LOL, told you so. You lib's are at fault and you walk away. 60 plus years to destroy it. This is a reason for no more debt ceiling raises. Shut down the government.

60 years,eh? Just about the time when the Republican inspired freeway system started to butcher the city.
07:59 AM on 09/14/2013
The worst part of the story of Detroit is the way the Republicans reacted after winning the state legislature; taking over the city and the school system by appointing all kinds of unelected leaders, taking funding out of a struggling city, and utterly failing to use any of Michigan's money to help its most important city... Then they go around screaming for all to hear how it's entirely the fault of "the liberals" that the largest industrial city in the country lost its tax base to globalization, and they proceeded to drown it to death. Now, they are demanding that the people who stayed, the people who worked and fought and the families of those who died for Detroit, they be the ones to take the financial hit.

This is an unfortunate and dangerous precedent to set for a poor, struggling city in an increasingly poor, struggling country. This strategy will be repeated for the financial and political gain of anyone who can get away with it in post-industrial American cities.
09:55 AM on 09/14/2013
LOL, the rason unelected people were put in charge was because the elected couldn't put viable economic policies in place.

I saw where someone is blaming Bush for this failure and I completely AGREE 100%. I would NEVER EVER believe that liberal policies could have contributed to the bankruptcy of this once great RICH city. It was all those republican leaders that forced bankruptcy on Detroit and made 70% of the people move out of the city since 1960!
07:23 AM on 09/14/2013
This is so funny. The liberals have controlled Detroit for over 60 years and have created an economic mess that only bankruptcy can solve. You can't just continue to raise taxes and create wards of the state and expect every thing to go on like this forever! People got tired of this and 70% left (probably the most production 70%).

Even funnier is the amount of money they spend on education and the results of the test scores.

American, this is your future if you continue with your liberal policies, Of course I think it is already too late when you consider the unfunded libilities like SS and medicare! And now you are even going to put more people on the program by granting illegals the right to be citizens.

Perhaps Detroit would not have failed if the Bush recession never took place. Retirement funds were cut in half, yet the city was still responsible for paying the agreed amount. Wall street destroyed Detroit.
09:40 AM on 09/14/2013
Of course I NEVER EVER believed the failure had to do with liberal polices.  No it is Bush's fault that Detroit is bankrupt!

Wall street and the Bush recession destroyed wall street. Money would be there to pay retirement funds if wall street wouldn't have been so greedy and went bankrupt. The government bailed them out though. What a mistake that was.

Detroit owes 16 BILLION to something like 100,000 creditors.  it can ONLY be saved through bankruptcy.

When the Obama Administration was bailing out the auto industry capitalists, that was called, in Orwellian fashion, "bailing out Detroit."

That bail-out included conditions upon "Detroit" that the capitalists weren't able to extract otherwise. Namely, the unions were called upon to make huge concessions. Now entry-level workers make $14/hour, half of what veteran workers in the industry make, without any the assurances workers of yesteryear could expect.

Now when it comes to the living standards and conditions of public sector workers in Detroit, the Obama Administration shakes its head coldly and tells them eat feces.

Obama has carried water for the capitalist class, the Pentagon, and the national security apparatus for five days running. He has been a massive gift that keeps on giving to the scum who own the economy and the political system in the United States. Yet many so-called progressives treat him like the savior of hope and opportunity. What a joke.

Capitalist democracy is a compete and utter sham.

Yeah, but this is the city itself, run and controlled by Dems for decades and that's no joke. Every city in America so far that has gone bankrupt, are and always have been Dem controlled. Amazing, isn't it? It has nothing to do with capitalism.
01:54 AM on 09/14/2013
No it has everything to do with capitalism--that is, unless you want to claim that unemployment, disinvestment, and poverty don't concentrate themselves at very high rates in certain places across the capitalist landscape. To blame these blights on one of the two capitalist political parties, as if they are somehow the product of policies antagonistic to capitalism, is absurd.

