Avi Shlaim's Anti-Israel Diatribe

Posted: 03/ 7/2012 9:06 am

The name Avi Shlaim may not be widely known on the street, but in the United Kingdom, and particularly in academic settings, it is.

An emeritus professor of international relations at Oxford University, he has been a prodigious writer on the Middle East.

When it comes to Israel, where he once lived, Shlaim can barely contain himself, throwing any semblance of scholarship to the wind and working himself into a lather at its mere mention.

Take, for example, his op-ed in The Independent, a British daily, earlier this week.

Entitled "Obama must stand up to Netanyahu," and published on the day that President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu met in the White House, Shlaim breathlessly mined the English language for ever more vituperative things to say about Israel and its leadership.

Here are some of the results:

Benjamin Netanyahu is "a bellicose, right-wing Israeli nationalist, a rejectionist... and a reactionary." His government is "the most aggressively right-wing, diplomatically intransigent, and overtly racist government in Israel's history." It is a government of "militant nationalists." It "is in danger of drifting towards fascism." He is "a jimcrack politician." He is "the war-monger in chief."

Isn't that the same Netanyahu who, whatever his other alleged faults might be, has moved his Likud Party to accept a Palestinian state, introduced a partial freeze on settlements as a goodwill gesture to restart peace talks with the Palestinians, and played a part in the economic revival of the West Bank and security cooperation with the Palestinian Authority?

Oh, and Ehud Barak, Israel's defense minister, according to Shlaim, "regards diplomacy as the extension of war by other means." Moreover, he is a "bitkhonist, a security-ist who wants 100 percent security for Israel which means zero security for the Palestinians."

Isn't that perchance the same Barak who, as prime minister, collaborated with President Clinton to offer Yasir Arafat a viable Palestinian state and the chance for enduring peace?

In fact, Shlaim has to draw from other things he's written, since the English language apparently is not rich enough for ever new expressions of outrage.

In a 2010 edition of The Antonian, the newsletter of St. Antony's College (Oxford), he wrote, in another brutal assault on Israel, that "Netanyahu is like a man who, while negotiating the division of a pizza, continues to eat it."

In the Independent op-ed, he said "He (Netanyahu) is like a man who pretends to negotiate the division of a pizza while continuing to gobble it."

Now, again, please bear in mind that we're not just talking about anyone here, but about an emeritus professor at Oxford University. He has taught countless students from around the world and supervised who-knows-how-many dissertations.

And we're also talking about a widely-read newspaper in Britain that opted to publish this -- let's call it by its proper name -- screed.

At a time when the U.S. and Israeli leaders meet in Washington to discuss the ominous challenge of Iran's nuclear program, Shlaim assails Israel for every alleged misdeed, yet, oddly, or perhaps tellingly, fails to address the Iran question.

Well, not exactly. He does claim Israel is trying "to drag America into a dangerous confrontation," but doesn't offer any solution of his own.

That might suggest he either doesn't believe Iran has a nuclear program -- which would put him at odds with the U.S. and European governments, not to mention the International Atomic Energy Agency -- or he doesn't feel it poses a threat to anyone. Wait, there is one more possibility. He might actually welcome the program as a response to the reviled Israel. Which is it?

And he also reveals his "penetrating" insights when he declares that "the main threat to regional stability is not Iran but the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories."

Mind you, Iran is moving headlong towards nuclear-weapons capability and delivery systems, Arab neighbors are frightened to death, and all Shlaim sees is the Israeli occupation as the main threat to the Middle East.

President Obama declares that a nuclear-armed Iran would trigger a new arms race in the volatile Middle East, strengthen the hand of terrorist groups and give Tehran a stranglehold on a good chunk of the world's oil supply, but all Shlaim sees is the occupation.

The Sunni-Shiite rift is as pronounced as ever, but all Shlaim sees is the occupation.

Syria is butchering its own people right and left, but all Shalim sees is the occupation.

Egypt, the Arab world's most populous country, is gripped by the mano-a-mano struggle for power between the military and the Islamists, and all Shlaim sees is the occupation.

The Arab world, according to the Arab Human Development Index, faces profound freedom, knowledge, and gender deficits, which put it way behind much of the rest of the world, but all Shlaim sees is the occupation.

And four consecutive Israeli prime ministers, including his arch-nemeses, Netanyahu and Barak, have embraced a two-state plan, only to be rebuffed by Palestinian leaders, but all Shlaim sees is the occupation.

I'm lucky, I suppose.

When I was at Oxford, I studied Soviet matters and, fortunately, had distinguished, clear-headed professors.

But pity the students who have been exposed to this kind of poisoned thinking.

And pity the readers of The Independent who are invited to read such drivel, all the more during a momentous week in Middle East and U.S.-Israeli diplomacy, when sober analysis is sorely needed.

As my beloved grandmother used to say, what's the world coming to?

Unusual to see a former Senior Associate, St. Antony's College, Oxford, bagging one of the esteemed College's most senior and distinguished members. Perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye.

"Netanyahu who, whatever his other alleged faults might be, has moved his Likud Party to accept a Palestinian state"

Honestly don't they have a fact checker or editor here?
This is not even close to being correct.
There were big piblic fights over him not recognizing palestine as a state very recently at the UN

Wrong. Netanyahu was opposed to recognition of Palestine in the UN (without negotiations), but he has expressed support for a 2-state solution. That is most certainly a shift in Likud's position.
03:35 PM on 03/09/2012
he have expressed support for some day having a two state solution in theory

but he does not recognize palestine as an independent state

Palestinine doesn't have to negotiate with israel for their own statehood, they are already a state, we are still waiting for israel to recognize that

Sounds like a good article from the Telegraph. Ill check it out. The funny thing is, historically the Telegraph is the closest thing the UK has had to a Neocon rag. Maybe theyve seen the light.

