On Saturday night, I had the great pleasure of working as a writer on Spike TV's "Guys Choice 2010," a wildly ballsy and superstar-studded affair that featured the likes of George Clooney, Robert DeNiro, Robert Downey, Jr. Leonardo Dicaprio, Charlize Theron, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, to name just a very few of the shiny A-listers. Yet the talk of the night was undoubtedly the return to public life by Sandra Bullock. In what was a truly stunning surprise even to many on the show, a radiant Bullock came by to accept the Troops Choice Awards for Entertainer Of The Year, part of Spike's larger initiative to support America's troops that's called Spike Salutes.
In the context of an extremely entertaining and colorful show that was full of memorable moments and freewheeling use of the English language, Bullock brought that same touch of class and sophisticated yet homespun beauty that has made her such an enduring and beloved superstar and woman. In a year when so much news has been made all around her, Bullock returned to the public stage with great style and real heart in a moment that was ultimately not about her.
