I am not into organized religion but this seems like a nice informal dinner that also includes some history lessons. I don't see a problem. I don't consider myself a true pagan but I like seeing Christmas decorations. Now, if only the White House would have a cool Wiccan celebration.

I can see the Bible Belt erupting into open rebellion because of this.

Here is a link showing the President hosting a Ramadan dinner. He has also hosted other dinners/ events for other religions. So can we please stop with the hate !

And to the right-wingers just because Farrakhan lives in the same city as Obama doesn't make him a friend. I guess Rahm and David Axelrod and the rest of the people in Chicago are friends of Farrakhan as well. Please get a clue !

Ahah! At last! Proof that Obama *is* a Muslim!

Heh. Seriously now, I don't "hate" Obama for hosting Passover, I'm just a tad suspicious. And of course, worried about how the various powers-that-be can spin this in various stupid directions. The American public is curiously easy to distract with the most inane topics.

The Seder is a beautiful tradition. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it also says so much about the beholder. Well done, Mr. President.

I read the article and was once again moved, touched and made proud by President Obama. To be alive at this time and to have him as the leader of this country is something I am grateful for every day of my life. I was moved by the decency, the respect, the caring that the President showed, and loved the idea of Seder as a White House tradition. Expansion, inclusion... what could be better? And then I started reading the posts.
Once again, those with an ugly axe to grind will do so at every possible opportunity, and this is just another opportunity. It's not really about the Seder. For the axe grinders it's about being jaded, bigoted, small minded and hateful. Whatever the issue, this is what they do. So grind away people. And while you're doing that, great things are happening, the world is changing and becoming more humane. So hate away.
You'll miss the whole point and the wonder of it all, but that's your choice.

So much for Obama being Muslim. Now people are attacking him for observing Jewish holidays. If he observes Christian holidays, he would be equally excoriated by his detractors.

If Obama were to host, or even participate in, a White House meal commemorating, I dunno, the Immaculate Conception or something intrinsically Christian like that, I can see the SOCAS (Separation of Church and State) Gestapo-like police go up in arms. In fact, I am amazed they still put up a Christmas tree in the WH every year. But, hey, Seder is not Christian so let's all go "Awwwwwww, how nice!!!"

I was surprised to read that Obama is the first President to hold a seder at the WH, but good for him.

Personally, I'm kinda meh about seders. I've been to a few. I find them boring and the food to be rather crappy. I'm down with delis and bagels, but most Jewish food is pretty bad.

Ginsberg was wrong. The Holocaust was quite simply an enormous crime, orchestrated by criminal sociopaths with unlimited power and perpetrated by otherwise ordinary people in a culture where bigotry and prejudice was the accepted norm.

To be frank, this reeks of politics, the same way all the other members of Congress slavishly kept going, "whoo!! Israel is #1" and flogging their pro-Israel credentials. I mean, I don't remember Obama sitting down to a Chinese New Year dinner.

... but, on the other hand, maybe I'm just being too jaded and cynical. As long as it's not going to be enshrined in law (as in, "all sitting Presidents must host the Passover dinner"), he can do whatever he wants with his own private time.

Mazel tov Mr. President. I think this is great and don't see why more professing African American Christians do not observe the Passover, although, you may be surprised to find out than many do. Not that you have to have all of the Jewish food etc, but Passover is a beautiful story, and it would not do any harm to give thanks to God and for his mercy especially any people who are descended from any form of Slavery. If any group of people can understand the Mercy of God, and his promise to keep us through tremendous adversity, it is us!

Next week, we will see Pagan Easter Eggs and the Easter Bunny, Sunrise Service at the Cemetery, Passion Plays and Pancake Breakfasts. Millions of folks will eat a Ham, and children all over the country will dye boiled eggs in pastel colors and wake to find the "Easter Bunny" stopped by with a basket of candy. People will get up and put on a new dress, hats, kids in new Easter clothes and march off to Church. What most of these traditions have to do with the Resurection of the Christ, I have no idea, but it all happens in America. Those who would criticize the Obamas for observing Passover forget that next week, they will also host the Annual WH Easter Egg Roll! Good for you Mr. President.

"but Passover is a beautiful story"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Pasover is about how the Angel of Death went to each Egyptian household and killed their firstborn child / son, but "passes over" the Israelites' homes? A fascinating story, but hardly one I would call "beautiful".

I look at this from a "boss" perspective. The CEO I work for too is very considerate to his staff and shows it in every way possible. For that, he is greatly admired and respected. Pres. Obama must be a great boss too for he shows his appreciation to his staff like participating in Seder. He has compassion for everyone on his staff which translates into he has compassion for all Americans including the least amongst us.

Restricted is wrong word. Inclusion is the appropriate word. This article demonstrates he cares about those no matter how small their contribution may be. These employees during the campaign held their small celebration and were surprised and warmed by a visit from their employer. He didn't have to do that yet he did. Big man. Big heart.

Bonuses!! GOP would rush to the nearest microphone and give some ugly spin to a nice gesture.