Mr Harris continuing to censor and libel (anti-Israel?) those who don't tow the Tel Aviv line. Crying a river because another co-religionist called Bibi bellicose; or better said, attempting to "Goldstone" Shlaim into eating his own words. He was right, nobody heard of Mr Shlaims until Mr Harris opened his mouth to defend the Likudniks and settlers again. When is Mr Harris goping to tow Washington's Foreign Policy line of stopping the settlements? Does that make him Anti-American? By his standards, it does.
03:02 PM on 03/07/2012
Thank you for providing the link to this article, I found it quite enlightening and to the point. Incidentally, Dr. Shlaim's criticism of Likud does not mean he is anti-Israel.
02:53 PM on 03/07/2012
I find most interesting Mr. Harris' repeating of the Israeli-talking point that "...Arab neighbors are frightened to death..." of Iran's nuclear program. This talking-point continues to be repeated despite its obvious and easily verifiable factual inaccuracy.

"In the Arab world, Iran is disliked but seen as a threat only by a very small minority. Rather, Israel and the U.S. are regarded as the pre-eminent threat.

"A majority think that the region would be more secure if Iran had nuclear weapons: In Egypt on the eve of the Arab Spring, 90 percent held this opinion, according to Brookings Institution/Zogby International polls.

"Western commentary has made much of how the Arab dictators allegedly support the U.S. position on Iran, while ignoring the fact that the vast majority of the population opposes it—a stance too revealing to require comment."

The concerted efforts of right-wing Zionist notwithstanding, attempts to portray this as anything but an Israeli endeavor is misleading.

Schlaim was the original "New Historian". The others-- Schlomo Sand, Ilan Pappe, Israel Finkelstein, and Benny Morris gained access to pre 1948 records in the UK and wrote the truth about all the myths about the formation of Israel. Morris has since recanted. They are hated and reviled in Israel.
11:31 AM on 03/08/2012
Nope, they wrote the half truth. It has been clearly demonstrated that just about every claim they made was either fabricated or based on a very careful mis-stating of the historical record. If you want the real truth - with meticulous footnotes so you can check it out for yourself - try "Palestine Betrayed" by Efraim Karsh.

Actually I knew of him and have read a reasonable amount of Shlaim's works.

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~ssfc0005/

Of Particular interest is the research he did on the secret meetings between Mrs Golda Meir and King Abdullah of Jordan, how the two of them contrived to stop a Palestinian state from being established.

The Jewish Agency tried to tie ‘Abdullah down to a written agreement but he was evasive. Yet, according to Yaacov Shimoni, a senior official in the Political Department of the Jewish Agency, despite ‘Abdullah's evasions, the understanding with him was entirely clear in its general spirit......

"We would agree to the conquest of the Arab part of Palestine by ‘Abdullah. We would not stand in his way. We would not help him, would not seize it and hand it over to him. He would have to take it by his own means and stratagems but we would not disturb him. He, for his part, would not prevent us from establishing the state of Israel, from dividing the country, taking our share and establishing a state in it."

Thus indicating that the Jewish agency was only giving lip service when it agreed to resolution 181.
03:38 AM on 03/08/2012
More Palestinian propaganda. We know who threatened war prior to 181 and went ahead with their promise right after outright rejecting the resolution, and it wasn't Israel. Revisionists try hard to reverse reality's but those "new historical facts" most of time end up being shot right down.

People of goodwill everywhere realize that the extremist government of Israel and their agents in Washington have far too much power over the foreign policy of America and we should be listening to patriotic Americans who want us to have an independent foreign policy and to promote peace with justice in the middle east by demanding that both Iran and Israel renounce nuclear weapons.

Slander and libel. It says everything about a writer (and their cause) when they resort to personal attacks, rather than argue the points.
As for the claim Netanyahu embraces a 2 state solution, that's a complete and total lie. Israel could have had peace years ago under the Arab League plan - their response was to invade Ramallah within 24 hours.
04:13 PM on 03/07/2012
There's no slander or libelous remarks, and Mr. Harris's comments are backed up w/facts. Saudi Plan, was not a negotiating offer, it was a demand, and a call for a right of return, meaning, destruction of the Jewish State of Israel.

1937 partition plan, 1947 partition plan, 1967 plan, 1993/95 Oslo plan, 2000Camp David plan, Road Map 2003, 2005 Unilateral disengagement of Gaza, 2008 Olmert offer, ALL REJECTED BY ARAB/Pal'n, all followed by Arab wars, intifada's, suicide bombing campaigns, daily rocket/mortar attacks still going on today, and Unilateral Declaration for State by Palestinian broken and split leadership which failed and was contrary to Oslo agreement. It's clear who doesn't want a two state solution. Just look at the Hamas and PLO charter.

"their response was to invade Ramallah within 24 hours"
Distortion and deception. Israel's incursion into Ramallah, was after a year and half of Pal'n violence (second intifada) that murdered over 250 Israelis at the time, and on same day as Arab/Saudi plan, the deadliest attack by Pal'n suicide bomber took place known as Passover Massacre, that's what prompted Israel's Operation Defensive Shield in Ramallah. But don't let these nuggets of facts get in the way of your narrative.

There never was an Arab peace plan. It was a sham. Give the Palestinians what they want and they we will think about normalizing relations with Israel. Optics look good but never ever trust an Arab to give a Jewish state peace and security. Besides the leaders who made that offer are not in power any more. The Muslim Brotherhood is in charge and they will not make peace with Israel and threaten to cancel Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.
