It's Time for Reality: No Draft, No War

stumbleupon :It's Time for Reality: No Draft, No War   digg: It's Time for Reality: No Draft, No War   reddit: It's Time for Reality: No Draft, No War   del.icio.us: It's Time for Reality: No Draft, No War

War is serious business, a machine that produces amputees, people without faces, people with half their brains destroyed, and corpses so macerated one needs metal dog tags to identify who that was now lying in pieces on the ground at your feet.

It's time to understand the reality that America should never be engaged in a war without the full understanding and cooperation of all Americans -- all socioeconomic classes, all groups.

The only way to ensure such cooperation in a war is a lottery draft that inducts combatants as needed from all classes -- including the class of legislators and government officials who promoted the war in the first place. There's really no other way to ensure that people in power do not use the children of other people as mere cannon fodder to further their own purposes.

Our leaders have been telling us for years now that we're in a war to save Western civilization. They now tell us the war in Iraq is part of the greater war, the "War on Terror." And yet the sons and daughters of these same leaders continue their parties, their education, their privileged lives, while the sons and daughters of ordinary Americans are overseas in a foreign land getting their bodies chopped up in the meat-grinder of a nasty war.

Mitt Romney says his sons are not fighting in Iraq because they're contributing to the war effort by helping him get elected president. When pressed, he mumbles that we have a "volunteer" army, so his sons don't need to serve.

Maybe Mitt Romney is too dense to understand that's precisely the problem: history shows than an American volunteer army will always be an army without full participation across the socioeconomic board. In this country, such an army always consists predominantly of lower middle class and poverty class kids, never an equal spread of risk.

It's not fair. It's hypocrisy. It's shameful to tell the American people this "War on Terror" is a war to save Western civilization while your own children continue their safe lives.

If this war in Iraq is so serious, every American should participate equally in its hazards.

But of course the war-mongers are not calling for a draft, because then the American people will be forced to sit up and take stock of whether they really want their children to go to Iraq to get their faces blown off. And of course if there's a draft, the children of the war-mongers might get drafted. Heaven forbid!

A draft to fight a just war will not ruin America. And if a war is not just, there should be no war at all.

During the Korean War, I was drafted into the U.S. Army after I finished college. I was lucky enough to come home alive and in one piece and continue my ordinary life. We fought the Korean War to contain expansionist Communism. The war lasted only a few years and then it stopped. I thought it was a just war and I've never regretted my service. There's no reason for anyone to fear a draft -- unless you're afraid a draft will turn the American people against a political policy that you know is self-serving and not in the interests of all Americans -- or unless you're afraid your own children will face combat, or even afraid of yourself in combat.

If we're afraid of war, let's not fight wars. And if we think we need to fight a war, let's spread the risk evenly across our people.

When Dick Cheney was asked why he didn't serve in the Viet Nam War, he said he had "other priorities."

What priorities were greater than serving his country in a just war? And if the Viet Nam War was not just, why wasn't he out there with the others protesting the war?

What priorities are greater for Mitt Romney's sons than serving in a just war? And if the war in Iraq is not just, why doesn't he call to end it now?

During the next few weeks, the generals will fly in to tell us about the war in Iraq. The problem is generals are professional warriors who achieve more medals and status in wartime than in peacetime, and apparently too few of them understand that for this country their mission is not to fight war but to prevent it. Their bleat that they just follow orders is ridiculous. If a war is unjust, generals should feel obligated to refuse to wage such a war. And if they think this war is just, why aren't the generals in Iraq calling for a draft?

Above all, a continuing unjust war may kill us as a civilized people. Here are the words of Dave Grossman, a retired Lieutenant Colonel and former Army Ranger and paratrooper:

"We cannot help but come away with an image of war as one of the most horrifying and traumatic acts a human being can participate in. War is an environment that will psychologically debilitate 98 percent of all who participate in it for any length of time. And the 2 percent who are not driven insane by war appear to have already been insane -- aggressive psychopaths -- before coming to the battlefield."

