"When a lion has actually made physical contact with a person and in conjunction with that, has killed a domestic animal and has been close enough to that residence, the animal did need to be euthanized at that time," O'Connell said.

Oh yea O'Connell?? And why is that? because it has now turned into a vicious man hunting beast with a thirst for human blood?
or because your a clown who thinks that you are superior to all creatures on the planet and because you decided to put your track home in this poor animal's habitat you now have to kill it so it wont do what its supposed to do and prey on animals it catches (your friends dog)

Because it has learned that it can find easy prey near humans and it shows no fear of attacking a human.

That's the risk you take when you live in the area of a large predator. Following that logic, hey the river in my state (NJ) floods a lot. Let's just dry out the river and screw the eco system.

actually it did show fear... the boy (10 yrs old by the way) stood up and that was enough for the cat to back down.

the boy ran away from the cat... thats exactly what your supposed to not do with cats. you can't punish an animal for being exactly what it was made to be. its not fair and its incredibly ego centric.

A remote country home is hardly a "tract" home.

As to your other assertion-- Yes man is (for now) superior to all other ceatures on this earth by way of intelligence. But for the intelligence of Homo Sapiens, we would be much further down on the food chain, as was evidenced by the quick reactions by the boy and his father. The boy knew to stand up and face the lion rather than lie on the ground as a prey animal would do.

If man is superior to all animals on earth than why is it only man who is so entirely dysfunctional?

you have an incredibly ego-centric view of life and the world. we are smart, yes, and we have thumbs so we can make tools. but we are constantly being surprised at how intelligent other animals are. we are finding dolphins, crows, elephants, whales, etc demonstrating skills that prior to the last decade we thought only humans possessed. maybe its our lack of understanding, respect and appreciation of the animals kingdom that is keeping us from seeing that we are not that superior.

every other animal on the planet exists in harmony with the forces of nature. we are the only one that constantly fights nature. I'd say being able to live simply and in harmony makes them superior to our hateful, vengeful and neurotic ways.

And the boy stood up out of impulse... if he was so knowledgable he wouldn't have ran in the first place
12:57 AM on 09/25/2011
The "quick reactions" of the boy who 'knew' to stand up and face the lion? Please... The kid did nothing but run scared and probably pissed his pants doing it.
The father shooting in the air tells me the cat was no real threat, if it were he would've shot at the cat.

Man is a virus of this planet. We're killing the earth and everything on it including ourselves eventually.

You are in the woods, where you know there is wildlife, and you let your 10 year old son wonder away? Good job Dad. Because of your stupidity another beautiful creature is dead. And what the hell is wrong with the Fish and Game people in Idaho? If you think the animal could be a threat to people in the future what is wrong with tranquilizing it and moving it to a sanctuary or a zoo? Why do humans automatically feel they have the right to kill any animal, for any reason, at any time. People continue to breed like rabbits and therefore have left wildlife with very little habitat in which to survive and now they are not even safe in what little we have left them. The Dad is solely responsible for the lions death and should be required to pay, whatever it costs, to have a new cougar introduced into the wild in that area.

Mountain lions are spreading all the way to the East Coast. Sorry, we don't need an apex predator in the suburbs of Chicago, three have been killed by cars recently. We are not moving into their territory, they are moving into our children's playgrounds.
12:01 AM on 09/24/2011
I didn't realize people hunted in "children's playgrounds". Your point (if you can call it that) is ridiculous!!!!!
01:01 AM on 09/24/2011
Yes you missed my point. It is the mountain lions that are hunting in our children's playgrounds. They were not here before. I saw it in the Phoenix suburbs and now, due to the deer population explosion, have migrated through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois etc to Connecticut. This was never their range nor territory. The Mountain Lions are in the burbs now.
06:56 PM on 09/25/2011
Why don't you feed your kids to the lion...then they wouldn't be hungry.
01:38 AM on 09/24/2011
no you already took their territory, they're just trying to reclaim it..
03:11 AM on 09/24/2011
Sure, and look at the easy pickings in a children's playground! Why the lions wouldn't have to leave there to find food.............it's already there!
11:26 PM on 09/23/2011
This is BS. I think it is a made up story so they wouldn't get in trouble for killing the lion. The lion is probably a protected species or it isn't in season to hunt it or maybe not even legal to hunt where they were hunting. Believe me, if a mountain lion gets that close to be able to scratch you, you are in trouble. Scratching you would be the second thing on its mind. Chewing you into pieces would be the first. They swipe at your legs while you run to take you down. They don't scratch your arm. Besides a scratch from a mountain lion would have given him more than first aid could provide for medical care. One swipe and you would have several long slits, going deep, possibly to the bone needing serious medical care. Geesh, what people won't do to get away with something or get in the news.

