Nuclear safety chief concerned about unchecked plants

Haruki Madarame, chairman of the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan, questioned on July 11 the continued operation of reactors at two Japanese nuclear power plants that have not been subjected to the safety checks normally required before re-entering service.

Inherited mutations resulting from exposure of the sperm or oocytes is a "stochastic" or a probability phenomenon (as is cancer). The outcome is either a yes or a no, and there is no threshold of dose below which ionizing radiation cannot produce mutations. The types of inherited mutations due to exposure of a large number of persons to ionizing radiation will be the same as naturally occur in the population.

At low doses and dose rates, the risk of mutation is VERY low - it is lower for low dose radiation at all doses. The relationship may be either linear or linear-quadratic, depending on the type of radiation (e.g. gamma rays result in linear quadratic increase - at low doses the relationship is linear with increasing dose, while at higher doses, the relationship is dependent on the dose squared.

Cancer resulting from exposure of cells of ionizing radiation is a stochastic or probability phenomenon. The outcome is either yes or no, and there is a threshold of dose below which ionizing radiation cannot induce cancer, according to some scientists. The types of cancers due to exposure of a large number of persons to ionizing radiation include both blood cancers and solid tumors. The relationship may be either linear or linear-quadratic, depending on the type of cancer (e.g., for blood cancers, the incidence increases in a linear quadratic manner with dose, while for solid tumors, the increase is linear with dose, and fractionalization does not increase risk.

A careful and thorough explanation.

Just one thing.

Tr...s are always throwing around the word "stochastic."

"Stochastic" translated into English means "some people are going to die from radiation sickness."

No perfessor, "stochastic" means "statistical". Stochastic studies can determine the cancer rate for a given exposure without any knowledge of how that cancer is caused. Deterministic studies are concerned with how radiation causes cancer.

The main and most important molecule within the cell, with respect to ionizing radiation damage either through a direct interaction ('hit") or the indirect effect of free radical generation, are the DNA MOLECULES in the nucleus.

The types of damage to the DNA include:

DNA single strand breaks

DNA double strand breaks

Sugar damage

Base damage

Local denaturation (separation of the two strands)

DNA-DNA cross-links

DNA-protein cross-links

These damages lead to a slowdown in the synthesizing copies of its DNA, so there is a delay in one cell dividing into two cells.

Delays (to allow repairs( as the cell progresses towards its next cell proliferation (increase in cell number) of a population of cells.

Death of the cell

Mutation of the cell

Changes in the cell which make it cancer-like (called cell transformation).

If there is DNA damage for any reason, the best result is that cell dies, called apoptosis.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hyla-cass-md/radiation-risks-and-prote_b_836363.html

"Other supplements that may be protective are: vitamin D and vitamin K as they support appropriate apoptosis, which is programmed death of cells that accumulate various DNA errors (due to radiation and other causes), and vitamin D also supports DNA repair."

While a persons susceptibility to cancer is somewhat a matter of chance, the odds can be gamed a bit by the right nutrition. At my next physical, I think I'm going to have Vitamin D tested. I don't want too much, or too little. I don't want "minimal", I want "optimum".

Try elagic acid in Meeker raspberry seeds. Studies many years ago found that there was evidence of DNA repair with elagic acide that might help prevent cancer. Medical claims cannot be made by physicians until there is FDA approval. My oncologist participated in these studies as did another physician who is a relative of mine. I did not even knowe the guy until my oncologist introduced us.

The key is prevention with these supplements. Avoidance of exposure is not always possible but should be attempted.

I take vitamin D, K, and chelating agents such as Magnesium along with Alpha Lipoic acid.

Damage to the DNA is either direct, or throught the indirect action of free radicals.

Cell killing, mutation, or cancer are all dose dependent, whether the source is internal or external.

Cell killing has a measurable threshold, and the extent of cell killing increases with increasing dose (deterministic effect).

