Excellent idea. The government is an employer where it's the entire Legislative and Executive branch who decide how the government as employer is paid, and how government workers are paid. In order to avoid that the Legislative unilaterally stops paying 800,000 government workers all while keeping to pay themselves as employer, a bill that would end ALL paychecks when Congress as an employer would block the  Read More...

While one might appreciate Rep Nolan's legislative proposal, it's a pointless gesture. The median net worth of Members of Congress is $966K, the typical American household is $66K, and 47% of Congress are millionaires (PolitiFact-Georgia) (Rep. Nolan's reported net worth is between $700K - $1.5M). If Congress really wants to demonstrate they're "in touch" with American citizens, begin with subjecting themselves to the same laws the average American citizen is subjected to, e.g., ACA.

it is not pointless, we need to see who believes in leadership by example. When it come to the sequester for example, I have seen a lot of politicians from one party give up some of there pay and I have seen almost none from the other party do the same, that will be a factor in the next election.

More disingenuous than that is the declaration "voluntarily giving their paycheck to charity" a tax write off and contribution they normally would make every year.

Good point. If they give it to charity, it is a charitable contribution deduction and if they forgo the pay, do they get it all back later? Food for thought, but sometimes it is the thought that counts.

The problem is that this bill makes sense. You refuse to work, you don't get paid. Pretty frickin basic. I find it ironic that the people in congress who are so against entitlement programs would not be behind this 100 %. But then again it's all about the "Let them eat cake" mentality in Washington.

they are only against entitlement programs that they do not personally benefit from. Other wise it is wasteful government spending.

This would be impressive if only it were not just one more stunt. It's damage control and not serious problem solving.

Better to dock their pay today than face angry mobs later wanting to lop off their heads.

And make them pay back their last 5 years of pay since they have done nothing to earn it. After that fine them for obstruction and then throw them in jail for treason.

They must be punished and made an example of. They are used to getting away with these kinds of shameful behavior .

We organize protests in this country for everything under the sun......But we won't organize the biggest one for a Congress that shuts down government and expects to be paid?
How damn stupid and uninvolved are we...what the hell is wrong with us...the people.
Are we as stupid as they think we are?...I think we are.

I believe we have had enough of this crap.We need new blood and new tactics, these naysayers have had their say and now we will have a turn. VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN.
01:31 AM on 10/04/2013
Voters don't matter.
Money does. Voters who only have a vote and no money to influence and think they can make a difference are naive.
We should know this by now.

It makes sense. Their victims (800,000 federal employees and the rest of the Americans) shouldn't bear the brunt of the shut down. The people ( GOPTPers) who caused it should not be compensated.
01:39 AM on 10/04/2013
Nobody in the White House, Senate, or Congress should be paid during this time.

The only law that cannot be changed is God's law. So this amendment can be abolished, like anything else man writes.
