The latino community continue to submerge itself in self hatred and bigotry. Many latin countries actually import white people to make themselves whiter, it's pathetic. This girl is Latina, skin color doesn't matter. Being latin isn't a race. If this were an Asian girl I would support her for being crowned Miss Latina as well!!

The Huffington Post headline is wrong. It was a Hispanic beauty pageant, not a Latina beauty pageants. Millions of Latinas, including Afro Latinas, are not Hispanic. Some Asians are Latino and some also are Hispanics. Latinos and Hispanics can be of any race.

As I understand it, the child's family could not provide written documentation showing that her family was from the Dominican Republic-the latter is the reason for her being stripped of her title. I don't believe it has anything to do with race.

Exactly. How hard is it for the parents to prove one of them is half dominican? The fact that they did not provide proof means they were deceptive.

The question is, were ALL participants asked to validate their "hispanic" status. If not, then we know the real issue at hand.

Well, it would be reasonable for the pageant to have confirmed that BEFORE the little girl participated, don't you think?

That's my thought. In the future they might want to consider requesting documentation with the entry application.

Over 95% of Hispanics in the USA are non-African, so I am at a loss as to what the writer is trying to say regarding the future.
More importantly, this is a non-issue. For in the United States, Black people and African images are everywhere present--from magazines, movies, government, etc. Considering that Blacks only account for 12% of the population, one can reasonably conclude that they are over-represented in the media, sports, films. Indeed, there is not a magazine or movie that doesn't have black people in the US. By contrast, Hispanics are invisible in the US.

What on earth does that have to do with this little girl being told she's not "latina enough"? And for the record, I know plenty of black hispanics in the U.S. Pro baseball and Hollywood is fill of them. Look at Zoe Saldana and Tatiana Ali.
08:30 AM on 09/29/2013
I know plenty of Chinese Hispanics, but I never hear Chinese and other Asian Hispanics demanding and screaming that Hispanics are Asians. Chinese-Latinos know that the overwhelming majority of Hispanics are not "Asians", and they leave it at that.
There are Blacks in Italy, but most Italians are not Africans. We have some notion as to what most Italians "look like". There are White people in Nigeria, but it fair to say that the vast majority of people in Nigeria have kinky hair, thick lips, and wide noses. That is just a factual statement.

She wasn't told she was not "lateena" enough, her parents were asked to provide proof which they COULD NOT, likely because this was a fraud. There is no lateena culture, heritage, or nation. You meant to say "not dominican enough" which goes to show using the generic term lateena is useless.

There is a lot of self-hatred and ignorance in that community when it comes to skin color. I feel sorry for Jakiyah, because for the rest of her life she'll be questioned and rejected by those who share her ethnicity and heritage. How unfortunate that in the 21st century and the information available some in Hispanic/Latino community wear a cloak of self-hatred, racism and ignorance as if it's a badge of honor.

There is a lot of ignorance about the terms "Hispanic" and "Latino." Not all Latinos are Hispanic and not all Hispanics are Latinos. Jakiyah may well be Afro Latina, but this doesn't make her Hispanic. (The beauty pageant was for Hispanics, not Latinas.) All residents of Latin America are Latinos, but only those who reside in Spanish-speaking countries that were once Spanish colonies are Hispanics. Residents of Latin American countries that were colonized by France or Portugal are Latinos, but not Hispanics.

Citizens of the Dominican Republic, who are mostly black, are both Latino and Hispanic because they speak Spanish and because the country was once a Spanish colony. They share the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. The citizens of Haiti are Latino but not Hispanic because Haiti was a French colony and its citizens speak French and Haitian Creole. Thousands of Haitian live illegally in the Dominican Republic. The people who challenged Jakiyah eligibility probably suspect her grandmother was a Haitian living illegally in the Dominican Republic. This would explain the lack of documentation.

I have a question about Panamanians. The blacks I know from Panama are Spanish speaking and call themselves Black or Afro Latinos/as, but my understanding is the majority of them are Jamaicans or descended from Jamaicans that came from Jamaica to work on the Panama Canal. Are they both Latino and Hispanic?

Race versus Culture versus Ethnicity.. Black versus White versus Brown versus Light.. Portuguese versus Spanish versus French versus English.. People have been moved around so much the last 600 years, it's created a new breed of Races/Cultures, but the old stereo types still exist. Some East Indians are now using bleaching cream and some Chinese are adjusting their eyes to look more European. Who knows what the Original Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Africans, Indians did thousands of years ago to be Superior over another Race/Culture. Humans have always had tribal Warfare, Racism is just the Word of Day.

