If he is a vegetarian then why did he go out for hamburgers with Joe Biden a while back. No I think you have that wrong.
05:54 PM on 11/24/2009
As a vegetarian, let me just say: this menu looks DE-LISH!

Those tablecloths are the most vile color. I can't imagine having an appetite anywhere near them.
05:31 PM on 11/24/2009
Would have been really funny if they had hamburgers....
05:34 PM on 11/24/2009
too upscale for this setting!
06:03 PM on 11/24/2009
Not funny at all ... insulting for a whole host of reasons.
It's supposed to be an act of diplomacy or don't you think we need more of that in the world?

I love green and would never have thought of mixing the two greens, however, they are quite beautiful together. But, as much as I would like to go to a dinner at the White House, I don't think I could have eaten what is on the menu (sorry).

The tables look great and the menu sounds yummy. I can't wait to see what Mrs. Obama wears tonight.

And for all the people talking about the recession...it's a STATE DINNER...this will probably only happen maybe once or twice year at the most. I think it's good to have a little glamour even when times are tough.

Obama is courting India now? What can they offer us other than taking our JOBS?
05:34 PM on 11/24/2009
1.5 billion consumers for US products & services!

They didn't take the jobs, we gave them to them. It's our fault not theirs.

ARe you crazy? Of course it would have. Except there wouldn't have been arugula on the menu... Got to admit, that's worth a chuckle! Obamas, as pretentious as always!

Wow, some people use any excuse to criticize the Obamas. Now it's because of a menu they didn't themselves create. Petty, petty, petty. Get some class.
05:53 PM on 11/24/2009
what's pretenshus about arugula?

The chairs look really cheaply made and the bright colors, at least in the photographs, clash badly with the more subdued rug. The purple flowers are stomach turning with the tablecloth. I think I would have gone with yellows and yellow-golds. Mrs. Obama's dress is also a bit too similar. On the other hand, wasn't this all supposed to have taken place in a tent on the lawn? So perhaps the overall effect would have been quite different there.

You know nothing about Indian culture. Have you not noticed the beautiful, colorful sarongs Indian women wear? The colors are a tribute to their culture.

Well done Michelle!

EXACTLY. I know hardly anything about the Indian culture really, but even I know that the Western all-white tables and napkins would be bad form, as white is the funeral color in India.

I think it all looks amazing! Great tables, great menu!

I hate to burst your bubble, but Michelle probably had little to nothing to do with any of this. If you read the history of First Ladies you will find that staff does all of this. The menu is presented to the FL as a fait accompli. I suppose she could change it if she felt like it, but it would be very unlikely. Same with the tablescape. A State Dinner has strict rules of protocol and etiquette. I can't imagine Michelle being arrogant enough to interject herself into this situation. Although she is certainly welcome to take the credit.

It's Bollywood colors, very fitting for the occasion of State Dinner for Indian guests.
