I've only tried the Xoom and iPad 2 and the Xoom trounces the iPad. The iPad was sluggish responding, links often didn't respond to touch input, and most of the apps were made for the iPhone and the graphics on a 10" display vs a 3.5" display look pretty bad (which are also comments I heard from iPad users as well). I couldn't find an app that looked bad on a Xoom, and the screen has higher resolution as well. Finally you get better spec'd hardware with more features for the same money. I don't know how the other "pads" stack up as I haven't tried them but if I had to pick between the iPad and Xoom now it would be the Xoom.

That's the reason I got an Atrix instead of an Iphone 4. I wish the doc they make for it was more reasonably priced. @ $300 with the phone and $400 without, it's way overpriced as I can run my netbook off the Atrix using it's hot spot.

Seriously? Most of the apps are just made for the iPhone.

The selection of iPad specific apps TROUNCES Android. It is embarrassing at the moment.

MOST apps are made for the iPad as well as the iPhone...

Time has not been kind to the Xoom as even reviewers who gave it decent reviews now make fun of it... It was a beta product that isn't relevant anymore. The Galaxy 10.1 is a very nice tablet, the Xoom is NOT.

the Nook is a tablet?

That was exactly my thought. The writer doesn't know anything about the the devices.
10:40 AM on 06/24/2011
The writer SAID it wasn't a tablet. Can't you read?

With that said, I'm not sure why this particular e-reader was included and not the others, particularly the nook color. I guess because it has a touch screen, which the writer focused on when describing it. But then again, I can read.

I own a Nook and it is like a tablet... now.
When I bought the Nook it was just an e-reader, but I had read that I could get an OS to jail-break it into a tablet. Then I read that B&N would be releasing it's own OS so that I didn't have to void the warrenty. I waited 2 months and B&N updated the OS on the Nook Color.

I can still read books on it, but now I also have Pandora, Angry Birds (in HD), Quick Office Pro (word, spread sheet, power point, PDF reader), Chess, Crossword, Sudoku, Calender, etc.

It's got wi-fi and I can even get my e-mail on it!

I've had it for about 6 months and I love it.

Also forgot to say that my Nook Color has a Micro-SD card slot.
And the covers for the Nook are really nice.

YA-VOLT MINE COMP-U-DANT!
:::::Arm stiff extended in salute:::::::

Just because YOU say it's not a tablet; it isn't?

Let's see...
Color screen? Check!
Touch screen? Check!
Wi-Fi? Check!
Apps? Check!

~ What does my Color-Nook do that a tablet doesn't do??

Best bet is to go to B&N and check it out for yourself.

I own the Asus Transformer and it is a fantastic little device! A big plus is that I didn't have to buy a data plan to use it... picked up the wifi-locator and I am pretty much good to go anywhere.. and if I am REALLY desperate, I can turn my HTC Thunderbolt into a mobile hotspot and it is good to go.

My wife has the Nook Color and LOVES IT, although it isn't as versatile as the Asus, but for basic browsing and playing some games/reading, it does the job at less than 1/2 the cost without the need for a data plan.

I can't figure out why anyone would buy and IPAD, given the high price tag and restrictive programming.

I have an iPad (1) and eschewed the iPad 2 in favour of the transformer and I'm really glad I did because the iPad seems so restrictive in comparison.  The iPad with its hundreds of excellent gaming apps which are sadly lacking on Android (get your act together please Android) has become an excellent gaming machine.

As these tablets become more popular, the developers will pick up the android market.

interesting.
A platform that seems 'restrictive' actually gave you more choices for apps.
Could you explain the paradox?

I've never put much stock with tablets, but I will say this, if I was in the market right now shopping for a tablet it would be an ipad.

I have an android phone completely enthralled with it, I thoroughly dislike iphones, but tablets are a different beast altogether. The natively installed apps do not suffice for tablet use (especially in productivity terms) and android apps have yet to fully cover that gap.

I agree. I have an Android phone and an iPad and I enjoy both of them.

I probably will go Android for a tablet in a few years, but it's way too early now.

In terms of sheer horsepower there are tablets out there that trump the ipad without question (see EEE pad and Xoom) but having all that horse power without the apps that use it is a waste.

This is insane. Two (at least) of the devices are currently vaporware - the HP webos tab and the Huawei MediaPad.

The BN simple touch reader is very nice, but why doesn't the article mention the Nook Color, which is available, half the price of the cheapest iPad, and actually is a tablet?

they need to reduce their price most of these android devices have the same price tag as an apple Ipad 499.99. So if they are serious about taking current or potential customers away from Apple. they( Samsung, HP, Asus, Motorola) have to do much better than that I'm sorry last time I check I can use many features that google has to offer on my Ipad.

An Asus Transformer lists at $399. For another $150 (list) you can add a a docking station that gives you a keyboard with extra battery & more ports and turn it into an Android netbook. Love my Asus.

I believe the Acer Iconia lists for $450; still cheaper than the iPad.

Just my stubbron old prejudice against Apple that goes way back to when they killed Commodore Computers by stealing their chip to attempting to (as they still do today) force anyone that buys apple prodicts to only buy software and hardware from Apple I won't own anything made by Apple. Add to that the unanswered question of where Steve Jobs got a new liver when there were so many on the list ahead of him and that only adds to the problem. That all said I have tested a few replacements for the Ipad and have found that many of them are as good or better than anything Apple has, look around and you can find many such products for a lower price and won't tie you to extreme Apple costs!

When you have billions you go to the head of the line "even" here in the good old USA. But consider how many people depend on him for employment. It will be interesting to see what becomes of Apple when Mr. Jobs is gone.

It took me awhile to get it, but I love my Asus Transformer. I got a 1st gen iPad for my girlfriend and of the 2 I prefer the Transformer. You would think for the relative low price of $399 it would skimp, but it has great components. I still think Honycomb needs to mature but I'll take the openness of Google's mobile OS any day over Apple's dictatorship.

They forgot an awesome tablet that is about to come out. The Acer Iconia 7" A100 & A101 tablets, are about to launch and have been seen in some Walmarts already. They are coming in at $349.00 for the WiFi only version.