Race isn't involved in the pageant, which is for Hispanics. Hispanics are an ethnic group, not a racial group. The children of Cameron Diaz and Soledad O'Brien would be permitted to compete. Pageant knew Jakiyah was black when they accepted her as a contestant. However, the parents of other contestants challenged her ethnicity. Hispanics can be of any race. Residents of Latin America and their descendants, regardless of race, are Latinos, but not all Latinos are Hispanic. Only residents of Spanish-speaking countries which were once Spanish colonies and their descendants are Hispanic. Residents of Latin American countries that were colonized by France and Portugal are Latino but not Hispanic. For example, Haitians are Latino, but not Hispanic.

excuse me. the author is interjecting her own ideas of latina beauty. The little girl Jakiyah won the pageant because she is beautiful, not exotic. The author is expecting people to think a certain way about other people. Who is saying her color is a burden? who is saying that Jakiyah doesn't already carry herself with grace? Who is being discriminated against? Her parents couldn't prove her lineage, THAT'S ALL. She Won the Pageant. She is a Winner already, They voted for her as the most Beautiful. Did they make a mistake not requiring proof from the beginning? YES. For all we know another parent made the pageant directors check out of bitterness. And for some reason her parents couldn't provide any proof - that is weird! But that there is black latina beauties have never been up for debate, or ever been a question in any hot blooded latino man's mind.

You have no idea what you are addressing. This author is absolutely correct. Apparently your world is very limited and small. It is a known fact that "color" is an issue among all races and ethnicities. This includes Italians, Africans, all Indians, including Asians. The darker the hue, the perception of beauty is less. The whiter or lighter the hue or put bluntly...the more eurocentric one appears, then the game changes. Just broach the topic with Dominicans, Cubans, or Puerto Ricans. The author is in no way addressing the matter as you have perceived. Re-read for comprehension. She's addressing the "White Elephant" in the room that you obviously deny.

Irene L Caceres is correct. The pageant official who accepted her as a contestant and the judges who voted for her were obviously aware that Jakiyah is black. She looks Afro Latina, but the contest is limited to Hispanics, and not all Latinas are Hispanic. Her parents claim Jakiyah's grandmother was Dominican. This would make her an Hispanic because the Dominican Republic was once a Spanish colony, and its people speak Spanish. However, thousands of Haitian live illegally in the Dominican Republic. Haitians are not Hispanics because Haiti was a French colony, and its people speak French and Haitian Creole, which is a blend of French and West African languages. People who challenged Jakiyah's eligibility probably suspect her grandmother was a Haitian living illegally in the Dominican Republic.

You are absolutely correct. The pageant officials obviously knew Jakiyah when they accepted her as an entrant, as did the judges who voted for her. Her ethnicity, not her race, is the issue. Millions of Afro Latinos are not Hispanics. For example Haitians, who are mostly black, are Latinos but not Hispanics. Dominicans, who are mostly black, are both Latino and Hispanic. Thousands of Haitians live in the Dominican Republic, but they are not Hispanics. Some of the parents of the losing contestants probably suspect that Jakiyah's grandmother was a Haitian immigrant living in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, is also a Latin American country, but its people, who are mostly black, are Hispanic. The reason is that Haiti was a French colony. It's people speak French and Haitian Creole, which is a mixture of French and West African languages. On the other hand, the Dominican Republic was a Spanish colony. Its people speak Spanish and are Hispanic. Since Hispanics can be of any race, you can not tell who is Hispanic simply by their appearance. This is why the pageant officials ask for documentation.

The only country in the Americas to be freed from black colonial rule — neighboring Haiti — the Dominican Republic still shows signs of racial wounds more than 200 years later. Presidents historically encouraged Dominicans to embrace Spanish Catholic roots rather than African ancestry.

I think you meant to write "freed from white colonial rule."The Haiti Revolution was the only successful slave rebellion in the Americans. But today Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas as measured by the Human Development Index. This is why so many Haitian reside illegally in the Dominican Republic. Around 80% of Haitians profess to be Catholics whole Protestants make up about 16% of the population. Some Haitians combine Catholicism with elements of Voodoo. However, there prayers seem to go unanswered.

I am so glad you wrote this letter Icess. So many Afro-Latino boys and girls need to know they are not alone. I was there on the same battle grounds as this young girl and in the non-existent Afro-Latina population of 70's/80's Tucson, AZ most of my Latina classmates were evil. I was made to feel less than human many times from 1st grade to 6th grade, because I was trapped in the same classroom year after year. When Junior High came I was so relieved not to have to spend 7 hours with those miserable cuss'. My daughter doesn't experience it as much as me because she is very fair skinned, but my oldest son gets just as much crap as I did. I have seen some of their "friends" act all weird when they see me. I just tell my kids "true friends don't care if you're purple with stripes and don't call you a liar or fake based on the color of your skin". Once again I thank you Icess.
