During his trek, John has been invited (and thrown out of) high schools and bolstered by vigils and events in Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York City, Jersey City, Philadelphia, and now Washington. His web site www.marchinmyname.org tells the tales of many a spirit touched, moved and even changed by learning about John and his dedication to actively protecting the Constitution.
And John hasn't been the only one active on this topic in the last weeks. Congressman Henry Wexler, along with a growing number of his colleagues has been increasing pressure on Chairman John Conyers of the House Judiciary committee to open hearings on the impeachable charges that have been introduced by Dennis Kucinich. A couple of weeks ago, Wexler and two other members of the committee wrote a compelling op-ed detailing why they want to start hearings. After it was refused publication by several major newspapers, Wexler was forced to publish it on the web, along with an online petition for people to sign on to his demand. The number of signers is approaching a quarter million and the op-ed has now been published in at least two major newspapers.
Former Senator George McGovern just published an op-ed in the Washington Post calling for impeachment, the first such call to appear on those pages. (This is the same Washington Post that wouldn't publish the Wexler op-ed a week earlier.)
During the presidential debates, before the power structure shut out Dennis Kucinich, and so the topic of impeachment, his calls for impeachment often received notable outbursts of audience approval. In spite of time almost certainly running out, in spite of an election upon which so many are pinning so much hope, in spite of a rising level of hysteria among liberal Democrats who are frantic that something may upset their apple cart and are begging when not shrilling that the I word not be mentioned, in spite of all this, more and more Americans are deciding that the cost to our nation is too great if we fail to uphold the Constitution and the principles that it embodies. American citizens are united in the belief that the President is not above the law. But a majority in Congress has decided to acquiesce to Mr. Bush's lawbreaking.
Although the establishment media and power elite refuse to acknowledge it, we are in a Constitutional turmoil, and much of the mess we are now in at home and overseas has happened because Congress has allowed the Executive branch to unconstitutionally expand its power to a dangerous degree. We are engaging daily in a deadly, brutal, illegal, counterproductive and expensive occupation in Iraq, but we are dished out a fluff news diet of celebrity misadventures, fears about $4.00 gas, the horserace to be the next Corporate Representative in Chief, the success of the "surge" or Bush's legacy. Many Americans are wondering if they are the only ones feeling distress and outrage. Many feel the utter hopelessness of being a single small voice against the monolith of power and money that seems to decide how things get done.
John Nirenberg's walk turned one man's outrage into a vehicle for thousands to help him take his message to Speaker Pelosi. His time in Washington will make a difference, but it must be followed up by other actions from other quarters. Citizen actions are already starting to have an impact on congress members. Democrats feeling the heat from constituents have started to break ranks from the leadership with recent votes against further war funding and for supporting Kucinich's call for his impeachment bill to be brought to the floor of the House. South Florida activists have been shining a merciless spotlight on anti-progressive actions by their "representatives". Now is the time to turn up the pressure. Let's follow Mr. Nirenberg's lead as he goes into Washington. Let's all take the first steps to reclaiming our Republic, to demand accountability, and to finally end the foul occupation of Iraq that, along with torture, has cast us all in such a shamed and grim light.

This is just another indication that no matter which individual or party takes the white house or congress, the ruling super rich when control our lives. If it were not for this posting on the Huffington post, how many people would know of this mans patriotic attempt to make all men, even the politicians, equal under the law? Where of where is Rhobbes Pierre? He knew how to deal with the corrupt heads of a country.
I am extremely disappointed with The Huffington Post, on an ongoing basis, in the fact that it, too, fills its virtual pages with the "fluff" you spoke of.
Certainly, the effort has been to paint the whole issue as a non-issue, or "beyond consideration," or "it'll never happen," or "are you CRAZY if we breathe the word the [other_party] will win!"
But that's just propaganda.
The reality is, the United States so-far has clearly demonstrated to the world that it is a loose cannon, with nukes. That it is in the back-pocket of certain players in the Middle East. That it will do anything for oil, including trying to install a puppet regime to literally give it all away.
But this pales against the reality that this government has also demonstrated an utter contempt for its own law; or for such basic laws as the Geneva Convention. No one is, or can be, surprised that quite plainly the entire Congress is "in on the game."
We know how this game of lawlessness will end: the country will topple over the edge, and it will be a very long way down, and no one will be in a particular hurry to throw a rope. Why should they?
We also know the only way to end it: enforce the law. We prosecute business CEOs and even Boards of Directors but won't do anything to touch lawbreakers within our own government.
Ms. Pelosi should be frankly told, "this is a law enforcement issue. You do not HAVE 'discretion' in this matter. "'SHALL' be Impeached..." You are guilty of Obstruction of Justice and can be Expelled if you don't.
The "TEFLON DECIDER" will ride off into the sunset, free as a bird , a legend in his own mind and there is nothing the gutless DEMOCRATS are willing to do about it! Sad but true.
Bravo! impeachment is the only way America can accept responsibility for its illegal invasion of Iraq and begin to change . . . pelosi and reid have been a disgrace as majority leaders . . . they have constantly bended to the corrupt regime in the WH . . . they speak double-speak and my Democratic Congressmen keep sending me emails saying how hard they are working for the American people but the most important way (as I continually remind them) is to start with impeachment . . . I have contributed to Wexler's campaign and will do so again . . . we cannot afford to be blinded by election fever and yet not address the underlying causes of the problems facing America . . . impeachment is the only avenue open to anyone who upholds the Constitution .. sadly all too may of our Congresmen like the chimp and the big dick think it is toilet paper.
It has never been fully addressed how a chairmean of any committee in any congress or senate of the U.S. government or State Government is Constitutionally empowered to stop a bill! This "gentlemans's agreement is Treason. It is a procedure and therefore a tactic that has been designed and created as a tactical war manuevor to stop Democracy. Conyers is a Traitor and has been from his first "grooming' into politics.
It is Congressman ROBERT Wexler
Good point! My congressman laughed at the idea of putting impeachment on the table back in September - but forgets this is what millions of voters wanted back in 2006. We expect our politicians to have the backbone to do this. If a blowjob can incense phony holier than thous to get upset at Clinton, why can't thousands of desecrated graves be the start of bringing down the Bush presidency?
We can deal with the lies that led to war afterwards.
I cite FuneralGate as the place to start.

Come on Yanks, you can do it. Take back your country. Impeach the unspeakable turds, then try their asses. Send em to the Haig. Don't stop til you regain some representation in the Media. Fight for truth. Even unpleasant truth. Get behind John Nirenberg, Granny Haddock, Rosie, Code Pink, the Raging Grannies et al. Let em have it.
