The world has become so weird these days. One no longer knows what is real, what is fake, and what is fabricated. Didn't know most international soccer games were rigged. Bribery is rampant. That being said, congratulations Oracle team. You certainly deserve that victory.

Some billionaire with too much money and time on his hands hires a bunch of mercenaries from all over the world to race in his expensive toy for "America," and the rest of us are supposed to be impressed? I don't think so. And where is the diversity on this team? Shouldn't there be more minorities, or do the rich get a pass on diversity?

I see, so you believe that the Dodgers are from L.A., and the Giants are San Franciscans... I've got some Canadian bacon from Chicago, and French bread from Oakland - should I throw it all out?
07:48 PM on 09/27/2013
Do you really want diversity or do you just want the best sailors? I guess the answer depends upon whether you want to win or just make yourself feel good about yourself.

If you really want diversity, why not complain that the NBA and NFL are 90% black? Where are the Asians, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, Italians, or Caucasians? Could it be they're not many that are good enough? Or do you prefer we have a quota system for all sports?

The America's cup is a joke. At more than a half billion per boat only 4 countries could with corporate sponsors willing to fork over the money. They should just change the name to America's Wealthy Corporation Cup

Sorry, New Zealand and congratulations for your stellar performance. Not to worry, though. It's not America's cup. It's "software billionaire Larry Ellison, Oracle Team USA's" cup. Not surprising that the team was docked two points for illegally modifying boats in warmup regattas and had to win 11 races to keep the trophy. I'm sure they will do anything to win so it becomes meaningless to most of us.

These boats are incredible. 45 knots under wind power only!

those foil boards and wing sails will trickle down eventuly to the cruising world, just like the wing keels of the 80's did.
02:30 PM on 09/26/2013
No wonder when only foils are in the waster. Hydroplane is the best name for thee delicate yet ugly contraptions, that can only race in a narrow range of wind and wave conditions.
03:08 PM on 09/26/2013
Well, yeah, but if you've been in the diaper on a Hobie at 25-30 knots it's hard to imagine a boat four times the size doing close to fifty. That's all.

Sailing is an upper income game. Most Americans can't afford the exposure to it that they can with football, soccer, basketball, baseball and even hockey. However, that's not the only problem with the Cup.

While Indy, NASCAR and other racing leagues do ok, Formula 1 has struggled for many years. Why? Because the cars and teams cost so much that there's very few people who can afford teams. Yes, only billionaires own NFL teams, but many more could by them if the league wanted to expand. F1 and the Cup would love more teams, but their costs are so much higher for a much smaller return it's a much bigger conspicuous consumption waste than the professional leagues.
09:06 AM on 09/26/2013
One of the reasons the NFL does so well is that it is a non-profit corporation....with the head officials making millions, as per usual. The reason the rich are so wealthy is in part that they DO NOT PAY their fair share.

Add to that the fact that MLB has an anti-trust exemption.

NFL teams are worth $1 - 3 billion. Hardly accessible, even for many billionaires.

$100 million or so to field an America's Cup challenge seems cheap by comparison.

The America's Cup races were live streamed on youtube. Perhaps this is the way to make sailing more accessible.

Very few teams are owned outright and those have been owned for decades. Most are owned by groups of owners who want to buy into that aspect of conspicuous consumption.

On the other hand, Ellison funds his own team and he just competed against a team that needed government funding to exist. A very different level.
