Where does it say the boots are thigh-high? And so what if they are. Just order a pair myself -- from Nordstoms, not France. But who cares?
03:37 AM on 11/28/2009
I can't say about you, but IMO for a woman in her 40s, unless it's a costume, looks like she's trying to recapture her youth when she wears stuff like thigh-high boots.

I also don't think the First Lady has the figure for it. She has a generous hip line, and thigh high boots are not going to look attractive, even if she's in her 20s.

Of course, whether she even ordered thigh high boots is in question.

People are petty..what is supposed to do,grovel around in Walmart clothes? People did not have one drop of criticism for the Bush clothes, and now they want to jump all over President Obama and Michelle.
There's a gorgeous, hip family in the Whitehouse...get over it...props to Michelle getting CFM boots..!

The Bushes weren't in the WH when there was record unemployment, families being turned out to the street, and with a failing economy.

Whether we like it or not, appearances do matter. No one expects them to sport Goodwill fashions, but the kind of lavish extravaganza for the "state dinner" they held is inappropriate when so many Americans are suffering.

They spent taxpayer funds for that, and many taxpayers are having trouble feeding their families. Also, India has reaped the most profit for American jobs sent overseas.

So they squander taxpayer funds to honor India, which has benefitted the most from Americans being unemployed becuase of jobs sent overseas.

That's just not right, and no amout of excuses and rationalization will make it right.
12:14 PM on 11/28/2009
What planet do you live on? Bush gave America companies to have outsource jobs..
01:30 AM on 11/29/2009
If you can provide examples of past presidents who opted out of a state dinner during a recession, your point may have more teeth.

America face it. We finaly have a young, savvy, sophisticated lady as our First Lady of the land. She can wear anything she wants and look good (cept for some of those belts) anyway...We cannot imagine Barbara Bush in thigh high boots nor do we want to so .. YOU GO FLO!
03:44 AM on 11/28/2009
I don't consider mid-40s to be "young."

Considering 40's are the new 30's and women in the United States on average live to be 80 years old according to the CIA.gov worldfactbook, I say she is looking younger than her years. I still would rather see her in thigh high boots than Laura, Hillary, Barbara, Nancy or Patricia.
08:02 PM on 11/25/2009
who CARES where her boots are from. isn't the rule to buy the most beautiful and worthy shoe? good for her. besides, it must be hard getting up close and personal glimpses of carla bruni's wardrobe all the time. now that woman can DRESS.
07:28 PM on 11/25/2009
For the naysayers, complaining about what our First Lady pay for her clothing and shoes. Mrs. Obama worked her way through school, and worked for years before becoming the First Lady. She has her own money. And her husband have his own money. She can purchase whatever she wants. She worked hard for it.
If you have a problem with that, then go to school get an education so you can make 6 figures to. Then you can purchase the same things if you wish. But don't, and stop bashing others for being successful. It sounds stupid and petty.
09:02 AM on 11/26/2009
Michelle's "success" and high paying jobs were gifts from the Daley Machine. The smartest thing she ever did was marry someone who gives great speeches and can write books...More power to her, and yes, she is a role model, for many..But getting your bread buttered on the right side goes a long way to enhance this kind of success. The Olympics pitch was a nice way of saying thank you to their many backers in their home city..Success is one thing, but going this far, this fast, is politics..always has been.
09:22 AM on 11/26/2009
So true. The last I've heard, they haven't filled anyone for her "special" position either at the University of Chicago hospital.

IMO, she and her husband are like King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. He may be genuinely interested in reform, but he has been kowtowing too much to the lackeys at his court and the corporate plutocracy--America's equivalent of the Nobility (or No ability).
10:12 AM on 11/26/2009
So the [democratic] Daley Machine ran the [private/conservative] University of Chicago Hospital system??? LOL!

You people are a joke. You think that because the word "Chicago" appears in the title, it's part of the city of Chicago. U of C is a private institution, yokels!

The best handbags may come from France, but Italy wins the footwear contest hands down. Unfortunately, we do not have premier footwear makers in the USA. Good ones maybe, but not the best of the best, probably because few Americans could afford them unless they work on Wall ST.I loathe almost all Republicans, but does anyone remember the fuss that was made over some of Cindy McCain's spending ? Her dress for her husband's acceptance speech was rumoured to cost 30,000 dollars, and it was her own money, and she is far wealthier than the Obamas. The huge fuss over Sarah Palin's RNC wardrobe ? I think she is dumb and scary, but fair is fair. It really depends whose ox is getting gored at the moment, does it not ?
07:52 PM on 11/25/2009
Correct for the most part--except that Palin was not spending her own money.

