Yesterday, I wrote a long piece about how there is not one shred of actual hard data to sustain the assumption being peddled in Washington that pro-exit-strategy Democrats will be punished for their positions by voters. I also made the point that not being pro-exit-strategy is a recipe for disaster. Now today, we get a pristine example of exactly what I am talking about, from the local paper in a congressional district that is considered one of the Democrats' top potential pickups in 2006.
This story shows exactly how the Republicans are capitalizing not on Democrats who are concrete in their support of an exit strategy, but how the GOP is feasting on Democrats who try to have it both ways and split the difference, as the "strategists" in Washington are prescribing. Just read the article's subheading: "[GOP] Congressman derides other side's lack of stance on troop withdrawal question." Sadly, that says it all.
I would encourage everyone who reads this article to copy it and paste it into an email to DCCC Chairman Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D) - the guy who likens himself to the great electoral savior of Democrats, yet who publicly says Democrats will not have a position on the war. Send him this story, tell him to read it and then look at himself in the mirror: beyond the fact that he and the Democratic "strategists" in Washington are disgustingly playing politics with war and peace, this article shows exactly why they are the reason the party is not making serious political gains today.
