Note to GOP: None of the 10 fastest growing industries were the Oil industry. If you want to start creating jobs how about supporting the businesses that can help this country grow?

I am not surprised about prisons being on the top ten of the fastest growing industries. When poverty increases, crimes increase. I am just surprised that the adult industry is not on the list. Maybe some of it is under the table or the revenue isn't being claimed?
07:35 PM on 05/18/2011
Actually crime is down dramatically and has been dropping since 1990.

notice they use the word growing but not the word profitable. About 80% of this list is govt subsidy businesses.

oil is STILL subsidied, and is massively profitable.. you obviously know one's not necessarily antithesis to the other
07:37 PM on 05/18/2011
Renewables (a very loose term,as it also includes Ethanol) is subsidized at a 24% rate, oil is at 4%. Agriculture is around 17%.

#6: Correctional Facilities

Ha. Correctional Facilities will get very close to #1 if Obama wins another term. The wacky right-wing that has a hissy fit whenever Obama does anything, will come unglued during another term and at least half them will be put in mental institutions, and the other half will swing into action, with full support from the Tea Partiers, and go on a rampage. Seriously, the right is emotionally unstable because they are so fear based. And that is a scientific fact.

I would agree, except for the fact that correctional facilities are growing. That's not a very good thing at all, it's a sign that something is going terribly wrong.

I can agree on correctional facilities too. People need to think on paying for more educations services instead.

I'm supposed to be impressed by a fastest growing industry by PERCENTAGE increase list? I just bought a candy bar for 50 cents and sold it for a dollar. That's 100% growth in my candy bar sales business! Can I be on the list now?
02:14 PM on 05/18/2011
No, this sounds more like an investment banker. Because either the one willing to buy it was desperately hungry and so had to pay for food - something on which you speculated or you deceived him/her on the real worth of the food-backed-security you sold ;) *just kidding*

Sure. If you're the only person or business in the country that sells candy bars, then you'd be at the top of the list. But, there are other sellers of candy bars, and they bring down the growth statistics to the point where candy bars aren't a growing industry.

Prisons should not be privately owned and run for profit. It creates disincentives and conflicts of interest. How many baggers complain about public unions, who endorse and then campaign for candidates that will be negotiating their next contract, as having a conflict of interest? Well why don't you say the same about private prisons? They donate and campaign for candidates who will write more laws to lock people up, and who will funnel taxpayer money to their prisons. These prisons have no incentive to rehabiliate prisoners into law abiding citizens because they make more money on repeat offenders.

Business is booming: http://www.prisonstudies.org/info/worldbrief/wpb_stats.php?area=all&category=wb_poptotal

It's pretty bad when we not only lead the world in prison population, but nearly DOUBLE communist China's prison population, a country with FOUR TIMES our population.

Pretty soon our economy will consist of locking up half the population and paying the other half to watch them.
