The Least Funny Prank Call Ever

Most of reporter Ian Murphy's prank call to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker was fairly innocuous. Governor Walker, who thought he was talking to billionaire Tea Party backer David Koch, laid out some of his strategies for luring the 14 missing Democratic state senators back to Wisconsin. His proposals included an embarrassingly toothless plan to try to bring ethics charges against the state senators if they were being "paid up" by unions while outside of the state, and a proposal to withhold the Senators' paychecks from them.

To some, this whole ordeal was even a little bit funny. How could a sitting governor get so badly fooled as to think this guy in Buffalo was David Koch? The sheer incompetence of Governor Walker must at least be worthy of a chuckle, right?

But I am not laughing.

I am furious.

When the fake David Koch told the governor that he was thinking about planting troublemakers in the crowd, Governor Walker responded by admitting, "We thought about that."

I have been in the Capitol for the last 10 days, and it has been nothing but peaceful. Things have been so peaceful, as a matter of fact, that the Madison Police released the following statement to the protesters last Saturday:

"You conducted yourselves with great decorum and civility, and if the eyes of the nation were upon Wisconsin, then you have shown how democracy can flourish even amongst those who passionately disagree."

On the day of the dual Tea Party and pro-union protests, no major incidents were reported and no arrests were made.

The fact that Governor Walker even considered deliberately sending "troublemakers" into the Capitol to put my safety and the safety of thousands of his other constituents at risk should at the very least be grounds for impeachment. It should be noted that on Wednesday afternoon at the Capitol I saw two elderly women in wheelchairs and at least five small children who were there with their parents.

Of course, Governor Walker didn't actually send in these "troublemakers." However, his explanation for why he refrained may be even more damaging than the admission itself. Here's the full text from the conversation.

Murphy (as Koch): Right, right. Well, we'll back you any way we can. But, uh, what we were thinking about the crowds was, uh, was planting some troublemakers.

Walker: You know, the, well, the only problem with that -- because we thought about that. The problem -- the, my only gut reaction to that is right now the lawmakers I've talked to have just completely had it with them, the public is not really fond of this. The teachers union did some polling of focus groups, I think, and found out that the public turned on 'em the minute they closed school down for a couple days.

Governor Walker refrained from sending thugs to assault the people in the Capitol not because it was a dangerous, felonious, and borderline tyrannical act, but rather because it was not politically expedient.

I think I speak for all my compatriots who have been with me at the Capitol when I say Governor Walker should be ashamed of himself, and the public must hold him accountable for these comments.

what about the fact that this gov thought he was going to be flown to california and showed a good time for his efforts to bust the unions? that sounds like accepting a bribe to me

Has anyone heard if ethics charges have actually been filed with the Accountability Board? It has been oddly quiet since this happened.

We can only be thankfull he didn't really turn the hoses on the protesters. I still cannot believe that American's are not more outraged about this type of behavior and have allowed the idea that a Govener was duped. If MY govener was taken in by a call like that and revealed a systematic strategy to bust a Union as a citizen I would be outraged and demand he resign.

What I am wondering is how long it is going to take before the Unions who are actively stripped of bargaining rights will file a suit against the parties involved. Aren't they being robbed of due process?

For an elected Governor to even entertain a discussion about willfully formenting violence among peaceful protestors is a clear violation of his oath of office and a breach of the public trust. The people of Wisconsin have the right to demand answers as to what state officials took part in these discussions, all parties that were privy to these discussions, what measures were considered, what measures were implemented and what measures were rejected. The revelation of these considerations calls for much more than an ethics probe. A complete investigation by the state of Wisconsin's policing units the FBI and the DOJ are in order. These considerations border on or might reach the level of criminal conspiracy and those involved could be prosecuted under the RICO act.

Can anyone tell me if this telephone call is getting a lot of play in Wisconsin or is it being ignored by all the media outlets ?

It is getting play, it was the lead story on all the news last night and it was not pretty. I live in Milwaukee, so it would be a different local broadcast than Madison. All referred to the transcripts and tapes that could be seen online.

I got an email over the weekend from a friend who said that Tea Party protesters actually did try to create confrontations that might lead to arrests to make the union protesters look bad.

From what I saw last weekend, none of the the party protesters (or anti-Walker demonstrators) were doing anything to incite violence from the other side. There was obviously a fair deal of yelling and arguing but for the most part, given the circumstances, it seemed pretty civil.

Obviously you've applied your own interpretation of what you think he meant by "troublemakers" Mr. Vines. How do you know he didn't mean sending in troublemakers who would try to drown each other out by "yelling and arguing?"

The only one who suggested anything violent was the prankster attempting to bait Walker.

I did see a tea party tape that was obviously set up to look like a confrontation with an anti-Walker protester. They were very careful to only show the guys face with little or no background and no one else in view. I question it even being filmed in Wisconsin.

Our country is being slowly poisoned by this right-wing agenda, to erase the middle class leaving only two classes, the very rich and the very poor, The attack on the union in Wisconsin is another way to gain more political power, by disbanding unions you take away the support for the democrats, who are usually backed by unions, If the unions start to break up? we are in big trouble, The tea-party will get what they want, {one-party rule] backed up by goons with baseball bats!
02:09 PM on 02/24/2011
"because we thought about that"--who is the "we" governor? Your advisors-- or your fellow republicans in the Senate,or your State Party or the National Party leaders. Who were you discussing this with--and what kind of "troublemakers" were you going to plant?
01:55 PM on 02/24/2011
Walker is lucky the caller didn't mention deals with Koch, reminding him that he won't regret selling the state's utility companies to Koch without bidding... I hope we will hear more about this.

The Democrats seem to feel the the ends justify the means.
So its ok for teachers to not be in school and get phony doctors notes while the rest of us must show up and work.
Its ok for lawmakers to not show up in the senate and stop government business because they don't like the bill.
Its ok to make prank phone calls to try and make the govenor look bad even if the call is being made by a looney leftist that has written comments suggesting our troops that are killed asked for it and we should not shed a tear.
The left has lost middle American opinion with this whole union debacle.
Only here at HufPost does it seem like the govenor is in a minority.
The Dem senators will have to return to work and the bill will be passed.
They look and act like spolied children in the meantime.

Impeachment won't happen with a republican legislature. You have to RECALL him. If you want to get rid of him, start a petition. Get all the protesters to sign it. That right there should be enough signatures to get a recall on the ballot. Use this moment. Get rid of walker.
02:29 PM on 02/24/2011
I think they have to be in office a year for a recall.

That is correct, but there are 8 Republican state senators who are eligible for recall right now. Unfortunately, from what I've been hearing from people inside the Capitol, it's taking a very long time to get us organized and we have no clear leadership.

People showed up at rallied where the president was speaking openly carrying guns and assault weapons. And the attitude then was "so what?" Conservatives have so turned our nation into a Stalinist state where only the ideologically pure should be heard that I'm surprised there are still people willing to volunteer to serve anymore.
