Now Onto Immigration

Now that the main legislative push on health care is completed, the oxygen should return to the legislative process on a host of other domestic issues. Prime among them is immigration. Even as Congress was finishing its work on health care, tens of thousands of people rallied this past weekend in Washington, DC to press for comprehensive immigration reform. As the nation looks to this important issue, policy makers should begin by discussing the the Schumer-Graham immigration blueprint. It contains three pillars that should be on the table for the beginning of the immigration discussion: serious border security to reduce illegal immigration, a worker program for immigrants who come to or are in the U.S., and a programmatic shift to favor highly skilled workers.
