Why the mandated mercury light bulbs? How many of these light bulbs are going to be disposed of properly? How much mercury will be leeched into our ground water? How many people are going to perform a proper hazardous waste clean up when these bulbs break? We are exchanging a reduction of CO2's for an increase in mercury.

Nothing would be green without CO2's.

without H20-life would not exist.......but you can still drown! Worried about the tiny amt. of mercury in light bulbs -dispose of properly!... mercury from coal fired elec. plants- quit breathing??

Let me guess. Obama must've negotiated another 'compromise' with the GOP.
01:52 PM on 12/09/2010
Nobody wants rivers that catch fire and the like. But the EPA under Obama has gotten a little overboard with a few of their ideas, among other things suggesting the dust from combines might be regulated. I know this site abhors the thought of profit, but without profit there usually isn't any money to pay wages, or taxes. I think the pool of conservatives that care absolutely nothing about the environment is pretty small. I also think the pool of far left environmentalists that have ever actually run a business that produces anything is very small.

Polarization will kill this country quicker than climate change or terrorism. The inability to see an issue from any other point of view other than your own keeps us at each others throats. Undoubtedly, I will get a reply that I don't want the dust regulated from my combine because of profit. Bingo. Profit is my paycheck. If my profit margin was 25% or better, that might be a different story. It's easy if you aren't in a business that produces essentials like food or energy to squall about how we do what we do, but the consumers generally squall about every tiny increase in what we produce, so, the door does swing both ways as far as "profit" goes. Very few people in this nation subsist on love and good intentions, most of us need money to survive.
01:55 AM on 12/10/2010
Sorry,I am all for profit-however turning your fields into a mini dust bowl is not a smart move if you want to farm over the long haul.....planning on going into hydroponics when the land blows away?
I do think farmers should get a larger share in the price we pay at the store and really support keeping our farmers on the land. ( I like eating!)
You don't say what you grow. Can you change some of your practices to min. dust? This should be a problem to be solved not a matter of sides trying to bully each other.
08:26 AM on 12/10/2010
You might want to study farming practices a little more. The dust from a combine is not creating a mini dust bowl. In order for a combine to work, the crop must be dry. Combine dust is chaff and the like off of a ripened crop. I am sure there is some type of $50000 device we could install that would spray water and try to cut the dust, but I don't have an extra $50000. Our air quality is head and shoulders above that in any city, and the dust from the combine generally settles back down into the field you are combining.

Regulatory overreach is what makes people who produce things for a living vote GOP. It isn't that we are anti environment, it is more we are anti going broke, and the EPA is definitely anti business, and anti farming. I am sure eventually they will manage to push most production of nearly anything out of this nation. When everyone is sitting around looking at a 25% unemployment rate, imported food, and no tax base to support social programs they will wish the left hadn't been so anti business, but of course by then it will be too late to do anything about it.
08:28 AM on 12/10/2010
I realize I came off a little snarky, your overall attitude of trying to get along with farmers is something I really like, didn't mean to be mean!!

"Exposure to tobacco smoke – even occasional smoking or secondhand smoke – causes immediate damage to your body that can lead to serious illness or death, according to a report released today by U.S. Surgeon General Regina M".

This is the same government that is telling us that CO2's are going to kill us.

Quick fork over your money to the ruling class so they can save us from the weather.”

How about you put a plastic bag over your head to prove how safe CO2 is.
06:01 PM on 12/09/2010
I get that you don't agree with Letsgosteve's (proper)allegation of purposely induced hysteria. But surely you aren't so foolish to deem CO2 some sort of poison gas?
I mean it has a rather impressive track record of making things grow.

I would consider myself a conservative. And yes, or course I want to drink dirty water and breathe smog in the air. What hog wash!

If you want clean water and air, support environmental policy. If not, support deregulation like the majority of conservative politicians.
12:55 PM on 12/09/2010
Certainly it's always better to pollute our environment if the wealthy investors make money in the process. It's the 'Murican way, according to the Fox junkies.

I also love to take a big dump on the kitchen counter, especially when everyone is preparing a meal, when I come home to visit my family during the Holidays. Sometimes I'll even vomit right into the gravy. Makes me feel all warm and happy.

Of course they are nervous.

The GOP would like to do away with the complete agency.

I remember those days well. Rivers caught fire, air was unbreathable, entire neighborhoods had virtually every child born with birth defects or cancers. Everything and everybody in the Pittsburgh area was covered with black soot every day. Good times.

I suggest you move to Somalia or some other anarchist country.
02:15 PM on 12/09/2010
I'm pretty old and I don't remember those times besides people are more educated about the dangers now.

I am completely sick and tired of the Democrats caving to the GOP. Enough with the politics and let's do what's right to protect people before profits. Let's do what's right for future generations and protect the environment NOW!

Why does imposing limits cause job lose - by requiring controls more jobs will be created to develop and maintain the technical and mechanical system to prevent the polution - jobs were lost when Bush came into office because by removing the limits companies said forget it to making changes.

And manufacturers/ polluters have all sorts government assistance with these improvements as well.

They probably don't cause any losses in jobs whatsoever.

It's just the standard programmed responses from certain groups.

Jobs are a cost, therefore, unproductive jobs spent on regulatory compliance are nothing to get excited about. And BTW, some manufacturers will find it cheaper to shut down rather than comply with the regulations.
02:16 AM on 12/10/2010
most business people like making money-- how do you make money if you shut down??
A lot of the regs. are cost effective even if they cost money up front--and I worked 25 yrs. for a large organic chem. co.---we reduced pollution by 80% (over 10 yrs.) with new, better scrubbers, capturing waste heat etc. and SAVED money.
