Behind The Front: The Pro-War "Freedom's Watch"

In the early 1970s, the Nixon Administration took a page out of the tobacco industry's playbook and actively organized front groups to counter the anti-war efforts of Vietnam veterans like John Kerry and Bobby Muller. Men like John O'Neill -- later to re-appear as one of the Swift Boat Veterans -- were hired to create what Watergate felon Charles Colson called "counter-foils."

Today with the launch of "Freedoms Watch" our politics are further poisoned by the appearance of another mutant variation of this front-group tactic. Freedoms Watch is a shadowy 501c4 organization created to try to keep Republicans from abandoning the White House on Iraq. Ironically, on the very day the President invoked the legacy of Vietnam, his administration has created this Nixonian front-group counter-foil.

First of all, what is a Front Group? Front Groups have been used by the tobacco industry and the oil and energy companies to create the illusion of independence. "Freedoms Watch" can't just come out and call themselves "former White House aides and Republican fundraisers" so they create a supposedly independent group and fund it heavily. Everyone pretends it is an independent organization that sprang up from grassroots supporters of the war.

So who is behind this front group? While there is some public disclosure of who is involved, there is none on their own web site.

On www.freedomwatch.org, there is no listing of people involved, no names and no contact address. Not ONE SINGLE PERSON is listed as being affiliated with the group. According to the press, "President Bush's first White House press secretary, Ari Fleischer, is the group's spokesman."

What is interesting to note about this site is how similar it is to one of the largest front groups created last cycle, Economic Freedom Fund. This group which was funded by five million dollars from Karl Rove confidante, Bob Perry, attacked Democrats throughout the cycle.

Life Freedoms Watch, their site has no name of an actual person associated with them.

Of course, this is not surprising. We also tracked back where their website is located (they made a little mistake which we caught).

The company, Democracy Data and Communications is a leader in the "astroturf" industry. Their clients include primarily Republican-associated big businesses associations. They actually built a site called www.voteforgeorgebush.com last cycle.

Give them a cause, and a percentage of the $15 million, they'll build you a site and ads.

When "Freedoms Watch" releases their records, we will have a clearer vision into who is giving them money -- $15,000,000 is a lot of money to raise -- and how they are spending their money.

For now, we know they have a lot of money, and they intend to spend it.

And, there is one more funny thing that our good friend Taylor Marsh pointed out. (She also has the first tv spots in her post.) If you call the 1-800 Number that "Freedom's Watch" offers you for contacting your representative, they only actually connect you, if you agree with their policies.

I would REALLY like to see this ad campaign linking 9/11 to Iraq War finally just BLOW UP in Cheney/Fletcher's face...how long do they think a tired old LIE will sell?
07:18 PM on 08/23/2007
Ari Fletcher can spend millions on this ad campaign and it won't change one mind in America. 72-80% of Americans didn't think Iraq was worth it, and not only want OUT, they want out YESTERDAY! btw. Ari...learn the G*D DAMN name of the amputee Vet you build your sob story on...otherwise you look like you are merely exploiting him.

If Ari Fletcher's and this bogus patriot group's message is so strong FINE, Ari read your message into the camera, and leave the VETS out of your political campaign propoganda.

When the choice is between Democratic cowards and Republican criminals, what can we do?

The courts are stacked, the DOJ is infested, the military is crusading, the press is complicit and the people are confused.

Looks like they win. Resistance is futile.

Whereas I can understand how you might feel that way these days, I don't understand why you'd choose a handle with the same sentiment.

Words are used as a decoy.Who's freedom?

WE lost the chance for Iraq to embrace FREE Worlds..Amazing over 2 million people are displaced by the war. So who really Cares?

2 million displaced and over a million dead? There is no one word in the English language to describe this.

As a point of historical reference, front groups date back at least to the 1930's, when the Communist party used them. I wouldn't be surprised if the tactic is far older than that.

The neocons, many of whom are former Trotskyists, know this. "Astroturf" groups, formed by lobbyists, have been around since the 1970's, I think.

Of course, that doesn't mean that this pro-war front group should not be exposed as such.

This latet attempt to put lipstick on this Iraq war pig is no match for the collective gut of the American people who realize that a sound policy should never have to be sold.

And the media has Fleischer on. Why? Why have him on? Why go along with the pathetic fiction that "Freedom's Watch", which apparently came out of f'ing nowhere, is a real grassroots organization?

I mean, after Paul Reichoff appeared on "Hardball" a couple of times, suddenly, out of nowhere, "Vets For Freedom" appears, complete with a machine-gun-fire-talking mouthpiece ready to catapult the propaganda!

It's sickening how Republicans create these fake groups. And it's even more sickening how the media eats that sh*t and pretends it's chocolate ice cream.

Ari Fleischer is a patriot. Patriotism is the last resort of scroundrels. Its funny how the fascists and communists keep their patriotic flags flying!!

We must be vigilant and shine the light on scams like "freedom" (to only believe our point of view) watch. Ari Fleischer is a cock roach. Shine a light and out he scrambles........

Judgement day God is calling,
On their knees war pigs come crawling,
Begging mercies for their sins,
Satan laughing spreads his wings.

War Pigs, Black Sabbath.

I think it's "...day of judgment; God is calling"

Iraq tied to 9/11? I thought we were there for WMD's....no wait.... to free them....um... to liberate them....or is it to spread Democracy. What is the reason du jour? I guess since all of their "reasons" are failing, they have to go back to fear mongering.

If we could only educate Middle America, they may gain an independent thought process and that would sink Bush and the Repukingcans.

Unfortunately, higher education is almost out of reach for most people, and the Repukes know this. Keeping them ignorant makes them easy to control.

Russia has done it for centuries and still does it today by killing off the media and any other source of outside information.

Some Freedom Watch, they actually connect you with your representative only if you agree with their point of view. That is an idea of freedom only George Bush and Karl Rove could love- the freedom of like-minded citizens to be like-minded.

The far right never did like the idea of an honest debate and never will.

Glad to hear The Minisrty of Truth has a new campaign in their goal to make Double Speak our nations 'native' tongue. Thought they may be feeling like the troops- over extended and exhausted.
Good time to Re-read 1984 George Orwell (the prophet), Check out The Jungle too, familiar situation to our current worker rights & safety.

"It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis is also a great re-read.

Seeing their first ad ,which included a still photo of a plane flying into the Twin Towers was puke-inducing. Worse was hearing that liar on Morning Joe this morning on MSNBC, Ari Fleischer, The group's "front man" refuse to discuss all the failures and false assertions of the Bush White house about our occupation of Iraq. He refused to answer why we should believe these liars now! He also refused to talk about the fact there were no terrorists in Iraq until we got there! He lied when he said his group had no contact or coordination with The White House or its communications arm!!These Repugs have no friggin' shame!

oh gawd....i watched this show ths morning....i had high hopes for scarborough as he was following imus, and expected the same caliber of political discourse.....but we must remember one thing about scarborough....he dropped out of active politics when a female aide was found dead in his office....he never questioned fleischer as to who was funding his 'group'...15million is alot of money..where did it come from.
