Whatever the circumstances and fallout of Keith's departure, NBC News still faces this weird contradiction of how to run a middle-of-the road news network and a partisan cable channel. At this juncture it is hard to tell if losing Olbermann was personally or editorially driven. It would seem to be the former, as MSNBC prime time remains without ideological balance (at least among the hosts). This is why I resigned as a contributor last year. There is obviously a market niche for the type of partisan viewers MSNBC reaches, but considering that it is run by the same editorial bosses who command NBC how can the network have it both ways? At least set up MSNBC under separate management and give NBC personnel a chance to maintain their standards as objective journalists.

I love how after "contributing" and seeming to enjoy himself quite a bit making fun of republican's and Fox news' "factually challenged" hosts for quite a long time, now Mr. Crawford has become the ultimate Very Serious Person, decrying the lack of "balance" in MSNBC prime time.
Yes that's what we need, more parroting the notion that there is "middle of the road" news and then there is "partisan" news.
What about news that are factual vs. news that are based on falsehoods? Seems to me that dichotomy is much more helpfull to a democracy and I dare Mr. Crawford to name a single instance in which Keith or Rachel reported something factually innacurate that was not immediately corrected. THAT is the difference between what could be called "partisan news" and journalism. Most journalism includes opinion because the framing of the context in an issue can be construed as opinion whether the facts are accurate or not but what is NOT journalism is opinion based on pulling things out of your "mouth".
By far the most dangerous and corrosive element in news in my opinion is precisely the presence of "professional" commentators (those without their own shows) these travelling pundits who are not journalists per se but need to find something insightfull to say every day on 4 different broadcasts.
They sell their promiscuity of opinion as serious analisys, they are like little sheherezades making up opinions as they go along, watering down the truth as a byproduct.

Craig, if mainstream news networks and so-called "objective" journalists did their job, there would be no need for people like Olbermann and Maddow, et al. But the truth is, before Olbermann, mainstream news commentators and pundits let the Republican propaganda machine and Fox News control their reporting, never bothering to question Bush administration assertions, never bothering to give people like Richard Clarke air time to let the American people know that the White House was warned about Bin Laden before 9/11. Without Olbermann, who would have brought the Bush to rture program to light? If not for Keith letting us hear from industry insiders like Wendell Potter, the majority of Americans would still believe that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provided for "De ath panels that would 'pull the plug on Grandma.'"

That is precisely why we need the Olbermanns and Maddows, to peel back the layers of garbage presented by Fox and the Republicans so that we can make informed choices about our leadership and the direction of our country. These folks and MSNBC perform a crucial service to our country; just because they don't give equal time to the li es of the right does not mean otherwise. At present, they are the only ones standing between and you and a those who threa ten the core of our democracy; CNN, ABC, and CBS sure aren't going to do it.

Dang! Too bad this didn't happen just a few weeks earlier. Olberman could have joined with Oprah on her new network, and it could have been called the O-O! channel.

Objective journalism is not real. If you look close enough there is always some bias. It is fine to present the facts and follow with your interpretation of them. The key is not to confuse the two. I think K.O. did a good job of that.

I will watch MSNBC only as long as Cenk Uygur is on. He's on at 6 for what seems like an indefinite period of time for now. He is a true progressive, probably more of a leftie than Olbermann. I strongly suggest watching at 6PM and giving him a chance!

Lawrence O. called out Nancy Pelosi, The other hosts regularly criticize dems,
So where is the Partisanship? I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Check out CNN. They're starting to introduce religiousy things. They have Christian-themed "documentaries" and some of their news talk programs have started introducing religiousy stuff.

It's really, really creepy.

If Crawford thinks the editorial control between NBC News and MSNBC is bad now, just wait until Comcast takes over. Will Comcast tell both divisions not to criticize companies the cable company must do business with? Don't bash Fox, we have to pay to carry their stations we don't need your division putting that at risk. Don't bash Disney for the same reason. It's one thing to anger individual advertisers. They can always be replaced. It's another to anger the owner of television stations your cable division HAS to carry. What if NBC news angers Disney and Disney tells Comcast they won't renew their carriage contract? Or they raise the price? Or they will only renew if they put a muzzle on the news division.

This deal is SOOOOOOO WRONG!

Whether or not they admit it, Comcast really started taking over many months ago. Phil Griffin started getting his marching orders to fire liberals and tone down the network, so he cooked up a reason to fire David Shuster and turn the daytime schedule into a muted down version of its former self. Contessa Brewer and Tamron Hall, who would always confront the right's lies, had their hours cut down to only one per day, and they hired bland, boring people to fill in.

I wondered why I didn't see Tamron or Contessa much anymore.  MSNBC during the day has been leaning a whole lot further to the right lately.

The evenings at MSNBC were for open, liberal voices, the only ones in the vast wasteland that is cable television.  Now even they are being silenced.
