Much of rural FL is like that as well. There is a giant confederate flag near lake City on I-10 and one on I-75 near Tampa. Not surprised.

I grew up in the South, was glad to be living in the west, Arizona, until the racists took over the government here. Now it is just as bad, or worst than the south.

How much money does its almost all black football team bring in? Modern slavery. Back in the 1960s almost every black professional football player came from Grambling, Florida A&M or some other black school. Short-sightedly, black athletes started going to LSU, Florida State, Alabama, etc., which enriched those institutions on their backs, while black institutions floundered financially. (Just like black athletes' defection to the Major Leagues condemned the Negro Leagues to death.) Now see how the southern universities repay them.
12:44 PM on 02/18/2011
Black college athletes are paid the same way as whites, a scholarship and the chance to go pro. Some would argue it's a raw deal, but it's not one unique to black athletes.

The major problem in this country is white supremacy and white privilege. It is more pronounced because of hard economic times. The idea that you can get a bigger and better piece of the pie is very appealing to bigoted white folks.

The problem with Red Staters is they think "progress" is an endpoint.

That's why the slave states said "oh we're fine now" about ending court enforcement of desegregated schools, so the courts bought their load of carp, and now the slave states are resegregating their schools.

Right, progress never ends. Today is never enough.

Until, men, women, people of all colors, people of all sexuality, people of all abilities are treated equitably and can have what is promised them by our form of government.

FF'd! :)

progressives will never stop playing the race card. White America elected a bi-racial president and it still isn't good enpugh. If you have your own opinion, you're a racist.

Racism is a live and well in rural areas of wisconsin and Michigan. Hillgillies who flee the police in the south run north and end right before the horror of socialist Canada, you see.

I know people who are moving to southern states due to the cheaper cost of living. They are willing to tolerate the racism because their money will stretch farther when it comes to living expenses.

I attended UAB and live in Birmingham. It's so sad that younger generations have had these prejudices ingrained in them. I'm not as shocked when an older person says something out of line. But when it's someone my age...geeze. They should know better.

I'm guessing I'm older than you, but you're right, from us older folks, raised in another time as it were, racist comments and ideas can be reasonably expected, but don't worry, there are a great many people in your generation that simply, like you, do know better.

another poster here implied that after obama's election, there's no racism anymore, but we both know better, and it's up to younger people like yourself, to add to the gains our ancestors fought for-and keep in mind, i mean they literally fought and died for these civil rights gains. and I have every confidence that you will-keep speaking up, and encourage your friends and acquaintances to do so--every single voice is still required.

I was born and raised in the South and although some states have made progress, there is no room to be proud. I the case of THIS very backward and bigoted State.. there has been NONE to speak of. Sure they put on a good show for "outsiders" but there really isn't much difference.

The problem in the USA is the tendency to treat racists with kid gloves. Only when they commit 'serious' crimes, like murder, do they get their comeuppance. In the case of the UA fraternities I challenge them to publicize their punishment of their erring members. It is in the public interest to know if the punishment is appropriate. For racist actions these frathernity (or sorority) members should be expelled from their organizations and the latter denounce and disown their member's actions in clear, straightforward terms.

In Germany the display of the Nazi swastika is banned, but in the US, the Confederate flag, which symbolizes the same racist affiliation, is displayed in some states. Although the Holocaust is relatively recent, Germany has made bigger strides in stamping out its racist past than the US more than 200 years after the Civil War. Furthermore, contemporary German history textbooks explicitly show that it was Hitler and his Nazis who were responsible for the start and the horrors of World War II in Europe. In the US, there are attempts, like in Texas, to sanitize the past. Shame.

Exactly.

Another problem is that after WW2, most of Europe purged any kind of Fasicm out of their governments... but instead, the white supremacists put ex-Nazis in charge, and had them fight the boogeyman of "communism".
12:49 PM on 02/18/2011
There is no such thing as communism or socialism in the modern western European society today. The big three, Germany, UK and France have a very stable and successful (and capitalistic) Democracy that puts the US to shame when compared. I lived in Germany for a longer time and they did stamp out the Nazi ideology of the past. They have the biggest economy and are very successful and even conservatives have quite liberal views sometimes. (for example the German cons believe that education is very important and that it shouldn't get any budget cuts and yes they also decreased the size of their army). It says a lot that the number of racists in the US is about a 100 (!) times higher than in Germany... and THEY had a racist government more than 65 years ago! Not the US!! That should make you question our freedom of speech and if it really is okay to hate on ethnic minorities in public. You should start to wonder if it is really okay how O'Reilly, Beck and Limbaugh can simply spew all this subliminal racism. This kind of racist behaviour is not without consequences for our country!

You got it!

We need to put daylight on these racists and bigots (against GLBTIQ people), too. And frankly, while racist, bigoted and hateful speech is covered under the First Amendment, we can push back against them without silencing them. We push back by showing them with their words and actions to the general public -- in effect giving them more of a stage temporarily and showing the silent majority who these people are. And the social sanction will start to work.

At one point, we DO need to deal constitutionally with racism and targeted bigotry.

This photo which accompanies the story seems to indicate a rural (read Backwards) mentality. It may be true but does not represent ALL Alabamans - I hope.

I hope more intelligent Bamans speak up before they are overrun by the racists and bigots who have controlled the state since its inception.

The ONLY other alternative is for smarter residents to leave the state and let them secede and fend for themselves.

No, that's stupid. Just stupid. If you want to bear witness against stereotypes, don't be one yourself. Instead, show people or case studies of the rural people you wish to defend and show how they are NOT what the writer above says they are. Right?

I am a Northerner of immigrant heritage from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. OK? Chicagoland is my city. And it is one of the most diverse cities in the USA. The most Latino in the northern Midwest and the most African American, also. In addition it has more people of Polish origin than there are living now in Warsaw, Poland. And in all groups, there are good people, bigoted people and silent people who really don't know what to say.

But when you sit with someone at dinner, share food, drink and conversation, you gain a perspective you can't have in a forum like this or in a car on a busy street.

While some people are comfortable with their backwards ways, they can be open to change under the right circumstances. Some come forward a lot, others only a little.

We have to have room for variable progress, too, and even a bit of backsliding.

But while we can burlesque certain stick-in-the-mud attitudes, as a way gain certain people's attention, the goal is to educate, move forward and move in step together.
