I spent the last few days in Ramallah, in search of a few young filmmakers. It turned out to be a lot easier than I anticipated. In short order, I found a dynamic, inspiring, and vibrant community -- bristling with creative energy.

Working with the US Consulate, I arrived in Jerusalem earlier this week to pilot a filmmaking workshop, designed to provide Palestinian youth with media experience and economic opportunities. It's an extension of Howcast.com's (a company I co-founded) Emerging Filmmaker Program. I also found a host of public and private organizations effectively providing a range of vital youth services. There must be more NGO's (non-governmental agencies) per capita than any where in the region -- and for good reason.

The filmmakers I found were most excellent company. In a crowded cafe, (where the amount of smoking possibly surpasses France or Spain,), and in between spirited games of ping-pong, we talked intensely about film, politics, Obama, architecture, politics, Palin, and then film some more.

Ramallah itself was full of surprises. From the best shawarma I have ever eaten, and the amazing sweet treat of kenafeh, to a sudden downpour that soaked downtown, to beautiful embroidery shops and silver smiths, I eagerly await a return visit.

In the days ahead, there will be more project discussions in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. In the coming weeks, the creative process begins.

More to come.
