The Fundamentalist Right-Wing heads are exploding again as a determined and dedicated young woman makes her attempt at a goal she obviously strongly desires.

Without reading the thread there is absolute outrage hurled over "parenting" and "foolishness" and all the other reasons not to do a thing. These mindsets are what have given us the Corporate Government in the USA.

Bravo and safe journey; follow your bliss Laura.

Your paranoia is getting the best of you. There is no political side involved in this. This young woman is undertaking a voyage that could very well be the death or her. If at some point in her foolish quest, she runs into trouble, her parents will go on tv begging everyone to come to their aid. Rescuers will have to risk their own hide to come to her aid not to mention the cost associated with that.

How lame for you to call a young girl's dream "foolish," I don't know what you've accomplished, but I doubt it even holds a candle to what this young woman has.

Don't worry about the rescuers, that is their job and they're not interested in your pity. The Australians even refused reimbursement for the last rescue that happened; they don't think like you people. Why not spend your time doing something productive, like helping folks?

Yes, it could be a fatal voyage. Which could be fatal for ANYONE who embarked upon it. Man, woman, old, or young.

So, your point is?

Hi there, Kevin Atlanta, who is soon to be unfanned. I have voiced my concern about this
issue with some degree of dudgeon. One reply suggested that I was a coward who
had no life to speak of when I showed this concern, at first politely, until this particularly
ugly ad hominem attack was returned to me. That aside, you need to know that I am a liberal, and as far from fundamentalism as you are from fairness. Unfanned.

Amazing how many people had a hard time comprehending that bit. Doesn't give me much hope for the future, that folks are going to be able to read stuff and understand what it says.

no, billyclub has a point. we all understand the takeoff was in secrecy, we are talking about the post-takeoff publicity they are now seeking.

Going single handed is a waste of what could be a wonderful trip. Only thing worst would be trying to do it the fastest.

I hope her parents are arrested for letting her do this. I'm so sick of these pint-sized wealthy narcissists trying to get famous and putting so many people at risk in the process.

did they put a gun to her head and make her do it?
I have two teenaged boys and have trouble getting them to remain committed....this young lady seems well trained and we must allow her to face a challenge if she chooses.

Sport, you may be confusing someone else with Laura and her parents.

She'll be mostly in the tropics for this voyage. As long as she watches the hurricane seasons and chooses the N or S hemisphere depending on them she should be fine. This is not a highly demanding trip like sailing in the extreme southern ocean.

Yet another one. Read the article. She set sail in secret. It's called English.

So what's the use of sailing if she can't get that record? Nonsense... There is nothing to prove and nothing to achieve so why stay home and continue studying?

She could care less what you think and would rather you not even pay attention to her at all; this is one girl's dream and it has NOTHING to do with you, nothing do do with proving anything and nothing to do with a record.

You will never understand, and who cares?

So , what would some of you prefer ? That she sail the ocean alone or get in a car with a drinking teenage driver . She is too young to do this . But hell , 14 is too young to do anything . And who are we to say yea or nay ? Life gives us nothing in the way of a guarentee . Whether she dies , is rescued , or completes her journey . It is a story . And whether you love this life or hate it . There are only two possible outcomes for each of us with respect to it . Either we will have lived in vain , nameless but to God . Or we will have lived and be a name , remembered for our achievement or our failure . Do not begrudge those who risk both . Lament those who risked neither .

You're not thinking of the cost of rescuing these moron kids when it all goes wrong. It's intensely irresponsible.

It cost no more than rescuing moron adults when it all goes wrong. The reality is that WAY more "adult" sailors need to be rescued then "kids".
01:48 AM on 08/22/2010
This just goes to show - bad parents are a world-wide phenomena. Is it going to take one of these kids not coming back for the fools in society to quit pretending children are adults? (yeah, yeah ... at least the kid lived more by the age 14 than most live in a lifetime! Give me an ever-loving break)

One thing for certain. When parents do this - THEY should be on the hook for rescue costs. She isn't possibly a qualified sailor. Negligence should have consequences for the guardians.

"She isn't possibly a qualified sailor."

Rent a boat and run out to give her a sailing test. Report back here with your results. Otherwise, what you say has no basis at all.
02:20 AM on 08/22/2010
Don't have to. Qualifications require experience, experience requires time invested. At her age it is not physically possible for her to have invested the time required to achieve the requisite experience.

It is not physically possible.

Did anybody notice the line that said MasMedia has exclusive rights to film her voyage? It does not sound like this young woman is really alone on the high seas, but that there will be a second boat nearby for at least parts of the trip. Also, it is not actually one trip around the world, but a series of trips and may even be interrupted for a trip back home to resume her formal education.
02:03 AM on 08/22/2010
Well, that explains why her manager froze out all the other media (and explains why she has a manager).
