I'd like to see the reception he gets next month when he marches in the St.Patrick's Day parade.

The real question is this: How inebriated was Bloomburg? Or was he on some other mind altering substance?

I'm still more hung up on his latest Chancellor's gaffes re "birth control" and "Sophie's Choice."

Then again, I'm not Irish.

P.S. Chris Quinn NOT coddling the Mayor? Now THAT's news!

My people have a saying: "God created alcohol to keep the Irish from ruling the world."
=From the tone of your comment, it sounds like it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to have a drink and lighten up a bit.

I don't drink alcohol. Never have, never will. Don't need any kind of drugs to lighten up. Ironically, I'm the one saying people should lighten up.

Or any Irish person making a truthful joke about a penny pinching, Jewish mayor who's putting the squeeze on the middle class and poor of NYC.

I'll be thinking of this comment the next time I see thousands of Irish-Americans drinking, fighting, vomiting and generally making a nuisance of themselves this St. Patrick's Day.
06:20 PM on 02/10/2011
I am 100% Irish and I'm not remotely offended by this comment. Let's lighten-up folks... we're just grasping at straws at this point...

I suppose it's a bit like the "N-word"; it depends on whose saying it. I would never make a joke against Jewish people, but I sometimes refer to some of "my people," when they deserve it, as
"thick Micks."

How about "Shanty Irish"? ;-) It really doesn't matter what we Irishmen call each other(and many times it's 4 letter words). However, Mr. Bloomberg IS the mayor, he really should know better...

Very surprising comment in light of this report in a NY Times profile of Bloomberg written shortly after he was first elected mayor:

"Mrs. Bloomberg said her son became sensitive to prejudice at a young age. There were not many Jews in their neighborhood, and the only way his father was able to buy their house in 1945 was to have an Irish lawyer purchase it first and then turn around and sell it to him." http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/26/nyregion/bloomberg-a-man-of-contradictions-but-with-a-single-focus.html?pagewanted=8&src=pm

wonkee:
I don't think the mayor meant any harm. It's more like what the commentator said above:
Bloomberg is a bit "tone-deaf."
=Ironically, my Irish grandparents always made a point of recalling that when they arrived in America, they were confronted with Help Wanted signs that contained the phrase "No Irish Need Apply."
=Just about every ethnic group in this country has suffered prejudice at some point. I like to think that's makes us proud Americans--we don't like to be pushed around, and we'll fight
bias and mistreatment of others with the same vigor we would use to defend ourselves.
=God bless our "nation of immigrants"!

Pls don't make excuses for Mayor Blunderberg. His comments and actions create harm daily. He knows what he's doing and doesn't care who he hurts in the process.

Not good at all, but he did apologize. I urge my fellow Americans of Irish ancestry to reject this stereotype themselves and take some pride in the contributions that Irish people and Irish-Americans have made. St. Patrick's Day in New York is the worst way to experience these contributions. The prospect of witnessing people vomiting on the streets while proclaiming 'kiss me I'm Irish' makes me want to steer clear. What other group denigrates themselves like this? People will be more sensitive when we stop making idiots out of ourselves and we decide to have a little dignity.
