Stop taking them away from their families and their homes. I think ALL living creatures would rebel - to this point - if they were captured, oppressed and made to work at useless, mind numbing jobs.

Hey wait a minute - that sounds a lot like us!

Leave them be - stop hunting them down and taking them for profit.

The orca will not be "put down," nor released. Why? Well, you don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg(s). It's all about money with these clowns, same as usual in this country. Money, greed, trumps human lives, whales, and whatever other species gets in the way of the "bottom line." This kind of thinking is what is sinking our once-great country these days.

And the article fails to mention that this particular dominant male whale has sired 15 calves making it a very profitable animal indeed.

What am I missing..??

If a dog attacks a person, 9 out of 10 times the dog is euthanized for a simple bite

This whale has KILLED three people. If it were a bear, an elephant, a shark or a PERSON, it would have been killed or at least prevented from killing more people??

I don't think the whale should be put down. The trainer's death was tragic, but her family has said that she wouldn't want Tilikum to lose his life as a result. I do think that SeaWorld's motives in keeping the whale alive are financial and not altruistic though.

My mother and I were discussing this last night and she said she can't imagine how it is for these whales to go from having an ocean to roam to being stuck in a tank. She now feels people should boycott SeaWorld and zoos for that matter (way to go Mom)!
11:18 AM on 02/27/2010
Count me in on the boycott. If these whales are as intelligent as is said, this whale may just have been claustrophobic and sick and tired of having to do tricks for food. Whales were built to cruise thousands of square miles of ocean every year, not be locked up in a small bathtub for life.

I watch in disbelief as a self serving Jack Hanna goes on the air and attempts to justify the captivity of these majestic animals. One need not be a rocket scientist, or in this case, an animal biologist , to know that the continued imprisonment of these animals is unjust and immoral. The argument that the scientific data gleaned from such practices somehow justifies the means by which this "new" knowledge is gained.....is weak at best. There has been a 4 to 5 decade long "investigation" of the whales behavior and I would proffer that the most important bit of data that has been learned has indeed been ignored by the likes of the Jack Hanna's and Steve Irwins' of the world. Whales belong in the ocean and not in an aquarium where the overarching goal is the acquisition of $$$$$$$$. For shame Jack Hanna! for shame!

Frontline doesn't mince words, nor take sides. You can watch the doc online or read most of it here. Especially tragic are the lengths Seaworld went to to capture wild orcas in the 70's killing many more then they caught. They utterly decimated the Washington state population and stopped only after laws were passed. Then moved their capture operations to Iceland. It's all about the Benjamins. Always has been. Always will be.

Well if it already killed a three people why do they keep using him for shows?

Just another note. If a dog had bitten three times, regardless of the death of anyone the dog would be put down. I love animals, but I am also logical about what to expect from them. I have an incredibly intelligent Border Collie. She is fiercely protective of her family, if for some reason we had to move somewhere and could not take her, I would have to have her put to sleep. It would hurt me terribly, but she would never accept new owners after all these years, and she would bite strangers, to her that's her job to protect her sheep. You have to use common sense when dealing with animals. And no matter what, no matter how much she is loved, she is still an animal, and should never be put before a human being.
09:14 PM on 02/26/2010
Wow, well, I'm glad the former owners of MY border collie, the same people that abused her in her first year decided not to put her down and took her to a shelter instead because now, she's happy and healthy and loved by people that aren't so full of themselves as to think she could only be loved by them or that she could only love them. JYour comment shows you to be insanely self absorbed.

People captured this whale to make it perform stupid tricks in front of people, taking it out of its natural environment and now it would be cruel to release it. AND they bought the whale knowing it had a past already. And you want it put down because it killed a human? Dawn Brancheau didn't believe they should be put down - she respected what they were, that even though they had been trained to perform with humans they were still orcas and still could be dangerous. It was a mistake on her part and she would probably admit that. But it was our choice as humans to put that orca into this situation.

Should have been released a long time ago, after the first incident ... but money talks eh?

I cannot imagine how horrific that must have been for the people there, and especially for the little ones. The animal should be put down, I'm sorry, it sounds bad, but he obviously cannot be trusted and probably would not make it in the wild after being in a tank so long. These animals belong in their own environment, and while it's fun to watch the shows, there is always a danger of this happening. God created all animals for a purpose, I am just not sure this is one of them?????

me thinks congress needs to do an investigation on this killer whale's second incident in 1999:

"the body of a man who had sneaked by Sea World security was found draped over him".......hmmmmmmmmm

I'd like to quote PinkoLefty, from The Dially Beastie, regarding the argument for this being deserved because... well, you'll see:

1. You're kidding, right?

2. Were there no serious writers available to comment on this story?

3. You're going to bring your screwed up theology into an amusement park death witnessed by kids?

4. God gave us dominion over domesticated animals?

5. Are you a ward of the state?

6. When my grandfather's bull tried to gore me for no reason other than the fact that he was just a perpetually pissed-off animal, was that an indication that he wasn't domesticated?

7. You're kidding, right?

8. How exactly did god manage to domesticate cows roughly 4000 years before he created the universe?

9. Do the people that take care of you let you go out on your own?

10. Who would have guessed that a whale jumping a human would lead to news sources jumping the shark and accepting god as an excuse for... anything?
