I really hate when things like this come out, and people respond to things they think 'black' people should get over. Can we please remember that black people are not the only people of color in America. I say this as a black woman. I feel like people keep seeing this as a black vs. white issue and it goes well beyond that. I don't only want to see more Kerry Washingtons and Idris Elbas, I want to see more Mindy Kalings and more Sofia Vergaras and more Ming-Na Wens.

How does America really roll? And obviously it has no hang-ups about foisting false images of itself upon the world stage.

Why should she move to another country? I'm sure that the people behind all of the big social changes in this country (like the civil rights movement, the women's rights movement, the current LGBT movement, etc.) were at some point told to get over it and "move to another country," but they didn't, and it has more than payed off.

it did say PEOPLE OF COLOR not just BLACK PEOPLE !!!

The lack of diversity on TV is directly related to money. Shows that sell well are able to secure advertising dollars which assist in the financial success of the network. Additionally, If the industry would open their mind and hearts to people of color then the opportunity for an award would become much more realistic. I'm in favor of starting a color slanted Emmy to create opportunity for all people of color and to shine the light on the lack of diversity demonstrated at the Emmys and on network TV. When we realize it all comes down to the mighty dollar then organized action will result in change. Target the advertisers who will in turn force the network to broadcast tv shows representative of their buyers. Its all about the benjamins. Moola. L'argent, dollars.

There really is no way to win this. Hollywood is hollywood and it's segregated not diverse and horrible to minorities, women and people over a certain age (especially if they are women).

We should let Hollywood be hollywood and start something that includes everyone else.

Hollywood is so "established" in terms of image, lexicon, etc. does something that includes everyone else stand a chance? And would the diverse audience embrace it?
04:41 PM on 09/30/2013
If it is quality, then yes it stands a great chance.

Scandal is a ridiculous show. Barely plausible concept to begin with, silly writing and truly bad acting. Ms Washington is pretty, energetic with little acting talent, except maybe over-acting.

The Diversity gap in the NFL is staggering!
04:34 PM on 09/27/2013
Comparing the NFL to the Emmy's is a stretch. Anyway, acting is a craft that's learned. Head Writers and casting directors can be more open-minded in their hiring of actors and writing teams. Actors shouldn't be turned away because casting directors aren't looking for Asians, Latina, Blacks, etc. If the part is really about the character not a historical piece, let the actor have an opportunity to audition for the part.
07:14 PM on 09/27/2013
as for diversity in the nfl tell the white owners the white general managers and all the white personnel people to seek out caucasian talent. blacks hold no power in major sports here in plantation america. or If you do not like that become a hockey fan where the only thing black is the PUCK. LOL

Why doesn't Huffpost feature and article about the lack of diversity exhibited in the Source Awards, or the BET Awards?

Probably even less than the number of blacks who compete for the Emmys.

But, that doesn't mean that a White...uh...artist...should get a BET award just to promote diversity, either.

Awards are given based on merit. Not race.

Blacks should not get awards they do not deserve simply because they're black.

Create our own black tie Emmys. We don't need them folks. Stop watching it because you know it will NEVER change. Move forward ya'll.
11:35 PM on 09/27/2013
Absolutely! For many years, Hollywood has had a pathological relationship with Black people. Some of the most dynamic and creative performers have been African American. These performers have been watched, studied, and imitated, but are seldom afforded as many opportunities as the people who try to copy them.

I wish more black writers and directors have a better chance at showcasing their work via network television. Would be great to see black actors getting better parts. I can say a myriad of things concerning the work of Tyler Perry, but when we have people like him putting out so many projects that lack substance, it makes it hard for blacks to demand a show that requires character depth etc. Look at Scandal and how we made it controversial because the black leading lady has some serious personal issues outside of her being controlled and having it together in the workplace. We want our characters, somehow, to be perfect and great role models, when...our real life role models have many, many character flaws. That being said...I'm looking forward to the day where there's more diversity on and off the screen in the industry, and Tyler Perry starts hiring some great writers (I had to, I really had to - he has far too big a platform to produce such silliness).

I don't watch Mexicans on TV and I don't watch BET on tv and more and more, I am not watching OWN on tv. I am an American, I do have a choice, don't I? Let the Mexicans get their own awards programs; same as the blacks (I believe the blacks already have this) I just don't care. This country has many many race-named awards that are NON-white in all walks of life. It is time that we have more WHITE-named awards.

I am "an American" too. If awards are going to be given out for "American television" ALL persons in broadcasting should be considered to win awards. If only whites are considered and they are always the only winners this is what institutional racism is. A part of the society[in this case television] in which those who are not white are not even considered viable to enter.Maybe they should rename it the White American Emmys. Haters just don't understand,in fact they "just don't care". Then they claim minorities are "racist" for having their own awards shows when they aren't included. I've seen Claire Danes in movies and on t.v. as a young girl. She has always been,in my opinion, an excellent actress. However, when there are so many times that non-whites have been over looked it puts white talent into negative question.

Whites aren't the only ones considered in the Emmys.

Kerry Washington was considered. She just didn't win. She lost to Claire Daines.

I don't see anyone complaining about the lack of diversity in the BET Awards, or the Source Awards....
