Great!!! Now these water parks that confine and entrap these magnificent animals into lives of desperation and depression (sometimes to the point where they actually commit suicide) will reap the benefits of this publicity as if they are the benefactors of the entire species. While this particular animal will probably not be able to live a natural life in the wild, lets not forget the perfectly healthy animals these water parks harvest from the annual dolphin slaughters in Japan- which they help support every year!

Could not agree more. Going to sea world is the same as committing animal abuse.

You are right. Let her die to represent all the other dolphins. And heII, kill all the critters in captivity because we sure know how to take care of them in the wild(?). Do you have somewhere else to depress?
06:14 PM on 08/20/2011
RIght? While living in a tank is not the ideal situation for marine animals, aquariums and the like allow poeple the opportunity to see and learn about them up close and realize how wonderful and important they are. This encourages people to be better stewards of the ocean which makes it and the world, a better place for everyone/everything.

Saving a wild animal so you could lock her up for life. Really noble. I wonder what Ric O'Barry would say about this.
05:51 PM on 08/20/2011
you could say the same thing for humans. save a humans life so that they can spend the rest of their life in a wheel chair, on medication, in a mental hospital, in prison, in an old folks home or any other way we are able to save a life but they can never go back to the way their life was before. those are not all bad things but we should give the same treatment to animals. we cant communicate with them so we have no idea what she would have wanted maybe she is happy they saved her and now all she has to do is play all day with her dolphin and human friends and get free meals.

The only good comparison you made is a prison. You should really research dolphins more, watch 'The Cove', read about Sea Shepherd's missions in Taiji or something...

I hope they're not using the same music in the movie as in the clip above.

I hope so :)

Why is intelligence an arbiter of whether or not we should be cruel?

Let this dolphin serve as an example of what these large nets are doing to other creatures of the sea when these fishing vessels grab any and all creatures up in these casting nets and discard them like a bubble gum wrapper.
05:54 PM on 08/20/2011
i heard that the fish count has gone up since the oil spill because people couldnt use those fish. the nets also damage the bottom of the ocean floor destroying fish homes and food. i cant stand watching those crab fishing shows so i just find something else to watch.

Great. But who's idea was the XXXXXXX MUSIC? It drives me CRAZY. Why do we need to fill every second with sound. It's such a beautiful story. Our minds don't need that sentimental crap music.

Because I love animals, I have not eaten anything with eyes for over 20 years. However, this poor little dolphin like 1000s of other marine mammals live in captivity mostly in isolation forced to perform stupid animal tricks to entertain their infantile audience. This is a huge, cruel business under the disguise of science but these poor animals suffer a great deal when the audience goes home. Yes, let us stop all form of animal cruelty but most urgently lets save the 1000s of children dying in Africa because of war, famine, and the Western nations total indifference.

Laughing..... I went through a vegetarian stage when I was younger. My Father would scream as if he was the vegetable I was eating. We had some interesting suppers. :-)

It's wonderful that someone found a way to help this dolphin adjust to its handicap. Now, let's all stand back and watch the pathetic commercialization of this otherwise nice story, so that a handful of folks can make some obscene money.

The injury to this dolphin didn't have to happen.

It would have been better if crab traps were made that didn't injure dolphins -- the same way tuna fishers changed their netting for dolphin-safe tuna.

Most dolphins like Winter simply don't survive to receive prosthetics nor is there likely to be a big rush to provide them if more survived.

I wonder if the dolphin is aware of what happened? Does it think ? Is it self aware? What if other dolphins saw him, what would they say? Would he be cast out as a freak, or welcomed as the first cyborg dolphin? Why can't science figure out a way to make dolphins speak English! Hurry up science! I want to talk to dolphins!

Yes, it thinks. Yes, it's self-aware.

Unless it was faked I thought I recall seeing a video of a dolphin actually saying "Hi" in a squeaky type voice.

But, in general I think science should figure out a way to communicate with them rather than the other way around.

All the sounds a dolphin makes means something in their language.

Humans can learn a different language so why not learn the dolphin language?