It was the Idaho Department of Fish and Game which shot and killed the mountain lion. Read the article.

Mountain lion can legally be hunted in Idaho. http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/public/docs/rules/bgMtnLion.pdf
01:49 AM on 09/24/2011
I think the fish and game department should have a hunting season for them. They think they are the animal gods?

The boy lives in a rural area, with woods/forest close to his home. After reading this article, the boys hunting dog was in the woods, and is food for the mountain lion, since that is the lions home. The boy was in the woods looking for his dog. The lion did not attack the kid, nor did the mountain lion come anyway close to where people, pets live. I live in California, and it is well know in Los Angeles that coyotes/mountain lions will eat your pets, and they are not hunted and killed here, because we know they live in the mountains.
11:28 PM on 09/23/2011
the lion killed a domestic animal; e.g., the boy's hunting dog, and ate it, then attacked the boy because he was looking for his dog--read the article..

Yes read the article, the boy was scratched by this mountain lion in the woods where the lion lives, NOT attacked. I bet you would be thrilled if the dog killed the poor lion, that would be OK with YOU. Where do YOU think Mountain Lion's live? What do you think lions eat and how do they eat? YOU want to kill and murder ALL wild animals, that would be good to you?????

Found the rear leg and tail of a cat in my backyard. Since then I have caught a glimpse of a coyote running thru my yard at night. This is in the burbs of Tampa Bay area.
11:34 PM on 09/23/2011
Burbs of Chitown have Bobcats, Coyotes and some Pumas. Thinking about that with little kids is a bit scarey. BTW, No Cayotes existed East of the Mississippi until we built the bridges, just a factoid.

I have a convertble and cats love to lay on the top. That lets cat hair all over the trunk. I have found three different options dealing with cats. 1) Pet Smart or some such store has a motion sensor spray thay emits citronella. Cats hat this. 2) Talk to the owners. 3) Rat traps.baited with hot dog.....#1 is preferalbe but only resort to #3 if owner does not comply.

Never let the hand you hold, hold you down.
12:20 AM on 09/24/2011
That really doesn't work with territorial animals like mountain lions. They establish a territory and stick with it. Moving them only means you'll have to re-trap them when they return home. Once these animals - mountain lions, coyotes, bears - come to associate human beings with food, they ARE incredibly more dangerous and, unfortunately, do need to be taken down or else we end up losing quite a few people. How do we keep these animals from being killed? STOP FEEDING THEM! Stop leaving out garbage, pet food, and small pets unattended. Don't allow small children to wander off without an adult in areas where these animals live. It's really not all that hard.

Stay out of their territory. They have a right to live unless they harm a person. If you take your dog into the wild and let him loose, the death of the animal is your fault. Every creature has a home territory and it is their right to be there. Didn't you know that?

I hate people like this?! this lion was just acting like a lion and yet it was killed for acting like a lion. Humans always do this. A wild animal will act like a wild animal and then we punish it by killing it. We basically kill the animal for acting like it's supposed too. Animals can't act like animals anymore. They get killed for it.

Would you volunteer your yard for the next one? Cats breed like....cats. The population essentially doubles every 2-3 years, that's why they have to constantly keep looking for new territories.
02:27 AM on 09/24/2011
Domestic cats yes but not wild ones. Cubs have a 50/50 chance of living and seeing as the average litter is 3. That means one or two if it is a good two year will make it to adult hood after that the mom will kick them out. They breed only every 2-3 years.

i dont get it, people invade an animals habitat and after an encounter its the animal that is killed, stay the hell out of their environment and you wont become injured or killed, and neither will the animals.......