It's an obscene injustice for the likes of George Bush, Dick Cheney, the rest of the gang in the White House, William Kristol, Richard Perle, Mitt Romney and the other Republican candidate mental dwarfs, Fox News, and all the other carnival barkers to keep telling us we need this war when it's obvious they're willing to sacrifice someone else's children but not their own.

Enough! If this war is to continue, we must institute a draft as soon as possible. --------------------------------

Korean War

Viet Nam War

Actually, since the 'death gratuity' from SGLI Insurance
(what Uncle Sam sells the troops) is now as much as $450K,
maybe just what we need is more casualties, in the numbers
only permissible when you've got a whole lot of draftee troops
in Iraq. Oh, and let's get enough for Iran too, while we're at it.

The 'death gratuity' for Vietnam was just $10K, by the way.

'Come on alla you big strong men. Uncle Sam
needs your help again! ... Gonna be a whole lotta fun!'

There is more to it than attaining a political goal with the "draft". As a career military person I can tell you that while the draft was a way to raise mass armies for wars of up through the 60's, it would not adequately support a 21st century, technologically based, highly trained military. I think even you on this site would like to have an effective armed force. A conscripted force could not support the way we must prosecute wars today and certainly not in the future.

Footnote: The urban myth that your nation's armed forces are made up of nothing but the uneducated underclass is just plain wrong and insults those who are willing to assume unlimited liability in defense of a country we love--but then this myth supports your politics so it must be so.....

A reinstated draft is necessary. I firmly believe had a draft been in place when the War Resolution was passed, the congress would have thought long and hard before voting for it. Remember, every elected official would have had to sell their position to the voters back home. And I think it would have been a hard sell; after all, it's one thing to throw a land war with an abstract group of warriors, quite another to throw it when every parent fears for the future of their child.

Also, the American public views this war once removed. Except for the money involved, it is regarded impersonally and there is not, on the streets, a lot of discussion about it. A draft would have provoked an immediate and sustained discussion, which should be encouraged. It would have provoked demonstrations the administration and press could not ignore. At the very least, I am convinced, the troops would be home earlier.

There is no PR machine great enough to counter the fears of parents for the safety of their children.

We need a draft, if too late for this war, at least to induce greater thought about entering into another. The war continues and the population goes about their daily routines with
nary a thought. This should not be. Citizens would be better and continually informed were their children subject to a no-deferment draft and would be forced to choose between their children and oil. No contest, the children win.

"there is no PR machine great enough to counter the fears of parents for the safety of their children".. too bad we caan't "channel" the the dead victims throughout history , especially the 70 Million plus dead victims from WW2. Or maybe just ask an old German, Japanes, or Italian. Or wait, let's ask a suicide bombers parents about PR.

Talk is cheap. Action is dangerous. War is lasting.

Mortgage the war with China? The American dream come true.

My country right or wrong. It is so convenient to have a volunteer military.

Now, we have to seperate the military fighting from the corporate support of the military.
You know, there are more corporate civilians in Iraq than there are military fighters.

Ever wonder why most retirement funds are invested in the stock market? Fact is all are captive to the profit motive. Plundering the treasure (oil) of the invaded. Squandering the wealth (human and treasure) of the invader. Destroying the social fabric of our Constitution.

We should always maintain a military draft with no exceptions or female exclusions. It could be by lottery selection.

Why do we fear the military draft? Ask draft dodgers Chaney-Bush.

I"m sorry but I feel the need to state the obvious, Viet Nam didn"t have oil and natural gas. This was all started before Cheney"s energy task force. I really don"t think MASSIVE protests would stop these people; they would just turn the channel to Fox News.

OH GOSH!

But in 1967, Viet Nam was the second largest producer of rice in the world. Rice that can feed armies. And most of the best land was still swamp and mangrove.

Oh and let"s not forget Tin and Cobalt and Iron and GOLD, to feed Industries and opium to flood the market! And YES, opium has legitimate drug uses, but how much is siphoned off to make our children addicted and feed the black market?

