I'll keep saying it until I have no more breath:..The ONLY WAY to get the Roman Catholic Churches attention is for people all over the world to STOP GIVING THE CHURCH MONIES

It's more efficient to extract money in effective lawsuits than to avoid giving it in weekly church-bound graft.

Just stopping funding the organization won't do it. It is necessary but not sufficient. They have a huge amount of money banked already.

Of course, anyone with a conscience would stop funding, but then anyone with a conscience would also stop associating with this organization.

Christians get mad when they have to stay let's say 100 feet away from an abortion clinic to prevent them from literally screaming in the ear of women who want to exercise their legal right to an abortion.

The vatican gets mad when victims of pedophile priests want to peacefully protest about the ILLEGAL and IMMORAL acts of priests that massively go unpunished.

Doesn't that prove once again that morality does not originate in religion?

If these abuses were done by any other institutions but the religious ones, the prosecutors would have left no stone unturned. But for some reasons these abuses were tolerated and swept under the rug. Just goes to show you more evil has been done in the name of religion than any other.
And I said before, those that continue supporting the Catholic churches are guilty by association

This may be a good thing for the Church - as long as the protesters stay unaggressive and respectful - the Church will be forced to look at its self, how it operates, and how it can repair the damage done.

You seem to forget that mainstream society and science also had trouble dealing with these horrible offenders in the past. It was thought that the abusers could be "cured."

Thinking you can cure them is atleast an acknowledgment of what they did. Keeping the victims silent and simply transferring the culprits somewhere far away does nothing but show complicity.

'Vatican spokesperson Father Federico Lombardi met the crowd this morning, only to retreat when protesters yelled "Shame on you!"'

Wow, he's pretty thin-skinned for a supposed spokesperson....

So Father Lombardi comes out to meet the crowd, but he is thin skinned when the crowed refuses to engage in dialog with him? What would have been acceptable behavior on Father Lombardi's part?

He could slither off to the archives, find a suitcaseful of incriminating documents and hand them over to the protesters to advance their various cases, but no - just as expected he whines about how these ungodly people are being rude to him and retires back inside his walls where his co-conspirators give him a hug and tell him how beastly is the secular world (on whose dime he feasts and pays for his luxurious robes).

He should be ashamed of himself. He's speaking for a man who protected pedophiles and put the welfare of the Church above the welfare of children.

Part of a blathering from NY'er:

'Sadly a handful of the many thousands of good priests and bishops succumbed to evil, but it was never the church or its leadership that caused this. It was as always evil, and its relentless attack on the church. The good news is that the attacks increase in ferocity because satan knows his time grows short.'

May we remind you, NYer, that it was the church and its leadership who kept this all quiet for decades? Moved priests from one unsuspecting community to another after their pedophilia was discovered? Did nothing to help the poor, damaged children that their actions had created?

All I can say is that I didn't realize the tro//s lurked around articles like this.

Not only is the Catholic Church the premier abuser of children, but they also enabled fascism in Germany to the same extent that the Bush administration was enabled by evangelical fundamentalism.

The rates of abuse are higher in the US among protestant ministers, teachers, and youth coaches. The RC is just the biggest organization. It is like saying WalMart is the accepter of conterfiet currency. They get more conterfiet money because they get more money.

I really can't understand how so many Catholics continue to attend mass and drop money in that collection plate. The Pope has never done anything to actually stop this kind of thing from happening in the future. All his apologies have been half hearted but most importantly he has made no serious efforts at reform, to change the way reports of abuse will be handled in the future. Without that all Catholics are guilty IMO from this point forward. They can't say they didn't know, they are contributing to a criminal enterprise as much as someone who buys drugs from organized crime. But at least addicts don't claim to do what they do in the name of peace, love, and morality.

I agree with your post.
At some point parents should be held accountable for placing their children in danger.

Have a great day.

You are very ignorant of current policy regarding interaction with youth in the catholic church. The policy is nationwide in the U.S., and has been left to the council of Bishops in each country to set up. Volunteering (same procedure for all with interaction) was a much more stringant procedure than any other youth organization I've ever been through. The local cheif of police (who is NOT catholic) is on the council that reviews procedures and compliance here in Utah. Please educate yourself before you make statements that are not true.

08:37 AM on 11/01/2010
Tucsoncindy - the Pope is not a coward. He bravely fights off justice and truth and has done so for virtually all of his profitable career in the RC church. BP doesn't step forward and say: You"re right. We have destroyed the environment and we intend to keep on doing so since if we don't BP will make less money." Well the Pope represents the Vatican Inc. and he doees his best to make it seem a do good, honest outfit just like BP does the same for BP.