It is hardly surprising that people places experiencing very high concentrations of poverty and want vote for the Democrats when the alternative is the blatantly plutocrat-friendly Republican Party. But the votes cast by Detroiters don't change the balance of power in this society, nor do they have any appreciable impact on policy decisions that determine where unemployment, disinvestment, and poverty are found and at what levels. No, these decisions are made by a tiny fraction of the population that controls the vast majority of wealth in this society (people like the Walton family, whose net wealth exceeds the bottom 40% COMBINED). Voting in general is a sham for this very reason: the important decisions aren't made in arenas subject to democratic input. And this is especially true when we're talking about governance on the city level. Even if we assume that the politicians of Detroit were all sincerely concerned with alleviating unemployment and poverty (which, being that the Democrats are best understood as a foil for the ruling rich, if not their outright stooges, is not a safe assumption), it is still the case that they have very little power to
09:10 AM on 09/14/2013
Apparently you are unaware that the largest municipal bankruptcy up to this point was Jefferson County Alabama - a Republican stronghold.
04:51 AM on 09/14/2013
The salaried staff were screwed in the "fix," not the union members. The treatment was so inequitable that even the President of the UAW wrote a letter to the White House complaining. This topic is the subject of on-going congressional hearings because it is clear that the unions bought special treatment through huge campaign contributions.

It's true that NEW union members don't have the same treatment, but on the salaried side NONE of us got saved.
12:24 PM on 09/14/2013
My point is that it was a giveaway to the bosses.

An argument could be made that it was also a giveaway to the union if by the union one means an institution with interests that are distinct from the interests of working class people generally. It's job is to deliver labor peace in return for a cut of profits; as such it is structurally inclined to make deals like the putrid one hammered out in the bail-out.
.
That said, the bail-out did in fact gift the bosses with concessions that it was unable to extract without it--and these concessions *to* the bosses were portrayed as concessions *made by* "Detroit." That most of the concessions that the bosses got were in the form of a massively lower wage bill for new hires, with much less taken from veteran union members, is typical of the way unions work and in no way makes the concessions less real.

The Baggers have no common sense of concept or observation. Lost in space with no real facts and only Koch bros. talking points. Even after David Koch admitted that he was playing the Tea Party for "suckers" (in a Salon interview last weekend) the Baggers still think they're relevant somehow. We'll pull most of their teeth in 2014 and send most of their representatives to the toxic waste dump where they belong. Hang in there cap and do what I've been doing more of lately...giving them the 'fickle finger of flag' award until they are permanently banned from these threads. If I get a stone in my shoe, I remove it.

When was Obama a "constitutional scholar"?

- He has published no papers on any aspect whatsoever of the Constitution. Zero. No papers on any subject, for that matter.
- He was a law LECTURER, which is not a Professor, on Civil Rights law, which touched on some limited aspects of the Constitution.
- He never litigated a case on the basis of constitutional law.

So enlighten us, what did he do to become a "constitutional scholar" and when did he do it?

Folks, Detroit is part of the United States. Saying Detroit is not worth saving is giving up and giving in to our economic problems and it sn't the answer. With the billions of dollars congress approves for aid to foreign countries, I am surprised that there are Americans who do not want to send aid to a city in our own country. Yes, there has been corruption, incompetency, and other hugh mistakes made not only in Detroit but all across our country. But we can change these things. Americans are a resilient people and we can do better than to allow Detroit to decay out of existance. If America can't help America how and why should we offer to "help" foreign countries? SAVE AMERICA!

Pictures 18 and 22, the Michigan Central Depot is owned by BILLIONAIRE Matty Mouroun, who also owns the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit, along with several trucking companies. It hasn't fallen into disrepair, it has been vandalized by people who consider themselves urban explorers. They come from all over south eastern Michigan to do this. Its my understanding that new windows are going to be put in place, along with a new roof.

Picture 26, the teens, ages 16 and 17 were from the suburbs and were going to buy prescription drugs illegally from their uncle in Detroit. They apparently ran into the wrong crowd. They were stripped to their underwear and taken to this field off French Road near the Detroit City Airport and show in the head.

Picture 29, The Packard Plant is where luxury car were made until 1958 when it closed. It's had a few different businesses there since then. The same urban explorers go to the Packard Plant as the MCD. Scrappers have taken a toll on this building too. Copper wiring, wooden paneling in the office areas, and steel structure metal has been taken from this building. the current owners have failed to pay taxes on the property.

Picture 34, the Hotel Eddystone built in 1924 and registered on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. In 2005, the ground floor and second floor were bricked up to prevent looting of the building. Talks have been in process for making the building into condos.