Funny, NOW we are backing another Narco-State. The bin Laden family famous for their Opium derived honey. The Taliban burnt the fields in 2000. Now, 7 year later, China White is half the price and twice as pure and flooding the streets.

Odd huh?

Take the money out of war,,, and there will be NO WAR!

Don"t reinstate the draft.

Reinstate prohibitions against WAR profiteering.

I agree with about massive protests! That is what they would love to happen. "We had to restore order, declare martial law, suspend the constitution and wiretap everyone."

What to do?

VOTE. Vote as if our democracy depended on it!

VOTE for an American, not Neo-Con wedge issues or Hate mongers and FEAR lords.

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

All the best

A draft... You are NUTS! Imagine a world where there are no defferments and lie to me saying the rich sons of Fascists are going in? A dfraft would give this Government all it needs to propagandize every incident on earth intp a neccessaty for war, from Global; Climate Change (hot or cold) to "War on Terror", War on Drugs", Water Wars, Hate Wars. tghose smart enough to see throught the propaganda will summarily be "drafted" and "killed" or those who refuse, will be criminalized and killed. Read some books on Nazi-ism and Fascism, study the histories of Imperial Rulers and Kings. Do we have to follow all the precedent of past so called modern civilizations that when seemingly at their peak are destined to revert to tyranny, oppression, and wholesale activities of expansion by murder, even of its own rank and file citizenry?

Oh please!

A draft deferment is as easy as a phone call from Daddy.

As far as student deferments; there were kids during Viet Nam that were working on their 3rd Ph D.

Draft Boards are filled with the status quo, ALWAYS.

I agree with other here, "Guns and Butter" is NOT a proper way to falsely stimulate an economy, NOR are wars for oil or through which to restore the Nixon Empire.

We once had laws agents war profiteering. You want to end ALL wars, take the money out of the equation.

As far as the New World Order, Globalization, their dream of world domination is about all dried up.

Region Based Economies are now in. (Internet Conferencing and Management makes this possible.)

Control the money, management and profits; but make it local, hire local, Brand local, produce and sell local. Transportation costs are just TOO high to do otherwise and ONLY sure to go higher.

Business is running away from BIG OIL as fast as they can. Innovation is their key, new business models, new products, new manufacturing practices and GREEN.

It is not; how do we get our products into Idaho, it is more; where in Idaho would be a good place for our new Mini-Fab plant? Can we make fabric from sugar beets and potato skins?

We are not seeing a WAR driven revolution, the Neo-Con dream.

We are however, seeing a RE-Evolution.

Money is flooding out of America because of this war, and if you haven"t noticed, MONEY TALKS! Wars may be profitable in the short term, TO A FEW, but it is glaringly clear, ALL SUFFER in the long run.

Even if we were to succeed in Iraq or bomb Iran into the stone age, who would be next in line when the people would throw off their next puppet government?

Couldn"t happen if there is a democracy?

Really?

Hitler deposed his government and prospered, in a democracy. Just food for thought. Take the MONEY out of war and there will BE NO WAR!

JMO

All the best

Military age chickenhawks of all feathers--neocons, National Review and AEI warmongers, the Liar-in-Chief's daughters--ought to get the hell into the Army and Marine Corps. They ought to go Infantry, and volunteer for Iraq.

Personally, I'm opposed to conscription (it's nothing but slavery, after all). However, if it's ever reinstated, there should be very few exemptions. We've got to give the warmongering types the opportunity to fight the war(s) they love so much.

The draft is a necessity in a time of war. We are not prepared to fight a protracted war with the limited combat resources we maintain.

I believe Congress should pass a law that automatically invokes a non-deferment draft whenever the first contingent of the National Guard is mobilized to go to fight.

A law of this type would force both the politicians and the populace to make a more sober assessment of the necessity to deploy combat troops.

I think if we had a law like this in effect before we went into Afganistan and Iraq the country would have insisted that we go into battle with an overwhelming force so that the enemy could be subdued and controlled with the least amount of deaths on our side.