However, I do agree with the gist of your remarks here and below. The fact is, we do have a horrible recession with at least 15-20% unemployment. Foreclosure is happening at an alarming rate. And what do we see? Wall Street banksters earning as much as ever.

I think there is much ire at Michelle--rightly AND wrongly--because Obama has failed so many of his promises. He promised to curb CEO compensation. We've barely seen that (just look at AIG!) He promised to raise taxes on the wealthy. Yes, to a piddling 39%. He promised a public option--and then ended up caving into insurance. THIS IS NOT THE CHANGE I VOTED FOR! It's as though he only cared about the wealthy and forgot all about the rest of the "little people" who' ve made plenty of small donations, campaigned for him and voted for him.
08:37 PM on 11/25/2009
What a liar. Obama never promised a public option or to curb CEO compensation during the campaign.

When the economy tanked in September, he said raising taxes in the worst recession since the Great Depression was bad economics. Even Krugman agreed that would be bad for the economy.

And that payroll tax cut, extension of food stamps, unemployment benefits and 65% COBRA benefits payments were all for the rich, weren't they. {snark}

You need a new t r o ll script. This one is played out.
01:34 AM on 11/26/2009
The best way to get out of a recession is to spend. If she has the money she has every right to spend it as she pleases. It's her money, she earned it. There are too many things that need fixing in this country, you're being petty.

WHILE MANY OF US ARE WORKIN' (if we're lucky)OUR BUTTS OFF TO SURVIVE OUT HERE IN THE HEARTLAND OUR FIRST LADY IS BUYING (maybe)FRENCH MADE BOOTS! AND HER DAUGHTERS ARE WEARING DESIGNER RAGS~NICE! INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BE ANOTHER JACKIE O, OUR FIRST LADY WOULD DO MORE TO DIGNIFY HER POSITION BY FOLLOWING THE EXAMPLES OF TWO OF OUR MORE ADMIRABLE FIRST LADIES, ELEANOR ROOSEVELT AND LAURA BUSH.

People are so petty, if our first lady didn't look sharp at every appearance you'd have something NEGATIVE to say about that. Her husband makes a salary and what he spends it on is his business! Just because the country is on hard times doesn't mean the Obama's have to pretend they're broke. Bad enough they haven't been able to enjoy many of the perks other first family's have. Noticed last night they used previous first family china because god forbid they follow tradition and order Obama white house china! Why would anyone want our first family looking or acting like poor peasants!
05:54 PM on 11/25/2009
Whatever the Obamas due under these circumstances, you should truthfully ask yourself if you would react the same if McCain was living so large at the expense of taxpayers. During the campaign, Cindy McCain, with loads of her own money, spent big to look great. I found that annoying as well. This isn't a petty issue at all. So if unemployment reached 20 percent would you then see all this glitz from this WH as perfectly acceptable? So at what point is spending lavishly in poor taste?

Come now.. are you taking your "marketing" cues from Fox "News"... thigh-highs to sensationalize a story when in fact they were calf-high boots!

Poorly executed I would say in terms of your providing accurate information. I AM NOT IMPRESSED!
05:45 PM on 11/25/2009
I think that they tried to sensationalize the story, as well. When I read the headline, I thought, "Thigh high boots: They're probably for Barack. (lol) Why are they announcing this?". Now I know they were just trying to hype up a lame story.

Probably a deliberate "mistake" meant to titillate some. But never mind, thigh-high or calf -length - is nothing sacred? Poor woman can't order boots without it making news.

You all have gotten so tacky. I agree with the poster who asked if you did this type of reporting with other first ladies. You did not. By continuing to report on Mrs. Obama's every move and every purchase - for which she uses her own money - you continue to fan the flames of racism and derision amongst all of the ignorami who you lead to believe their tax dollars are being used to purchase her wardrobe (as they were for the republican vice presidential candidate last year). Please stop with the flame-fanning! We have enough problems without you adding to them.

People are interested because she is Michelle Obama--and don't forget Huffpo hasn't been around all that much to comment on the shopping activities of other First Ladies. (I mean for the most part who wanted to comment on Laura Bush's dowdy fashions?)

And I don't think the criticism is always necessarily racist. Don't forget people here have raked Laura Bush and Cindy McCain over the coals for their expensive duds esp. at the Repug convention: so wrong when the economy is poor and their husbands have helped fuel the present economic crisis.