It is the risk of inherited mutation of cancer that increases with dose, and that increase with dose, and that these all or none events will occur to some (but not everyone) in the exposed population as the dose to the population increases."

Fully differentiated, functional and non-dividing cells (e.g. nerve cells, muscle cells) are radioresistant.

Partially differentiated cells that can be called upon to divide again (e.g. liver cells, glandular cells) are somewhat less radioresistant.

Cells which can divide but lend support to other cells in a tissue (e.g. endothelial cells lining the blood vessels, fibroblasts of the connective tissue) are intermediate in radiosensitivity.

Dividing cells which start to diufferentiate (e.g., myelocytes, spermatocytes) are fairly radiosensitive.

Continuously dividing stem cells (such as found in the bone marrow, the intestine, the skin, and the testes are VERY radiosensitive. If not killed, these stem cells can rapidly allow the tissue and organ to recover.

Two cell types not in the last category, but which are VERY radiosensitive, are the oocyte and the small lymphocyte (whose death will have immediate negative impact on the immune system).

Over 100 involved in Kyushu Power's e-mail scam

Over 100 people are now thought to have been involved in a scam by the operator of the Genkai nuclear power plant to get its reactors turned back on.

Kyushu Electric Power Company is under fire after its executives told about 50 subordinates at its head office and affiliates to send supportive e-mails and faxes to a meeting hosted by the government.

The meeting was called to explain safety measures before restarting the Number 2 and 3 reactors of the Genkai plant in Saga prefecture.

On Tuesday, it was found that workers at a company branch in Saga were also told to send messages to the meeting, bringing the total involved to over 100.

That accounts for more than 30 percent of the opinions at the meeting that were in favor of restarting the reactors.

Kyushu Electric warns that the number may increase further and says it will submit a report of its investigation to the government by the end of the week.

Operators of 2 reactors to apply for final tests

Two Japanese power companies are expected to apply to the country's nuclear regulator for final tests of their reactors. This follows criticism that they have been running the reactors on a trial basis for too long.

The trial runs usually last for about a month in the final phase of regular checkups by the Nuclear Industry and Safety Agency before commercial operations are resumed with the consent of local communities.

However, the 2 reactors have been undergoing trial runs for 4 months since regular checkups effectively ended after the March 11th disaster in eastern Japan.
One is the Number 3 reactor at the nuclear plant in Tomari Village in Hokkaido, operated by Hokkaido Electric Power Company. The other is the Number 1 reactor at the plant in Oi Town in Fukui Prefecture, run by Kansai Electric Power Company.
The chairman of the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan, Haruki Madarame, said on Monday that this is clearly not a good thing. He urged the Nuclear Industry and Safety Agency to do something about it.

A spokesman for the agency, Yoshinori Moriyama, said if such a trial operation is prolonged without just reason, it may infringe on a law. He said the agency will conduct final tests for the reactors immediately after receiving applications from their operators.

Radioactive beef already sold, eaten
Fukushima meat sent to nine prefectures

The meat of six cows shipped from a Fukushima Prefecture farm at the heart of growing concerns over radioactive beef has been distributed to at least nine prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka, and some was believed consumed, local government officials said Tuesday.

The cows ate the same straw at a farm in Minamisoma near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant as another 11 cows that were shipped to a Tokyo meat-packing plant and whose meat was found to contain excessive levels of the isotope.

Watch the tr....s quibble and just deny the assertion. Every day there is more and more incontestible news. So much one can't keep up with it. And still, they just stolidly do their job. Capping and capping and capping and capping. All night long after everybody goes to bed. They seem to think that, if they just cap, that makes them right.

More bad nuclear power news than anyone could keep up with.

I imagine they'll just assert that it's all wrong.

Good. Real funny.

Depending on climate and cultivar, peach harvest can occur from late May into August (Northern Hemisphere); harvest from each tree lasts about a week.

So...there you have it folks!! Late May....right around when Fukushima Reactors FAILED. This is bad, bad news!
