State of the Union addresses are Washington's favorite rituals, full of pomp and circumstance but little substance. Here we attempt to provide a viewer's guide to this quintessential Washington institution, on display once again Tuesday night. The triumphant march to the podium, lawmakers mugging for the cameras, multiple introductions, the works. Still, Obama might have an opportunity to do something new.

There is no reason for any liberal or progressive to watch tonight's proceedings.

Our DLC corporatist President will refuse to draw any lines in the sand and talk about meaningless bipartisanship.

His speech will be free of any values or ideology, just meaningless feel good bromides about getting along.

I'm going to see a movie instead. At least I'll be stimulating the economy.
