The Obama/Reid stonewalling strategy to inflict maximum pain on ordinary Americans is starting to crack.

You really ARE totally out of it, aren't you, charleydog? The Republicants and baggers, started this mess way back on election night 2008 when they were told "We will not work with this president." This is the result of them obeying that mandate. McCain lost to Obama, then Romney lost to Obama, so the Republicants and baggers, being the worst losers in the history of this country, have been having temper tantrums, trying to discredit Pres. Obama, and saying "no, no matter what" even if it hurts this country. For the last five years most of them haven't even been Republicans or Tea Party members - IMO, they have become seditionists and sedition has no party afilliation.

And yet it was Obama who ordered the parks to be closed, it was the democrat controlled Senate who rejected several funding bills from the house. How is that any better? How is that NOT a temper tantrum?

IMO you have yet to discover what happened to common sense. You've lost yours, never to be found again.

The National Parks should not be held hostage by an imperial presidency. IF states are willing to accept the financial obligations and cash flows of the parks, they should get the ability to run day-to-day operations. The parks can still be overseen as part of the national interest; vis-a-vis all recreational and environmental standards, but the states should assume control of the business side of the park and pay the feds for their costs to oversee the necessary oversight.

Less federal government is ALWAYS desirable.

It's congress that has unconstitutionally shut down the government. The President is not in charge of paying the bills.

Yes congress is as fault as far as the shutdown but it was the Executive Branch - led by Obama - who closed the parks.

Reopening Parks is more important that paying us for work we are doing everyday?

We work everyday without pay or any idea when we might get paid again because of Boehner.

Boehner GET OUT OF MY LIFE.
02:52 PM on 10/10/2013
I think you're a little mistaken. After the shutdown the treasury department (under Obama) decides where the money is spent. Maybe you would still be working and getting paid if he didn't hire more people to close open parks that didn't have people working in the first place. And FYI they are passing a bill to give everyone back pay, so enjoy your paid vacation.

yah, when? right after they pass the bill to reinstate the death benefit for veterans?...IF the shutdown and it's spending or not spending is the problem of the treasury department, then how come the congress has to vote to reinstate some payments to some groups?

Most National Parks do not allow hunting in the lower 48 and the vast majority of National Forests and BLM lands are open, except developed campgrounds - if that was ever important in hunting season, ... I expect the same amount of gut piles attracting howling coyotes at night.

so now our state taxes to be used instead of our federal taxes - when do we get a refund from the feds -
02:49 PM on 10/10/2013
NEVER. The shutdown was a result of Republican antics to please the Tea Party and the cry to pay to reopen the parks is coming from Republicans with angry constituents on their hands. The parks should saty shut until the Republicans act like grownups but our president also has to consider the loss in income to those innocent business owners caught in politics.

11:40 PM on 10/10/2013
Sorry, but regardless as to who caused the shutdown, it was part of the Executive Branch which determined how to shut it down. That branch is directed by the President.

So, yes, the President shut the parks.

The states should request land be transferred to their control. Get the feds out of those parks outright.

That is one of the worst and foolish ideas I have read all day. In many cases if the Federal Government had not set aside those park lands they would be strip mauls now and places were the 4x4 boys would go for some "Muddin" on the week end.

Do you really think that UTAH doesn't recognize the benefit of tourism and wouldn't protect it as well or better than the Feds do. Feds don't even keep illegals from tramping thru sensitive lands in Arizona.

02:26 PM on 10/10/2013
Oh, so obama administration is too determined to keep control by forcing states to pay for what is in their state to begin with. Feds have too big a footprint intrusions into states.

Feds won't pay for parks but stole the land in the states to control them and who can access them. States need to reclaim their property from the feds.

I thank God for the federal government without it we would be at the mercy of a country full of people full of themselves. Nothing worst that a self-centered, self- absorbed, person who doesn't know the meaning of "freedom". Scary thought.

Not exactly. To join the union, the mostly western states had to cede their (then) worthless mountains to the federal government; the more valuable riparian plains were homesteaded by farmers. There's mining claims but most abandoned due to cheap foreign competition (cool ghost towns which have some private stores). The rural mantra is still not to go up in the mountains "cause I ain't lost nothing up there".

I have nothing to say except
02:42 PM on 10/10/2013
The states would absolutely love to take on this responsibility permanently as the revenue generated to local economies and the ensuing taxes is profitable. And states like mine, Arizona, are not broke and have cash surplus in our rainy day fund.

Along with the revenue comes the cost and not all states advocates for this new trend. Besides, I am sure House GOP didn't want this side effect.

wait a minute!!!!! who in the hell does this goverment think they are? where does the land lay that is called a park? that is state land and the national goverment has no right to say that the states have to pay to keep them open.

F & F.....100 times...............I agree with you. They are full of it and any way they can get their dirty hands on money they will do it.............these parks belong to the tax payers and our Government needs to start to mind their own damn business and do what is right for this Country and not worry about petty stuff.................

I wonder which states will spend money to open parks by taking money from Education and Medicaid funds. I wonder if any states will spend money to reopen parks, then declare a budget deficit and solve the deficit by CUTTING TAXES.

Of course when the deficit gets even worse, the State Health Department's budget will be reduced.

Best of all we can blame it all on Obama even though it was the TEA Party bragging about how they were going to shut down the Government until the WW2 Veterans could not get into the DC Park.

The feds better keep the charities and the governors on speed dial -- with Boehner approving 6 week debt limit extensions -- ECONOMIC INSTABILITY for the federal government could be the new norm through the 2014 mid-terms.
