Which "god"? Thor? Zeus? Dionysus? Allah? Targitzan? Neptune?

You speak of your "god" as if there are facts in evidence for it. There are not.

The evidence for the existence of Yahweh is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The evidence for the Resurrection is that the tomb is empty, His enemies couldn't produce the body, and the Apostles, who knew whether or not they were telling the truth, endured torture unto death without a single one of them recanting their claim that they had personally seen Jesus arisen from the dead.

It is refreshing to have a day of happiness and good news amid all the gloom which is usually our news fare. The negative commenters here remind me of a story:

"A Native American grandfather talking to his young grandson tells the boy
he has two wolves inside of him struggling with each other.
The first is the wolf of peace, love and kindness.
The other wolf is fear, greed and hatred.
"Which wolf will win, grandfather?" asks the young boy.
"Whichever one I feed," is the reply."

The Anglican saying is; "A sacrament is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.." All of us, including atheists like me, could use more grace and less clumsiness in our lives. Will and Kate fed my good wolf today and helped me be more graceful. Thanks to them and peace to all people of good will.

William and Kathryn were happy for the last 8 years or so. Getting a marriage certificate will not add to their happiness nor will it subtract from it.
08:49 PM on 04/30/2011
I dunno, getting legally hitched seems to subtract from it (happiness) for some unfathomable reason.

Riots in Bristol were mostly ignored by the British and world media. They certainly were a British story. And the coverage of the 300 dead in the southeast was treated as a secondary story. In fact, the wedding was a scheduled entertainment event. Now if it had not happened that would have been a big story. So much money was invested in the wedding, to sell ads, other things just had to take second place.

"The sacrament of marriage includes the blessing of God's providence."
And which God would that be? There are thousands from which to chose--and most have different agendas and commands. My God, Thor, doesn't care one way or the other if the married couple pays Him homage.
I think you should have included that in your essay, Paul.

The vow For Better or For Worse, should be taken out. No one stays anymore when the worst happens in a marriage. No one.

It the depends what kind "the worst" it is. Many religions believe that married people should stay together even when one of the spouses is abused by the other.

We humans can never venture very far from tribalism, and the royal wedding was a perfect example. The ceremony combined two of tribalism's strongest elements, religion and government, which always have worked hand in glove to control and oppress ordinary people. Indeed, religion probably developed out of tribalistic rituals that celebrated the local strongman and that warrior's considerable influence over the mysterious supernatural forces that controlled the harvest and life and death. Thousands of years have passed, but most humans still feel obliged to meekly seek the permission of tribal leaders to even cohabitate with another person. It's very sad, really. Humankind still has a long way to go on its road to becoming a rational species.

This scripted wedding had nothing worthwhile to commend about the family structure.  It was all about the virtues of aristocracy, rule from the top by inherited wealth.
And Yes.  It was also about entertainment and encouraging the  new poor and millions of unemployed to forget their permanent plight.

It is always funny to see Christians argue that marriage is sacred.  Read the bible.  Paul advised against it.

The two are not contradictory. Paul said that sex and marriage were sacred, but that chaste and celibate service to God was a higher calling than marriage. Paul advised against marriage for those that could endure singleness, but he actively encouraged those who couldn't endure singleness to get married and have as much sex as their spouses need.

Marriage is not a sacrament you heretic.   There are only two sacraments for real Christians, baptism and communion.  You are exposing yourself as a closeted papist.  Who knows what other evil lurks in your heart.
10:37 AM on 04/30/2011
Oh good grief with your "real" anything as if you were the sole arbiter of "real".
"real" christians support genocide - as described in the Bible.
If not - then why walk around and "swear" on a book with the words "kill the women, children, even the goats and sheep?"

Ya da ya...

If by Sacramental you mean a sacred rite, then all sacred rites are sacramental. But the only two "Gospel Sacraments" recognized as such by the Anglican Church are baptism and holy communion. That marriage is a sacred rite for Anglicans but not a Gospel Sacrament should perhaps have been made clear.

Otherwise, good article.

"Sacrament" means covenant oath. It was not instituted in the Gospels because it was already in existence since Genesis.

I'm pretty sure that if they were allowed to be honest, neither Prince William nor Kate Middleton believe in god or attend church on a regular basis. Harry...for sure not.

It's just a lot of words. It kind of ruined the moment actually.

When I look around our country today, downloaded into Orwellian corporate fascism, perhaps it would be better if we had a monarchy. Say what you want about the English, they usually had some kind of rational plans for their colonies. All I see around us today is political, economic, and cultural devourment.
10:51 AM on 04/30/2011
Democracy has moved the world forward - it has even moved the monarchies forward because they are forced to compete for adherents.

You see what you choose to see.

Wow, you can't be happy for two people you don't even know. And why throw race into, what does that have to do with wishing a high profile couple well? We can only be happy for non-whites?
