Why not just treat the whalers like Obama treated the Mexican drug gangs, and provide the whalers with boats and spears? After all that was the logic he used when he provided drug gangs with guns to stop violence in Mexico through fast and furious and the Tampa slide. .

As I see it, there are no good excuses for whaling nowadays. The tired excuses given for hunting whales are not valid ones. If I were the one in charge of making national decisions, I would inform any and all whalers and illegal fishing trawlers that they would be sunk on sight.

That is cause your blind and crazy to believe that people should be killed who hunt whales or any other animal for food. I bet you don't believe in the death penalty for someone who kills an actual human.

I never mentioned--not once--about killing people. YOU are the one who deduced that by over reaching. I suppose you would be okay with pirates; after all, they are just trying to put food on their tables. And, just for the record, I am completely against the death penalty as it does nothing to stop the crime from being repeated and can never bring back the victim(s). But you, in your tiny world, think it is fine to slaughter whatever animal, but not human beings. What are you going to eat when all your meat is gone?

Why not go after Japan and the other countries too? OH, I forgot, Japan is a favored nation. If you do not go after all the Whaling nations, leave them all alone.

The real story here is how fat Americans are getting and fears that Icelandic whaling ships will come along and start harpooning our fat butts at the beach this would lead to Russians coming onshore and clubbing our fat little children next.

Please! How stupid. Meat is meat and a man has got to eat. Why bully a great country like Iceland over a few fish. What hair brain Idea will this crazy administration do next?

Just a point of fact: whales are mammals, not fish. They breath air and give birth to live young.

I don't support the U.S. enacting diplomatic sanctions against Iceland for whaling, nor do I believe we have the right to oppose the Japanese whaling industry. Are whales endangered? It is very difficult to estimate the number of whales in the world with any certainty. Are fin whales endangered? Not when you include the number of fin whales in the WORLD. While the number of countries involved in the whaling industry has decreased over the last several decades, something else should be considered. In countries that continue to consume whale meat, the younger generations are falling away from the older traditions, with eating whale meat being one of the traditions younger Japanese, for example, are foregoing. Another point to consider is the use of the whale as a product. Whale products include meat, animal feed (whale meat), fertilizer (whale bone meal) and whale oil, which has myriad uses. Nothing goes to waste. Some activists have decided that whaling is cruel and illegal. But does someone who has nothing to do with the whaling industry have the right to interfere in the free market and an industry where activists just don't like the industry itself? The number of whaling countries has decreased and those countries have drastically cut the number of whales they harvest. Is this not compromise enough?

There are NO good and valid reasons for whaling. The Japanese (and others) use the "research" loophole to take every sea mammal they come across. "Tradition" is always subject to change, and usually is the excuse to keep the most stoobid practices around. Why are you pro-whaling? Do you own a stake in the "industry"?

Fact is that 98% of the whale meat that Japanese whalers collect (for the bogus reason of "research") end up at restaurants in Japan.

Here's a sanction. Sink the whaling ships after the crew and all aboard evacuates it in full.

EVERYTHING this president has done since day #1 is posturing for the next election. He's after the conservationist vote now with NO regard till how much it will cost us. Isn't Michelle showing up at one of those Habitat type home builds for a military vet this week ? Would have been more cost effective for her to keep her butt in DC with her ridicolous entourage and just pay for the whole build. This duo is spending millions and millions of our money on disguised campaigning.

It may surpise republicans that people really care about something other than the almighty dollar. These are issues that concern most americans. Not republicans, but most americans and most humans.

It is unbelievable that countries like Iceland and Japan are so extremely short-sighted and driven by greed on this issue that they are willing to wipe species of animals off the globe.

There is a clear and logical reason for the ban on whaling. These animals are a vital part of the chain of life and the health of the oceans. We have to question the brain function of the leaders of these countries who sign off on this industry.

I'm all for it, but he should go after everyone that is whaling, including the Japanese.

Not our problem, it is an eco-environ granny mammy nanny sisterhood initiative, puting us in the same class as Belgiam which claims international jurisdiction over the entire world, including the USA, which we reject. If we signed this protocul, it was a sop to the above activists. We don't hunt whale anymore and few eat whale products. This initiative should be left to those countries with a dog in the fight. We need not pretend leadership here and we likely need Iceland in lots of ways.
01:41 PM on 07/20/2011
Well, as much as I am in favor of whale conservation, the way this Obama is dissing our long-time friends on this planet, it won't be long before we do not have a friend or ally left in the world. Surely this can be negotiated to a mutually acceptable conclusion without the imposition of sanctions. Perhaps we can send them over a brigade of sashaying, gay sissies to help them clean up this, that or the other thing. You know, like some kind of 'GAY CORPS' or something along those lines like the old Peace Corps. You know how GAYS are always secreaming and carrying on about wanting to 'serve'. And by the way, just who does this US administration think it is that it can tell Iceland not to hunt whales while we allow 'native' or 'first' Americans to harvest whales right here in US waters? Talk about bold-faced HYPOCRISY!
