban Ayn Rand or Milton Friedman. Do you get the difference, people? Can it be more clear?

Corporations are not people

Right wing corporate automatons are always for corporate state control, censorship, repression and subjugation. Not shocking to anyone alive for the last 20 years.

At least the Nanny State that liberals want works at the societal level, and liberals are open about what they want. Conservatives, while claiming to be for smaller government, actually want to create a conservative Nanny State that interferes in the smallest details of individuals' lives, like what goes on in people's bedrooms, what goes on between patients and doctors, and what college students should or should not hear. I wonder which is more of an oxymoron: "small-government conservative", or "conservative beliefs"?

The test of history's accuracy is not whether it makes you swell with pride today.
Our history is mixed, and contains both the heroic and horrific treatment of others.

Education need to include more than nationalistic propaganda.

Zinn's award-winning work provides a different perspective on American history. I wouldn't read it or teach from it uncritically, but then, I wouldn't read or teach ANY history text uncritically. Daniels was waaaay out of line. If you want to see real propoganda in the classroom, check out the "educational materials" produced and distributed for free by upstanding corporate citizens like the oil and gas and soft drink industries.

Great point! To use the phrase that Howard Zinn coined, "you can't be neutral on a moving train." All educational materials are biased, in one way or another, there is no comprehensive historical text which covers everything, and covers it objectively. Teachers are forced to decide which texts to include and which texts they don't have time for. I'd much rather prefer learning the history of marginalized peoples than the white washed history (see James Loewen's "Lies My Teacher Told Me") that is currently taught in schools.

my first thought was, 'how did this guy get to be President of Purdue??'

and then I got a few paragraphs down:

"The emails are raising eyebrows about Daniels' appointment as president of a major research university just months after critics questioned his lack of academic credentials and his hiring by a board of trustees he appointed."

ah, of course..... his hiring "by a board of trustees he appointed."

because Republicans can't get ANYTHING on merit these days. they can't win elections fairly and apparently, they can't get jobs fairly either.

this wasn't even just relying on a network, which lots of people do to get jobs.

this was blatant quid pro quo: he appointed them to the board and in return, they appointed him to the President slot.

Yes, Hoosiers can't "falsely teach American history in our schools" -- they must reserve that for science, teaching intelligent design instead of evolutionary biology.....