As someone who lived through the draft during the Viet Nam years, I seem to remember that the armed services were similarly skewed; the elite can always wiggle their way around even a draft, and if we had a draft today, well we'd have a hundred thousand more of our kids mired in the middle east, some of whom of course utterly unfit for combat, and the phenomenon which is currently already occurring--gang life in the army--might be an even more profound reality.

Really let's start with the adults now. I want a progressive war tax for all Americans, families of service people exempted, to pay in toto for the cost of the war to date and all future expenditures. What's more these big government contract service companies need to pay a special extra profits tax that would go directly into veterans of the Iraq war medical services. In addition, members of the congress and administration and their staffs should all be tithed 10% of their salary for said veteran medical benefits and counseling. If the nation, corporate America, isn't willing to foot the bill, then forget about it. I am tired of seeing American youth as the fodder for our national paranoias, greeds, and incompetence, and future generations charged with interest for the bill.

Careful what you wish for. The neo-con artists would love to have a draft for more military adventures, more chances to make a buck, but their spawn would be imune. Same as it ever was.
Just wars, unjust wars are meaningless concepts. Do you think Cheney gives a rats ass about justice or about 3700 dead American troops or half a million dead Iraqi's? Obscene injustice is standard operating procedure.
I think you play into their hands if you advocate a draft, especially if one of Newts "pygmies" gets elected. You and Charlie Rangel may be well intentioned in calling for one but with more troops available we could "surge" another 100,000 soldiers into the killing zone for a decade. I never liked the draft when I was subject to it (I won the lottery) and I would not want to expose todays youth to that dread. The exception of course is for a defensive war. And yes, we are at war with Al Qaeda but that is a terrorist group, not a country, and another five million trooops wouldn't help in any way.

Precision of WORDS are crucial. If we are precise, there is no "war." Congress authorized a MILITARY CONFLICT TO SEARCH FOR WMDs IN IRAQ. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. WE'RE DONE. THERE ARE NO WMDs. DONE.

Did OUR elected representatives in Congress authorize US MILITARY to liberate Iraq? NO. Did Congress authorize a "war on terror?" NO. Did Congress authorize a occupation of Iraq? NO. NO PIECE OF LEGISLATION HAS EVER AUTHORIZED ANY OF THE ABOVE ACTIONS BY USING THOSE PRECISE WORDS AUTHORIZING LIBERATION, OCCUPATION, OR FIGHTING A WAR ON TERROR.

Likewise, a "MILITARY DRAFT" is NOT PRECISE LANGUAGE. A Military Draft is SLAVERY. It is age and gender discrimination. It is also the antithesis of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness by those unfortunate enough to be born in the late 80s, early 90s.

IF serving in the MILITARY is "noble," "honorarable," "sacrificial," then why aren't citizens of all ages signing up in droves? Why does the Army beg, plead and PAY for volunteers? Because we as a nation do not employ creative thinking, diplomacy, and nontraditional solutions. Why do we force young men to kill or force them and their families the stress of worrying about a DRAFT/SLAVERY using these young men as PAWNS just to "stop a war" that's never been declared?

End the MILITARY CONFLICT TO SEARCH FOR WMDs IN IRAQ. It takes the guts of those in Congress. It SHOULD NEVER take the GUTS, literally, of our greatest resources, our children, our youth.

(The Constitutional Amendment about gathering an army? IT'S UNCONSTITUTIONAL based on the 13th Amendment ending slavery in America.)

Stop threatening the youth of our country. Ask them instead to offer solutions to conflicts in the world. After all, they possess the most BRILLIANT, INNOVATIVE, TECHNOLOGICALLY-SAVVY, CREATIVE MINDS among us.

And, do not forget the 9/11 Commission concluded that 9/11 happened because arrogant America had a FAILURE OF IMAGINATION. At the very least, a military draft is unimaginative. At its worst, it's SLAVERY which is illegal in the United States of America.

Has Jenna's betrothed enlisted yet? No? Who is he busy helping get elected?

We could propose the following: every "ordinary" person is drafted along with someone from the "privileged" class. We can send them in pairs.
