If you are self-centred enough to post 100 selfies a day you are probably in a deep and meaningful relationship with yourself.

Dear Pope!
HuffPost has articles about yoga. I don't do yoga. I usually don't read the article - if I shared my anti-yoga feelings in the Comments ... well, I wouldn't. This article is meant for those who use Facebook. Get it?

It's getting to the point that the smartest thing to do is NOT post personal information on the Internet at all and probably safest to just stop using Facebook. Everything you post will be searchable by anyone for eternity and newer search technologies in the future will expose even what you now think is private.

What idiot would post anything they want to remain a secret? People like you kill me. FB is for sharing photos of the kids with friends and family who are distant. It is not something to spill your heart and soul into.

Unfortunately, most of my fb friends are overseas so I do have a purpose for it. If I were in the states, I'd have deleted that thing ages ago. So pointless! The only thing I use it for is as a place to share pics of my kids with my family. So sick of the spam that my friends post there. Just super boring. I check in maybe once a month now. Fb is ripping advertisers off. They have no idea how few people who have accounts actually use it regularly. My last post was like two months ago.

What's amazing to me is that many of the same people that wring their hands and cry about the NSA and the fact that they're obviously interesting enough to spy upon (which they most certainly are not) are the ones who post their every waking moment via audio and video and GPS to Facebook.

When it comes to privacy concerns, Facebook is the shark, while the NSA is the minnow.

I've blocked all of Facebook from my router and my mobile devices, whether they be referenced by domain name or IP range.

Oh, and Twitter is exactly the same thing.

Just say no.

It would help if we also address the enablers who post comments on the photos - - "Looking good!", "Hello sexy!" - - and all the rest. Can we see a study about liking them less too?
08:47 PM on 08/15/2013
Exactly! Every time my neighbor posts a duck face photo (she's 50+ and very overweight) with her morbidly obese daughter (who's in college), she gets a string of comments loving it and saying she's looking good. Maybe the people commenting also weigh 300 pounds....seriously, I don't get it. I see the picture and think, "Oh my goodness...." and then see all the comments about "looking good!"....

After being on FB for a couple of years, I finally had to hide at least half of my friends posts... some people are not the same in person as they are online. Some of my friends seem to believe that every thought, every scenario they find themselves in is just too important not to share. Hiding their posts is less rude than de-friending them... you can still be friends when you see them in person without having to view the constant stream of irrelevant tidbits from their lives. Also, you can still have a conversation with them if you want when they post a response on a mutual friends page that you don't have to hide. I know some may say it's rude to ignore them that way, but does one really have to listen to everything a friend has to say all the time to remain friends?... no, it's not.

While I understand that technology will always improve and more forward, I wish that today's kids got to understand the importance of deep, true friendships and communication. It's not how many people you can "friend", or who can post the most images. The personal connection that time allows for writing a hand written letter or a face to face visit..these are acts that required invested time. I can't imagine how different things would have been if we were simply "friending" one another on something like FB or Twitter back when I grew up in the 1980s...and that's not that long ago. Things are often too quick, too impersonal and lack real thought & heart.
09:48 PM on 08/15/2013
I agree with you. Unfortunately people my age (30s) have been sucked in by social media even though they didn't grow up with it.

I traveled a lot as a child and always wrote handwritten letters and sent postcards to family and friends. I always send handwritten Xmas cards. No one my age appreciates it.

I have a high school friend who has 400+ 'friends' on Facebook. One day she wrote a post saying that she was in her 30s and didn't know how to make friends. Huh? I would call another friend to see if she wanted to hang out, and she would make excuses as to why she didn't call back, then she resorted to communicating by email only. And another friend wanted to come visit me when I moved cities but would only communicate through FB. She couldn't even call me on the phone to meet up. It's getting pathetic, ridiculous, and depressing.
