I hand out food to the homeless in my area. I make a direct impact on their lives. Once I see their plight resolved I'll move to the next area where I can make direct impact. If everyone did that, well, the world wouldn't be perfect but it would be one hell of a start, eh?

I got a lot of my field nursing experience in rowanda during the 94' dust storms, innocent people need help, money should be no object, I wish I had stayed in the corps, but now its up to ALL of us to love our fellow man, despite the actions of a few warlords that want these downtrodden people to see us as the enemy, we are not, but it is up to US to prove it!

I wonder how many more years will take...,

... before we all realize that we live in one single and lonely planet -- and that we need both to take care of each other and it.

Look on this and know, America, that this is what our country can look like under a system of libertarianism and rightwing conservativism taken to their logical extreme. Libertarians say "they deserve it for not working harder" and righwing conservatives will say "they are too lazy to help themselves why should they steal MY money to feed their children?"

It needed to be said. The major problems in countries like Somalia are lack of education and crushing poverty. The US is a long way from those extremes but we are on a downhill slide to them if we don't wake up.

Nightmarish. The world has more than enough food. It's just not PROFITABLE for food to be moved to these areas. Right? (I'm talking to you, Ayn fans and the Greed Is Good crowd.)

What does that even mean?! Ok, we'll leave Somalia to those who have been there. So what have you done to help them? Because it seems to me that if we left it up to you, you'd do nothing.

Well, there are Al Shabab who have outlawed all foreign aid agencies and tend to kill any Westerner or fellow African who tries to enter.

This is heartbreaking and sad. However, it makes one wonder why the entire continent of Africa seems so unable to tend for itself. We have droughts, etc. here in America but they don't produce such dire effects because we have a good road system, functioning food distribution system, etc. They don't have any of those things in Somalia. What is it that stops them from building those things? I recently met a woman who visited Africa and an entire village rejoiced in her presence because she was there to help them dig a well. Why do gorwn men need an American just out her teens to show them how to dig a well?

Much of eastern and southern Africa is debilitated by disease: malaria, HIV, dysentery, typhoid fever, and others. They lack infrastructure from regional conflicts because of religion and power struggles. They essentially have no modern infrastructure, and few healthy young people to create it. It's the result of unfortunate series of events and a climate that produces deadly pathogens that affect a large number of the population. You can't dig a well if no one knows how to do it, because everyone who went to university was killed by a regional warlord, or your bright young engineers are crippled with disease.

No child deserves to suffer like this. Regardless of what the Somali clans have done to the U.S. in the past, these children deserve help from every country that can afford to send it.

And thank you to Unicef, I will be donating.

Food drops in the short term are all well and good, but this is an ongoing, cyclical tragedy that we’ve all seen time and again. What is the long-term plan? We need to be looking at what can be done to fix the source of the problem.

There are third party websites where you can check the % of your funds for an organization and what they go to. If they spend less than 10% on administrative costs, they are good to send money too. UNICEF is one of the more reliable ones. The highest rating I have seen is OxFam.
