Relax people, here's a very large version of that photo and you can see that it's not "trees."-

It's not that far fetched that some scenario like that may have happened. Would explain the ancient Egyptian/Mars obsession.

Blow it up to high res and zoom in. They aren't trees. The follow the landscape surface. It's an optical illusion that they are standing up on ridge-crests. I was fooled too, BTW.

Very cool. It's amazing that we are looking at another world with such clarity. You have to love modern technology.

As a science buff I simply can't comprehend why some people drown themselves in the ignorant game of politics of the us vs. them mentality when we simply don't have time in one life to grasp all magic that our universe has to offer us. To give up the beauty of the universe for hate anger and was is truly insane. I can understand particle physics but the meek minds of those kind of people I will never understand.

I like your attitude.....and I'm a closet physics/cosmology geek myself. In "comprehending" the universe, it becomes clear how infinitesimal we are when the big picture is taken under consideration.

When you come up with a plan that defies the deadly radiation from the sun once out of the protective Van Allen belts of earth...

Let us know...

Without protection human kind does not live long at all in true open space....

However, the pictures are very cool...

Indeed , I remember as a kid back in the 70's staring at those few B & W Viking Mars photos and marveling at the fact I was looking at the rock formations of another planet. Look at us know and what we can see only a generation later at the click of a mouse in our homes wherever we are in the world.

Hopefully 1 more generation down the line and humans will be sending back pictures via live feed
( albeit with a 10 minute delay ) from the surface of that planet as they walk around and take rock samples back to their orbiting mother ship

_Somebody's_ making a big mistake here.

I do not for a minute buy the explanation that, "sand dislodged from the crests of the dunes cascades down, forming dark streaks."

Download the image(s) and take a look for yourself. Down-slope is down-slope and these "streaks" are NOT oriented in directions gravity would pull. You can actually see the ice _through_ the objects. These are projections upward! The CO2 slow is drifting - now, use your own experience with drifting snow - it APPLIES here!

If you look in the lowest part, center you will see a landslide forming. It looks like the bigger ones but fainter,
Trees or any other "projection" would cast a shadow, no shadows here, sorry.
06:49 PM on 01/13/2010
Looks like you were faster than me. Note also that the photo in the above article is cropped. The top of the bigger image shows streaks that would be growing upside down if they were "trees".

I was looking at that while you were posting here - thanks.

When I downloaded some of the images and looked at them close-up, I got to the image resolution (pixelation) before it was clear what was going on, but you're right that this view is better and from it I see why whoever thinks it's something falling down-slope.

...I'm still not satisfied with their explanation, but I'll retract my "projections upward" remark.

06:46 PM on 01/13/2010
The above image is cut down. Check out the more complete high-resolution image below (even this is not the entire image, but it is good enough)

http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/images/2009/details/cut/PSP_007962_2635_cut.jpg

It is clear from looking at the patterns of all the dark streaks in this image that the streaks are not protruding objects as they appear to be in the photo that accompanies the article. I don't know if the NASA explanation is completely correct, but they are obviously not trees or anything like trees.

What a lovely community! From what I can tell, there is a Martian standing beneath one of the trees, shaking his/her head, thinking that earthlings are stupid.

Looks like some significant erosion into some seasonal watercourses, rather than loggable mars timber. But if someone will pay my freight, I'm available for a recon consult. I have to warn you though, we are looking at some high hauling costs.
