What More Threatens Our Security: 50 Idiots or Permanent Occupation?

In the last few days, politicians and the media have said that Pastor Terry Jones' and his 50 followers disgusting plans to burn Korans are a clear and present danger to America's national security because the hideous act would inflame anti-Americanism in the Muslim world and potentially incite an Islamic terrorist backlash. This is apparently such a national security threat, that the Secretary of Defense was forced to personally intervene.

As grotesque as Pastor Jones' plans were, the American media and politicians have barely mentioned a blockbuster story in the UK Guardian reporting that "12 American soldiers face charges over a secret 'kill team' that allegedly blew up and shot Afghan civilians at random and collected their fingers as trophies." The same media and politicians also haven't mentioned the possibility that America's continued military occupation of two Muslim countries might inflame anti-Americanism in the Muslim world and incite an Islamic terrorist backlash. And, of course, those politicians and reporters don't mention the possibility that the killing of between 600,000 and 1 million Iraqis in the American occupation might inflame anti-Americanism in the Muslim world and incite an Islamic terrorist backlash.

Comparing the 24-7 coverage of the Pastor Jones controversy to the near total lack of attention given to these Iraq/Afghanistan-related stories, the media and the political Establishment seem to be saying that the momentary PR stunt of 50 idiots in Florida is a far bigger threat to American security than what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan.
