McCain on Biden: Should have, didn't

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

If McCain hadn't become Karl Rove's sockpuppet, this is what he might have said in response to the selection of Joe Biden as OBama's running mate:

I congratulate my friend and colleague Joe Biden on his being selected as a vice presidential candidate. Joe and I have disagreed frequently over the years, and we disagree now on many of the important issues facing this country. But I've also worked with him, count him as a friend, and respect him as a capable man who loves the country he's served for so many years.

That said, I remain convinced that the solutions Joe and his running mate are proposing are dangerous, and dangerously out of step with the American people. We're going to keep on making that case up and down this great land, offering our own practical, down-to-earth solutions that will make a real difference in the lives of hard-working Americans.

McCain's actual response, in full, from his Web site:

ARLINGTON, VA -- Today, McCain spokesman Ben Porritt issued the following statement on Barack Obama's selection of Joe Biden as his running mate:

"There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden. Biden has denounced Barack Obama's poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realizing -- that Barack Obama is not ready to be President."

Classy.

This reminds me of the song lyrics "did you say I have alot to learn, well don't think I'm trying not to learn. Since this is the perfect spot to learn, Teach me Tonight"! Barack is phenomenal and understands that the elders have much wisdom to share and that those same elders can also learn new things from the grasshoppers.

They are both wise, energetic, thoughtful, unifiying and charismatic. Most of all they learn from past mistakes and aren't afraid to admit they made them.

My spirits are so high right now and I feel the rest of the countries (except the bitter rethugs) are too!

The constructive irony of choosing one of his strongest critics as his *running* *mate* appears to be lost on the McCain campaign - Obama is showing he is not afraid of criticism and is willing to work with those who question(ed) him. I see this as a strength and indicative of someone who is mindful of what a leader most needs to do: LISTEN. I say this despite McCain's "listening" being what has moved him over into being just a dime-a-dozen typical Republican politician instead of "The Maverick" he once purported to be. Obama has shown wisdom in this choice, despite how puzzling it may also be on several fronts.

The media want to make this a horse race but by the time the debates are over the Obama margin over McCain will be a chasm.
