"If it turns out that Earthlings aren't alone in the universe and contact is eventually made between us and an extraterrestrial race, would we actually accept them as new-found friends and galactic neighbors?"

Ronald Reagan said it best when he said that wouldn't it be great if we were attacked by extraterrestrials? Humanity could bond together to fight a common enemy. I think that if we ever are visited by an advanced and intelligent race, there will be multitudes of people clammoring for war. I really, really do not think that it is anything to stay awake worrying about though. :)

To a billion year old specie, we humans I would imagine be viewed with sympathy as they would see clearly our slowness. Our inablility to learn not to be self distructive and so brutal with each other. The middle east for example has after 3000 years still not learned not to hit each other over the head, still not learned after 3000 years the dead end roads of brutality.

They would view us with sympathy when seeing our slowness, our very primitively developed brains and our inability to view the long term consequences of our human behavior.

I hope they would view us with sympathy.

There were no primates a billion years ago (not even 20 million years ago). There were birds and fish and little fuzzy mammals and LOTS of bugs...but no hominids. I think this old lady down my street used to babysit some of the first creatures...but not people. She told me. I live in Florida and she's been retired for a very long time.

You are only seeing the planet earth. The cosmos is a very very large place.

I expect they would view us, at best, as we view the species of apes that we are familiar with, with some reservations.

If God did create more life then they should be sin free since God sent his only son here to die for us sinners.
03:20 AM on 10/11/2011
If GOD does not want us to sin and Jesus was sent here to die for our sins...shouldn't we sin? If not then Jesus died for nothing.
10:24 AM on 10/11/2011
Hey, do your homework--"ALL HAVE SINNED AND COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD, AND THE LORD HATH LAID ON HIM THE INIQUITY OF US ALL."
So we go ahead and sin, since Jesus has already paid the price for us, and we can go to "Heaven" anyway. It is inevitable, living as humans in this world, that we WILL SIN.

Beware of Liberals posing as Americans
11:38 PM on 10/10/2011
"coming here to give us a firm warning, like the prophets of the Old Testament did: 'You're in deep trouble and it's going to get worse unless you shape up!" Isn't that the attitude that got America on poor standings with most of other countries? Tell them what to do, acting superior? You'd think we'd have learned that lesson by the time we make contact with another world.

If we are any example then there is little chance of intelligent life in the universe.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT. ESPECIALLY OUR POLITICIANS.
09:34 AM on 10/12/2011
And since we're such POOR stewards of the planet, the real question is whether the planet will rock and roll us off the earth before we reach the point where intelligent life would venture to communicate with us. The clock is ticking!

Any aliens advanced enough to travel lightyears from their planet to ours would likely look at us as we look at cockroaches. Based on our treatment throughout history with weaker members of our own species, we better hope that the aliens would have better morals than we do.
12:10 AM on 10/11/2011
First you make an uninformed comment about "imaginary deities." Then you hope they have better morals than us. Without an "imaginary deity," where would these morals derive from?

"There is something infantile in the presumption that somebody else has a responsibility to give your life meaning and point… The truly adult view, by contrast, is that our life is as meaningful, as full and as wonderful as we choose to make it."

Some people don't need the threat of "divine retribution" in order to do what is right. Some people just do right because it is the right thing to do.

Not really sure what you base this theory on. We have come a long way technology wise as well as our understanding of how the universe works and we have not changed. What makes you think a little more experience and technology really changes primal behavior?

That is my whole point. If they are as viscious as we are and, in addition, far more advanced, we have much to fear from alien visits.

In the first place, many churches won't even share their pew with homosexual earthlings. And in the second, any aliens smart enough for interplanetary travel are advanced enough not to believe in imaginary dieties.

I think a true alien encounter would unite the Earth's people into being "people of Earth" rather than nations. We might just all get along finally.

If they didn't "screech" us before we could......
09:38 AM on 10/12/2011
No...no...not the Screech!! Maybe they'd just Reduct us, or the almost enjoyable Mind meld! (Yeah, not likely if they can't detect a sufficient mind.)
10:27 AM on 10/11/2011
NO WAY. Humans would immediately divide into two groups--pro-alien and anti-alien. The pros would see them as a money-making opportunity and the antis would see them as something it is OK to kill.

If anything the arrival of ETs should be a challenge to religious folks to expand their notions rather than doubling down and defending ideas that were created hundreds of years ago when our ancestors were less knowledgeable about the world around them.

If ETs arrive on the scene and share their own faith in a universal consciousness, why not view it as a grander creation of a grander God, instead of viewing it in the narrow, paranoid terms of medieval theology?

What if Yahweh of the old testement turns out to have been a crazy, power-hungry extraterrestrial being that manipulated the ancient Hebrews for his own egomaniacal ends? Is that a challenge to your entire faith? Or is your faith really more about loving one's fellows, and being amazed at the complexity and intricacy of creation? If so then any possible revelations about the past should simply serve to reveal more of the breathtaking depth of our soul's journey. It's all just another drama on the stage, part of an ongoing process of unfoldment and discovery.

More than anything else, humanity's insistence on proselytizing aliens with our absurd, nonsense religions, will be the one thing that leads to Earth being vaporized from orbit.
09:59 PM on 10/10/2011
The reason this whole thing is absurd is that there are no aliens to proselytize to in the first place. It's a moot point.

So in a Galaxy with trillions of stars and 100's of billions of planets; billions of which are undoubtedly in the "Goldilocks Zone" of their star....Earth is the ONLY one to have developed life?

If it was so absurd and impossible, then WE wouldn't be here either.

They'd share a pew with an alien but not with a gay person . . .

Again with the comparison and confusion of a "race" issue with a moral issue. A false analogy.

09:42 AM on 10/12/2011
Not really. Don't most 'chistIans' consider gay people to be 'alien', as in 'different, un-natural, in-human!!!? In fact, this thread may spur some of them to start studies of gays as alien forms!!! OMG.

Actually, in an obscure way, there is a point you are making there. Pedophiles are currently using the same sort of arguments homosexuals used to try and gain acceptance. Next will be the bestiality crowd.
